A couple months ago I purchased the initial parts to build a dual-ITX rackmount system. I'm (finally) about to purchase the last pieces I need to make the system operational.
My plan is to shift the web server over to a new system, an Atom D525-based system with an enterprise-class Western Digital RE4 drive. In the same case will the the current server board, reconfigured as a backup server with a pair of WD Green 2TB drives. Once up and running, I plan to co-locate this box at a local datacenter.
The result is that, over the next couple months, there will be intermittent outages while certain steps happen. At worst, none should last more than a day. Once complete, however, operation should be much smoother than before.
In case I get to a point where a down period looks to last a significant amount of time, I'm going to look into cloud services options that could run a server image for a few days.

Will there be any data loss involved?
Yes.

This evening, at about 1900 CST I'm going to take the forum offline for a bit to upgrade to SMF 2.0.2. I'm not sure how long it will take to perform the upgrade, but I'll have the forum in maintenance mode until I finish.

The mobile version hasn't changed. I am afraid to go to my pc and see the real site.
Is this languish? I don't know....I suspect the place has been hacked....hmm....
Yeah, the themes are annoying me. I just installed four new ones, but I'm not having much luck. I'm trying to find a 2.0-compatible version of the Blue theme, but so far no joy.
It's just so...big. And so...white.
It's like posting on www.newtshairdo.com :P
Well, this is going to take a minute getting used too.
Atleast the previous theme, core, is still there & looks the same.

Yeah, Core was 2.0-compliant. The rest I had installed technically were not, though they worked well enough with 2.0 beta 4.
whoa
I like it.
Welcome to the future.
I actually like the Fresh theme. It's clean, the content is aligned centrally on the page, and the darker blue doesn't hurt my eyes.
Yeah, I like Fresh, too. Possibly also because the color scheme reminds me of a certain long-gone member of the Tri-Fora.

I'm making it a point this week to get the Linode I ordered last night stood up. There may be some performance issues, and if they are too bad I'll upgrade to a larger one or go through with the colo plan. I want off this T1 connection ASAP so I can decommission it and switch my home connection to something cheaper. There will be a (hopefully) brief service interruption when I make the transfer. I will not be making any changes to the board and we will not lose any data.

Good idea, oh and can't you ban people who henceforth post too graphically intense content, I'm thinking specifically AuntieMay.

I have the Linode configured and ready for the transfer. I plan to make the transfer tomorrow morning.
The site will be down for about 30 minutes while I do the final database transfer. I'll change the DNS records before I start the transfer, so by the time I'm done some of you may already be able to access the new server. In the past, though, some DNS servers have taken days to get the updated records. For those who may have problems, the new server IP is 66.228.52.41; you can put that in your hosts file (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file) for languish.org if you don't want to wait for your DNS provider to catch up. Don't do it yet, though, or you won't be able to get here. :P

Switchover delayed by termites. Stay tuned for a reschedule; I'm currently leaning towards Sunday.
What's with about 8 guests all reading an NFL playoffs thread? Is there something interesting in it?
So, I'm finally ready to move things. I really need to stop procrastinating so much. :P
I'm going with the colocated server idea. My datacenter slot is ready and the new machine will be in it in a couple days. If everything goes as planned, I will switch over on Sunday evening.
The new box is racked and up at the DC, 10 days late. Tonight I will take the current site down, copy the database to the new box, and switch the DNS.
DNS information may take a few days to propagate. The new server's IP is 108.166.163.106. You may want to edit your hosts file to add a record for languish.org so you don't suffer an outage. The database transfer should only take half an hour.
Edit Windows hosts file (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-surprising-uses-for-the-windows-hosts-file/)
Edit Mac hosts file (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-edit-the-mac-os-x-hosts-file-and-why-you-might-want-to/)
I went to save the IP down and when I went to name the file languish, saw that I'd had the IP from the last time saved the same way. :D

That reminds me, everyone should check their hosts files anyway to make sure that there is not an entry for the current IP (66.253.55.117). If there is, you need to delete that or you will not be able to get to the site after the switch.
Somebody's not gonna get the memo.
So I'll be off languish for a few days. No biggie.
