Title: Horrors of the upcoming Christmas season
Post by: Ed Anger on August 26, 2012, 03:12:23 PM
With the frequency of toy commercials increasing, time to post the worst ones from American television.

August '12:

Doggie Doo.

A dog that craps.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDyOD1C67J0

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.8bitdad.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2011%2F11%2Fdoggie-doo.jpg&hash=25280ebd3b30b140c3639f8a5ab3ee88e864a5eb)

I know if I was a kid, I'd want a toy dog that shits under the tree.

More coming as the season grinds into a commercial orgy of excess!

I can see how it would be useful in educating kids about poop scooping family pets, but the replay value does seem minimal.

Amazon reviews seem to indicate that this dog frequently suffers from constipation.  I bet the next product to come out is laxative for that dog.  That damn razor and blades model.

The whole family is going to NYC for Thanksgiving week, to take the nieces to watch the big tree get lit up and watch the parade.

I will be staying home, staring at my thawed turkey loaf, and being pissy.

After Sandy the tree lighting will be done by crazed urbanites burning wood for heat. Don't worry, you are missing nothing.

Not in the mood for any bullshit holiday fucking cheer this year.

Already told everybody it's gonna be an arts and crafts Christmas, so fucked up knitted pot holders for everyone, and the girls get ceramic ashtrays shaped like sombreros.  Fuck it.

Besides, I would miss my cat.

The furby is back...

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323713104578137213975675602.html

QuoteAlready, Hasbro Inc.'s  refreshed and tech-focused Furby, a doll many observers say has the best chance to be a breakout star this year, is selling out on several retail websites. Online, Wal-Mart has almost completely run out of stock, and several colors can't be purchased on Target's website. Toys "R" Us and Amazon.com Inc.  appear better stocked for now, though more-popular colors on Amazon are selling above the list price.

Riley loved building blocks at that age. Things she could stack and knock over. Also, undestructible books - think cloth books, crinkle books, plastic-covered books, etc.

I don't remember how the topic came up, but on Thanksgiving my kids (18 and 16.5) were talking about the horrors of the Furbys they used to have when they were small.  I had no idea but apparently they hid them in their closets and the Furby in the Closet was a running joke/horror story between themselves for quite a while.

Building blocks for a girl?  What, do you want them growing up to have a non-traditional career goal?

Barbies and make make-up kits instead.

Okay, books are on the list now.  She doesn't seem to like building blocks, at least not those jumbo-sized things that Tommy doesn't play with any more except for "making guns".  She's not really into dolls yet but she does like stuffed animals.

We have duplo blocks and she hasn't shown much interest in them.

On the other hand, maybe I'll buy her this to spite the feminazis who were complaining about it a few months ago:

Why on earth would anyone complain about those? It looks like fun.

I had a Furby once.  Hollowed it out and turned it into a covert enclosure with a 3.7mm camera with sound.
why would you modify a child's toy to record video... Oh my :o

Because the box is pink and the "Lego for Girls" playset themes reinforce patriarchal notions of what little girls like.  And it somehow sexualizes little girls

Yeah, plus a bunch of Chinese knock-offs.  IIRC the standard Lincoln Logs are now plastic   You gotta spring for a premium set to, erm, get wood.

I usually try to wait til a few days into December but since I had an empty house and plenty of time I put up the tree Saturday.  Looked depressing without lights so I put lights on it as well.  We've traditionally used those large round incandescent bulbs, but each year about a third of them seem to go bad.  I had just enough to cover the tree this year.  Will wait for the kids to be here before I put any ornaments on.  And I already have some stuff wrapped & under the tree.

I can get so much shit done without kids around.

I think that is the "Classic" line.  At least thru last year they had a cheaper standard version that was all plastic.

I remember buying Hungry Hungry Hippos for Tommy a couple years ago.  I was happy I could get it for like $8 or whatever, but the thing fell apart after a couple weeks.  The game I had as a kid lasted through many years of abuse.

:hmm:  I think toys that give you wood are more appropriate for older children.

Heah, I remember the consistently popular early toy was a building set made up of heavy stone-like building blocks and thick rubber squares/rectangles that were used for levels.

And when we got older they could be flung with some force.

You gotta be shitting me.  Well I don't know, my set of Lincoln logs looked like the were made in the 1960's.  I had a bunch of old toys.

Show her the cartoon. She'll be hooked. Try to avert you gaze like I do to avoid the brony rays.

The cartoon is not too bad at least.  Thomas the Tank Engine on the other hand :bleeding:

Though now David has moved onto this weird Canadian spelling show, Super Why.  I guess an Australian show is next.

Pray it is not The Wiggles.

Speaking of horrors, the twins dislike Frosty the Snowman. They did not care for that show.

Thank god, I can't stand it either.

Tommy's not a fan.  I liked it when I was a kid, but then again when you were a kid in the 70s & 80s you were desperate for any morsel they threw you in terms of Christmas specials.  I don't think it has aged very well.

The Rankin-Bass stop-motion animation specials are timeless, of course.

I've managed to come this far without hearing even one Christmas song yet.  :showoff: Maintaining complete radio and tv silence did it.
