Quote from: Admiral Yi on November 04, 2022, 11:40:26 PMIf anyone has the Netflix ad supported tier I'd be interested to know that the ad load is.

Is this a new thing or America only?

As I've not seen that option on netflix here, though I've not logged into my basic account in several months.

It is a fairly recent rollout after they had it under trial in other markets.

Netflix dubs french in France, dubs english in Montreal.

QuoteNowadays it has become a bit of a volume business, since streaming platforms have to dub so much stuff every month, and the quality has significantly declined. It's still not as bad as those out of sync dubs people make fun of though.

See above. Comparable as before, only worse than before. I keep hearing the same complaints by voxolâtres over here.
Mind you, I understand the nostalgia factor to some degree, but revisiting classic old dubs, even for cartoons/anime, is generally disappointing.

Do they use voxophiles/voxolâtres in Québec Viper?

They used to use voxophiles yes.  Less so nowadays because many dubs are made overseas with inferior quality (read: rushed) and often tend to use the Parisian argot instead of international French. :(

They also tend to use different actors from movie to movie instead of keeping the same people.  Once upon a time, guys like Tom Cruise would pick their own dubbers.

Memoirs of a Geisha. Girl is sold into the hidden world of the geisha. It's fine. I seem to recall some controversy surrounding the casting of Chinese actresses, but I had no problem with them.

Quote from: Duque de Bragança on November 05, 2022, 11:12:11 AMIt's offered here as well. No personal idea about the load, it says 15-30 ads at the beginning and in the middle of show. 5-6 minutes per hour.

Thanks.  Not worth the five bucks I would save.

On a related note youtube has been going nuts with the ads  Really packing them in.

I wonder how ad supported Netflix does vs ad blockers.

As to English dubs I find them almost universally horrific. They're inevitably done by Americans, and for some reason dub actors always seem to have very strong accents. This makes for a weird dissonance between an obviously Japanese setting and characters but everyone being American.
Exceptions of course for when the film/show  was meant to have an American feel to begin with despite originally being in another language - cowboy bebop is the famous one.
So yes. My jealously is large for the Latinos and their different dub for each side of the Atlantic.

I don't think I've seen an online ad in years, including on youtube. I use these browser extensions:

I just found out that Jermaine Clement is writting a miniseries based on the Gilliam movie Time Bandits.

I need that in my life right now.

Khartoum. The movie had a lot more blackface than I remembered.

Quote from: Iormlund on November 05, 2022, 12:13:54 PMI haven't been able to watch anything dubbed for the past 20 years for more than 10 seconds, but I gotta side with Celed here. Its not just nostalgia.
Oh yes, it is. Back then getting original versions was way harder, not just in Spain, and missing childhood or youth, llack of references clouds memories.
Not to mention the technical aspect, sound mixing, dubbed voices crushing the ambient sounds and music, mono instead of stereo, can in no way be better.
You don't need a fancy home cinema to feel it.

QuoteSome stuff back then was very well done (eg. The Simpsons). Not just because quite a few dubbing actors were actually good, but because there was time and thought put into things like adapting jokes and references.
Animation can be done properly, yes unlike direct sound movies. That may the one case where they dubbed better than now. Still, even the English "original"
version is a dub.
Yet, I can only laugh at the Galician dub of Dragonball with the guy obviously singing out of key about O Dragom.

QuoteIn a handful of cases, it was better than the original track. The classic example is The adventures of Ford Fairlane, due to the unusual circumstances of its dub (and how shitty the original was). There was a strike going on and the producers had to get creative. The result was an absurdly over the top protagonist. It still flopped, but became a cult classic.

The original Ford Fairlande is pretty wild and left plenty of leeway, and yes other adaptations was pretty wild. Not the example I would choose see below.
Still, I would only leave dubs to so bad it's good territory such as Chuck Norris movies where they completely change the lines, not just in French, seen in German as well, with a Sie courtesy form completely out of place.
Post-sync movies as well, specially if you get Sergio Leone's to check the language (so basically Italian and French he had some knowledge). Yes, despite having anglophone actors for the stars, the supporting cast is way below.
Obviously not all cf. Fellini's, even if it's obviously Italian looped in.

QuoteWhile we're on the topic, I fucking hate that Amazon Prime Spain lists some movies with just the Spanish dub track. Drives me nuts.

I believe it happens for francophones over here as well, if it's of any consolation.
Some of their dubs are infamous for Francophones.  :D
Not even Viper will ever want to watch the original Dumbells "French" dub, very hard to find legally, though some highlights may be found on Youtube.

Changing voices is a plague, the worst cases Patrick Steward (8 voices 3/4 for Trek) or even William Shatner.

I mean voxophiles or voxolâtres as dubbing fans/maniacs  :P Not (just) unemployed theatre actors or dub-only voice "talent".

As for Parisian argot (titi parisien) , I would be surprised to hear that, since it's mostly dead over here.
Banlieue argot is used by Besson and the like.
Unless you mean colloquial speech.

The one I can recommend for even older Parisian argot (argot des fortif')

Only the German (!) blu-ray has the hilariously anachronical French argot dub, for some reason.

There are always subtitles. ;) Stallone's usual French voice (Dorval) is unbearable for me.
Commando, at least the VF did not ruin the movie. Let's say the movie was well-suited for a dub, unlike Casablanca and its different dubs (the '80s one is a disaster)  :P
