Inspired by a picture of a kid without a helmet in another thread--which looks a bit odd now. But there was one kid on my block growing up that wore a helmet, and he caught some beatings and grief for it. His parents probably didn't realize that helmet put him more at risk of a head injury.

Darn it.  Hit the wrong thing and voted "35 or older--yes" by mistake.  Should be "35 or older--no".  Heck, modern-type bike helmets weren't even commercially available AFAIK when I was a little kid.

I reset the poll to allow voters to change their vote.  Because I want a straight "35 or older--no" run on the table.  :P

Nowadays only white people wear helmets(or the spandex)...or ride bikes where their knees don't go higher than their butts for that matter.

The vast majority of Korean kids do not.

And no, no bicycle helmets.

I of course voted 35+ and no.

But times change.  My kid is 2.  He wears a bike helmet when he pushes (not pedals :() his tricycle around.  Once he starts on a two-wheeler, I want to get one again - and I'll wear a bike helmet too.

Helmets were mandatory on school trips, so we had one in the family that was used for just that. Otherwise I never wore helmet, rarely used helmet on the moped either.

46 and no.  Like Seedy, we rode our bikes all over, did jumps, and even had "bike fights" with them.

Today, I ride my normal route along a county highway, with rednecks in pickups racing by me.  My bike helmet keeps the beer cans from causing a concussion.

39 and a big fucking NO.

I ran my bike everywhere, city and country roads. My kids wear it when cycling in town, they don't use it offroad .

On a somewhat related note, though, last year I bought an helmet for skiing. Too many idiots recklessly speeding on ski slopes.

35 or older - no

I was run over by a car on the way to school (10th grade) and all I had was road rash.
it gets better: I had a test that day so I asked the lady that almost killed me to take my bike back home and drive me to school. Turs out she lived close and her daughter went to school close to mine, she gave me a ride to school for almost the whole school year until I fixed my bike.

Because bicycles are unnecessary? Here in the city they are pretty dangerous. If I want to get somewhere slowly I can walk and if I want to get somewhere quickly, I can drive my car.  Cars are also preferable for when I want run someone over.

We lived in a pretty hilly area.  There was one really steep street, the top was a dead end and at the bottom was a t intersection with another residential street.  We would go to the top of that street on our Big Wheels and come screaming down the hill, with feet up, and shoot across the other street, with no flaggers or spotters, hit the curb and fly into my next door neighbors yard.  It was fun for a few weeks until a stupid adult saw what we were doing and had a conniption fit and told our parents.

We we were kids we decided to become parachutists. We practiced our skills for a few days by jumping from very low tree limbs with grocery bags held over our heads. No one was injured, so obviously our skills were sound.

We then decided to go to the next level. We made a parachute with a bookbag and a sheet tied inside. The concept was to jump from a tall tree (probably about 25 ft), unzip the bookbag, and then parachute safely to the ground. One of my friends was climbing the tree for the moment of glory, when his idiot father looked out the window and shut it down while freaking out, obviously not appreciating our da vinci like genius and design.

The poll isn't what I expected--we are older than I thought, and I figured most young people use helmets.

Actually, come to think, the only serious accident I ever had on a bicycle as a kid on my BMX would have been better with heavy duty boots.  It had those serrated-kind of pedals (probably for better grip), and once going down a hill, I took my feet off...the pedals kept spinning, and when I stupidly try to put my feet back on, and it tore a good chunk out of my left ankle.  The doctor said it was a good thing I was a fat kid, as that was about all it tore out.  :D

No, nobody wears a helmet here. Bicycles have de facto right of way over everything (pedestrians, cars, zebra crossings, traffic lights).
Besides, unless you're old it's pretty hard to hurt yourself at such slow speeds.

I do wear a helmet every time I'm on the racing bike, and I won't ride with anyone who doesn't.

Bicycles are for pussies.
Real kids walk around in combat boots, heavy backpacks, and old oversized camouflage uniforms.

Under 35 and yes and no.  I didn't when I was just cycling with friends or just in my area.  If I was going on a long cycle into Forestry Commission land or whatever then yeah.

So real kids take 2-3 times as long to go places?  :hmm:

I haven't seen My Counsin Vinny in months.  Time to go check TNT or TBS.

The poll isn't what I expected--we are older than I thought, and I figured most young people use helmets.

Oh, I knew a lot of us are over 35, but I also expected that most young people use helmets.
It seems to me that most Languishites would have been driving by the time the helmet craze hit in the 2000s.

Yeah, that's the one. Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei. Fred Gwynne (aka Herman Munster) as the judge.
