QuoteSudden cut in pollution in 2020 meant less shade from sun and was 'substantial' factor in record surface temperatures in 2023, study finds

The slashing of pollution from shipping in 2020 led to a big "termination shock" that is estimated have pushed the rate of global heating to double the long-term average, according to research.

Until 2020, global shipping used dirty, high-sulphur fuels that produced air pollution. The pollution particles blocked sunlight and helped form more clouds, thereby curbing global heating. But new regulations at the start of 2020 slashed the sulphur content of fuels by more than 80%

Quick, more pollution. It's the only way to save us from all the pollution.

It just shows that in the future we are going to need pretty sophisticated geo-engineering to keep things together.

Simpsons did it. Block the Sun. 90s tv has all the answers.

Covid likely had more impact on marine sulfur emissions in 2020 than the new regs, but whatever the cause we should always be on the lookout for unintended consequences.

Go the natural route...set off a couple volcanos.

Same as post WWII phenomenon, IIRC.

There was a pause from the mid 1930s through the early 1950s IIRC due to fuel emissions that rejected pollutant in the atmosphere, then it started climbing back.

Would have to read it again to be sure.

Germany has achieved about 65% renewable electricity generation in the first half of 2024. That is up from 50% in 2023.

Solar capacity is added above plan. Wind is a bit behind, but still several GW added. Also big projects for batteries and other storage methods going live to stabilize the net.

Coal is down to 20% when it was about 50% a decade ago. The official target for phasing out coal is 2038, but it will be priced out of the market before that.

Solar is really booming now. Along with batteries. Politically this is very nice for Texas because people seem to panic a bit less from solar farms than wind farms. Wind farms kill birds and give babies cancer and probably raise demons from the other side of the veil.

I tell you in a few decades we are going to be able to manage the climate via controlling the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. I wonder what the implications of that are going to be.
