It's not about altruism. It's about having a system that's fair.

Same way that I want everyone to have access to medical care, not having to rely on whether a doctor happens to be nearby and feeling like helping you out out of altruism.

Can't help but notice that people make that argument when they're talking about themselves but never when they're talking about billionaires. That's effectively exactly would buffet says, but you all think he's evil.

But he's taking advantage of the system as is . He acknowledges the issue (willing to approve higher min wage) but his reply is "nah not my problem". It'd be different if he never took delivery, but he does. It's like the billionaire thing. It's not a difference in kind, but of scale.

I understand min wage stuff is different in Europe so I don't know about the wait staff are so can't form an opinion, but Uber definitely underpays.

1. I don't understand the point you're making.

2. If you're including me in "you all", please don't. I haven't made any statements on the topic - other than one clarifying what someone else said as there seemed to be a misunderstanding going on - and in fact haven't made up my mind on the topic.

Not into subsidising those who want to pay shit wages.

Please tell me how your logic differs from Buffet's argument.

None of us, especially if you are not American, should be using Uber or Lyft or any other app based delivery services.

Their use harms your local companies and collaterally rob you of economic sovereignty.

Then why use an unfair system and benefit from it? "Those guys are bad for not paying wages, but yay me for exploiting it"?

I use Uber because taxis have screwed me one too many times. But it's usually longer trips and I tip so I feel slightly better about it :D

Quote from: HVC on September 19, 2023, 03:34:25 PM15% is the low end for delivery in NA. The markup doesn't go to the driver, it's the restaurant doing it to cover Ubers take. If you get delivery (from anywhere) tip the driver. They make shit. Don't want to tip go pick up. That's where having a car comes in handy :P

What bugs me is when I go to pick up some food, they hand me the Interac terminal, and it defaults to "how much of a tip do you want to pay".  Exactly what is the service I'm tipping for in this situation?

Most of the places I got the cashier actually zeros it out before handing it over. I'm assuming it's just the default for those machines.

I don't understand the point you're making in the first sentence: "Can't help but notice that people make that argument when they're talking about themselves but never when they're talking about billionaires. " How does "we shouldn't rely on individual charity, we should have a well functioning publicly funded system" relate to the juxtaposition of billionaires and "yourself"?

I object to being included in the second sentence: "That's effectively exactly would buffet says, but you all think he's evil." I have made no statements on Buffet's alignment.

Buffet makes exactly the same argument - he expressly says the system needs to be dramatically reformed so that wealthy people pay more in tax.  He says that the current system is both unfair and reduces the available resources to fund public works.

But people feel great about saying he is a bad person because he does not voluntarily give.  Garbon says there is a magnitude of difference to hide the hypocrisy of the position taken by those who say they also don't give because they think the system should be reformed rather than depending on charity.

Even more fundamentally the argument that Billionaires are by definition bad people, is it takes the focus off the one thing that does need to change, as identified by both Billionaires and their critics - the current system.

Does your pronouncement include Canadian company Skip the Dishes (headquartered in Winnipeg)?  It seems to be the dominant food delivery service in Edmonton at least.
