Not me. I never thought I'd be happy about being the Pats zone too.
Bears - Packers are on at 3:15pm local time, Hawks - Red Wings exhibition on at 4pm, which is right about the time I'll need to switch channels anyways to avoid throwing a half-full PBR can through the TV screen in Anger & Frustration...
:P

It'll be an interesting first half at least. If they can get out of that first half without having a total beatdown put on them, I'll be willing to admit that the Bills are for real. I so want the Bills to be for real. I want them to rip the Patriots to shreds. But KC seems like they're back to their old tricks, and a win over the Raiders doesn't mean you're ready to be awesome.
The Bills winning the AFC East would make my year almost as much as a Ravens Superbowl would.

The Pats defense is full of holes & sucks. If the Bills D can somehow keep Brady from throwing like he did in the previous week, they have a chance.

Well, they gave up 35 to Oakland, so let's not go crazy here. We'll see what happens.
As long as Ryan Fitzpatrick and Fred Jackson have monster games, I'll be happy if the score is 60-59 Pats.
QuoteFormer Raven Orlando Brown found dead in Baltimore
By Jeff Zrebiec, The Baltimore Sun
7:54 PM EDT, September 23, 2011
The "Welcome to the NFL" moment for many of the Ravens' young defenders over the years didn't come when they first walked into the team's locker room, or donned the purple-and-black jersey. It came during practice, when they found themselves lined up across from Orlando "Zeus" Brown.
"My first image of the NFL was when I first saw Zeus. I thought, 'They're sure a lot bigger here,'" Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson said. "He had that dark visor on his helmet, wearing those throwback jerseys under his pads. He was intimidating and dared you to back down from him. If you did, you were done. He embodied what the NFL, what the Ravens, are all about. His willingness to battle along with you, the way he stood up for his teammates, was special."
Brown, the giant offensive tackle known for his mean streak on the field and his loyalty and gentleness off of it, was found dead Friday at his South Baltimore apartment. He was 40 years old and is survived by three sons between the ages of 9 and 15, according to the Ravens. According to court documents, he also had a younger daughter, and he was fighting for custody of her.
The cause of death hasn't been determined, and an autopsy is pending. City police and fire officials confirmed that they were at the former player's apartment at the HarborView complex in South Baltimore and there were no signs of foul play or suspicious activity, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.
Fire Department spokesman Kevin Cartwright said medics were called after the player was found unresponsive in his home in the 1200 block of Harbor Island Walk. Medics called police to the scene at about 11 a.m. as a matter of protocol, and police say there were no signs of foul play or any initial indications as to the cause of death. The state medical examiner will perform an autopsy.
Official said "preliminary reports did not suggest a crime scene," though four hours later the street near the home was inaccessible and blocked off by crime scene tape.
Brown, whose size (6 feet 7, 370 pounds) and fiery temperament earned him the nicknamed "Zeus," played for the Ravens from 1996 to 1998 and from 2003 to 2005. He started 80 games for them over parts of six seasons.
"He was one of the great men I know, really a gentle giant away from the game," inside linebacker Ray Lewis said. "He was the original Raven. He set the tone for how we were going to play tough and physical, backing down from no opponent. When you heard his voice on the field, you knew things were going to be all right."
Brown, a Washington native, was an undrafted rookie who began his career with the Browns in 1993 and became a Raven in 1996.
"There was no better friend, no one more loyal than Zeus was to his teammates and those in the Ravens," general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "If he felt that you respected him, that you were willing to teach him or show him care, you had a loyal friend for eternity. Loyalty is one of the first words I think when Zeus pops in my mind."
Outside of Baltimore, Brown was perhaps best known for an on-field incident in 1999, when, while with the Browns, he shoved referee Jeff Triplette to the ground. Triplette had hit Brown in the eye with a weighted penalty flag. Brown, whose eye was damaged, was suspended by the NFL.
A year later, he filed a $200 million lawsuit against the NFL, claiming the incident ended his career. He and the league settled for a reported $25 million, and Brown signed with the Ravens in 2003.
Ravens safety Ed Reed said Brown's energy was part of what got the team going in practice every day. Linebacker Terrell Suggs credited with Brown with accelerating his maturation as a player.
"His first season back in Baltimore was my rookie year. He definitely showed me several 'Welcome to the NFL' moments," Suggs said. "He never went easy on me, and he made me work hard to become better every day. ... The man you saw on the field wasn't the person who he was off of it. He was definitely a gentle giant who always had a smile on his face. I'm not really sure what to say right now."
After his retirement, Brown went into the restaurant business and opened his first Fatburger franchise in Elkridge in January 2009. Later that year, Brown was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary and destruction of property after he was accused of breaking into his ex-wife's Cockeysville home, but charges were dropped early last year.
Brown had remained active with the Ravens, working with second-year offensive tackle Ramon Harewood to help him develop into an NFL-ready tackle.
"To have a player and man of his stature do that for a young player like myself says all you need to know about him," Harewood said. "He was always upbeat, always encouraging and would never let me get down on myself. We had similar backgrounds, with me only playing football for four years and him having to work his way into the NFL the hard way. He was an inspiration both as a player and as a human being. I will miss him, and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family."
Oh, god damn it.
:bleeding: Dammit, Texans, stop trying to give the game away.
Patriots vs. Bills, if I remember correctly.

Welp, the Texans are going to lose. FGs instead of TDs in the redzone killed them (three that I can think of off the top of my head came from inside the 10).

Yeah, that loss hurts. I really enjoyed the game, since I like both teams, but they just couldn't execute in the red zone.

The distinct lack of running plays in the redzone, especially when they were inside the 10, was irritating me. Schaub can throw a nice football and all, but with a guy like Ben Tate back there, why not give it to him?

Especially since the Texans runblock so well. It's weird, because it's not like their running game was erased throughout the game. They did alright, but they went a little pass-wacky in the red zone.

QuoteEagles QB Vick vents about lack of calls after breaking hand
Michael Vick keeps taking a beating, and he's not happy about it.
The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback suffered a broken right hand during Sunday's 29-16 loss to the New York Giants and afterward vented about what he believes is unfair treatment by game officials.
"That's pretty much been the story for the last three weeks," said a clearly perturbed Vick, who had his non-throwing hand heavily wrapped. "At some point, something catastrophic is going to happen, and I broke my hand."
Vick was injured during the third quarter when he was hit by Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty following a 23-yard pass to Jeremy Maclin.
"I felt I got hit late. No flag," Vick said, according to The Associated Press.
Eagles coach Andy Reid said Vick would have a CT scan Monday, but the quarterback doesn't know if he'll be able to play next week against the San Francisco 49ers.
What Vick does know is that he doesn't receives the same treatment as other NFL quarterbacks.
"I think more precautions should be taken when I'm inside the pocket," Vick said. "You look at all the replays, I'm on the ground every time. It's unfortunate for myself, it's unfortunate for my team, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't frustrated right now because of that."
Vick said he's doing all he can to stay on the field and wondered if he needs to do something else to achieve that goal.
"I am conscious of my safety, and I want to play this game and protect myself at all times even though sometimes I can't," he said. "I trust in my offensive lineman ... I guess I got to do more. There's something I'm not doing right maybe. I just got to keep pressing."
Vick said he wasn't complaining about not getting calls Sunday, but rather commenting on a season-long trend that is unfair to him.
"I don't know why I don't get the 15-yard flags like everybody else do," he said. "Hey, I'm not going to complain about it. I'm just going to make everyone aware of it."
Nigga, the refs aren't protecting you? The whole fucking NFL has protected you.
He's a quarterback. That means that any complaining he does about calls or non-calls is automatically invalid.

Andy Dalton came back down to earth after a good pre-season/1.5 regular season games. He started out okay but really seemed to get rattled after a while. Bengals will win no more games this season if they don't figure out how to convert on 3rd down. 2 for 21 in their last two games. Ugh.

Yeah, a safety was scored, and that's usually the sign of a defensive struggle. The Bengals are going to have to lean mightily on their defence, because Dalton isn't going to produce shit, especially with their best receivers out or nicked up. As for the 49ers, they remind me of the Boller-era Ravens, only Alex Smith doesn't have anywhere near the talent or ability to execute that Boller has, and the defence isn't quite up to that level. Still, the 49ers could actually make the playoffs, since Seattle, St. Louis and Arizona are also bad.

On the other hand, Hasselbeck became worthless once Walter Jones retired, so I think that the Warner retirement was the moment that good QB play ended in the division.
Ugh. Cowboys-Redskins. I might as well go to bed.
I guarantee you that the Cowboys are wishing that they had held onto Gurode.
This is a bad football game.
Hey look. Rex with the turnover to end it. I'm shocked.
God that was fucking painful. I watched that godawful shit game just to see the Skins blow it yet again?
Fucking Snyder.
Following my return from the OH-IO! jaunt I took, these are my initial thoughts on the week without seeing many highlights: The Browns looked like shit and tried to lose to no avail. I'll take the W though. Awesome seeing the Bills beat the Pats. I live in Bills country, and it's a happy land for once. Also, having Gronkowski and Welker on my team as I curbstomped Timmah with their points was delicious. Steelers fail at life as to their personal refs and Fraudell. Now to hit some highlight reels and catch up.

Dolphins FIAL > Browns FIAL :(
However, like the diligent fans of so many other troubled teams, I'm not giving up.
The Rex Cannon blows up, as usual. It's an alternate week thing, I think.
The Danny hates to lose to the Cowboys. The Danny hates to lose to the Cowboys on just field goals. The Danny will not be pleasant to be around this week.

Yeah losing a game when that is all they have done for the past 18 years or so really stings.
Dear ESPN, The Cowgirls & the Blueskins might have a a great & fun rivalry once upon a time but it isn't the case anymore. No more of this crap on Monday nite, alright?

Yeah, but it was supposed to be different. The Redskins were playing fairly well, and had a tough defence, whereas the Cowboys had no offensive line worth of the name, no wide receivers that belong in the NFL, no running game and a gimpy QB. Even if you expected the Sex Cannon to ruin the game, you still have to be a little disappointed.

Monday Night Football has really suffered since the big game moved to Sunday night.

The nation still loves the Cowgirls and considers them 'America's Team'. Because it seems America loves really shitty football teams.

They prefer to put bandwagon teams on there, to be sure, but that's also a product of having to schedule in advance. When they scheduled it at the beginning of the year, they thought that Colts and Steelers would be a competitive game with two elite teams. And then Manning was out for the year and the Steelers were revealed to be shitty.

I was just going to say this. The Sunday nighter is good because NBC can pick a couple weeks in advance who they want to play at night, so its usually an interesting game. But MNF, by scheduling a year in advance, has to guess at what might be interesting, and they frequently get it wrong.
I'm glad I went to bed early.

There wasn't anything all that impressive. Him and Grossman had pretty much identical stat lines. I guess he must have been a little bit good, since every other player on the offensive side of the Cowboys is a total scrub.

Yeah, a safety was scored, and that's usually the sign of a defensive struggle.
To be fair, the 49ers punter ran out of the endzone intentionally to run time off the clock. Doing so left just 2 seconds for the ensuing free kick-- i.e., no chance of an offensive play for the Bengals. I never liked that tactic but it was a smart move to put the final nail in the coffin in this case.
QuoteThe Bengals are going to have to lean mightily on their defence, because Dalton isn't going to produce shit, especially with their best receivers out or nicked up.
If Dalton comes out shaky Sunday & throws more INTs, they really need to think about putting Gradkowski in. The Bills defense can be scored on-- unless you're the Chiefs.
QuoteAs for the 49ers, they remind me of the Boller-era Ravens, only Alex Smith doesn't have anywhere near the talent or ability to execute that Boller has, and the defence isn't quite up to that level. Still, the 49ers could actually make the playoffs, since Seattle, St. Louis and Arizona are also bad.
They have a solid run defense & talented defensive backs. They'll win the division with their defense & it probably won't even be a close race.
QuoteOne wonders: Has there ever been another division as completely worthless as the NFC West has been since Kurt Warner left Arizona?
They managed to pull a stunt I never thought I'd see: a team with a losing record making the playoffs.

How to make averages look good. You've had 2 sub-par weeks of 80 points & 1 week of scoring 112 points but losing to Kenny Britt's career day.

It doesn't bother me so much, but maybe I'm more used to it since giving up a safety in exchange for field position in the kicking game is pretty common in the CFL.

 Poor Chiefs. And then they lose to the Chargers, of all teams. I wondered why they didn't put Grad in there from day one. I know Dalton is allegedly the Chosen One, but Gradkowski has a lot of experience doing something with not very much. Still, the Bengals D should be able to help out a bit, unlike the tissue paper D they have in New England. The Bengals have a chance, at least.

Yeah, and Willis is a beast. The only team in that division that might be able to do anything against them are the Cardinals, but I doubt them pretty hard. They're just missing too many of the players from that opportunistic defence that almost won the Superbowl, and the reason that Kolb was a backup for all those years is that he's inconsistent. How a team can look at him and see The Answer makes me scratch my head. The Rams and Seahawks might as well pack it in. I feel bad for these guys having to play the AFC North this year.

Yeah, they sure shut up all the people saying that they didn't belong there. And then they turn around and cut the best player on their team loose and replace him with a guy that's going to be out of the league in two or three years.
Hey, I have a rules question for Berkut, but anyone else can feel free to chime in.
There was a weird ending to Saturday's Blue Bomber game, and I'm curious how it'd be treated under American rules.
Game was tied in the final minute. The Argos are lined up for a game winning field goal. During the play someone in the crowd blows a whistle, and some members of the defending team are seen to hold up, but not the kicker. The ball hits the left upright and bounces out.
Refs order a re-kick.
On the re-kick, the ball sails wide right, however the Bombers are unable to run the ball out of the end zone and thus the Argoes score a single. And this is the first time I can recall seeing a game-winning single.
Now obviously the US game doesn't have the single point so I'm not so interested in that, but I'm wondering about ordering the re-kick due to the whistle in the stands. Do you think that was the proper thing to do?
I'm relatively certain they would have them re-kick in the NFL as well.
Who was the home team? Did the idiot with the whistle help or hurt his team?
Argos was the Home team.
It didn't help but I wouldn't say that it did either. Sure Kicker miss the first time but that could have ended on a Rouge too.
At the risk of shitting up the real football thread with more Canuckball, what is a single and what is a rouge?

No it wouldn't have - it hit the upright and bounced back into the field of play.
A single and a rouge are two names for the same thing. You get a single point for kicking a ball into or through the end zone, but not through the fieldgoal posts. It's generally pretty unimportant (who wants to end their drive and only get 1 point), but, as here, it does add some excitement occasionally on a missed feild goal.

My understanding is that it would likely be ruled an inadvertent whistle and the down would be re-played. Probably depends on whether the refs themselves heard the whistle.
I know for certain that NFL rules prohibit whistles & other artificial noisemakers in stadiums, so if that fan were found he'd be ejected (not a big deal at the end of the game I guess) & lose his season tickets if he were a season ticketholder.
