Title: March Madness
Post by: Admiral Yi on March 13, 2011, 02:59:02 PM
Official seeds come out later today.

I've been listening a bit to Linardi on ESPN (97% accurate historically).  His 4 #1 seeds are Ohio St., Notre Dame, Pitt, and ... shit, I'm spacing on the 4th.  Probably Kansas.

He has Duke as a 2, and UConn as a two.  He had only gone through the East bracket when I stopped watching.

11 Big East teams in according to Linardi.

No Zona had tied it up on nice shot with 20secs left.

Thomas was amazing in tournament played like 123 of 125mins.
and was clutch
21pts-11 assists vs Wazzu
10pts-12 assists vs Ducks
28pts-7 assists vs Cats.

I think it's important to keep in mind when doing comparisons that the Big East is a huge conference.

That being said, it does seem that year after year after year the Big East gets about 7 of the spots in the top 10.  Not necessarily #1, but the bulk of the leader board after that.

That was one hell of a finish, both in regulation and in overtime.

I thought Arizona had it put away when Williams had that and 1 play with 30 seconds left.

Thomas was just not going to be denied. Congrats on the Pac-10 Tourney Championship. It's a small consolation for losing the conference, of course, but certainly better than nothing... :P

Now, could the Huskies arrange to win more than 1 game in the tournament for a change, please?

Oakland may surprise some people.  They play an insanely difficult non-conference schedule for a team at their level, which I think is preparing them to be one of the new Sweet 16 cinderellas sometime soon.

Btw is the Languish tourney pick'em league active yet?

So, what's the First Four in Dayton?

They have it set up so that the 16-seed teams that have to play-in play at 6:30pm tomorrow & Wednesday, and the more interesting games (Clemson-UAB Tues. & USC-VCU Wed.) for late evening .  Which is clever because they bundle both games each night together as a "session", meaning if you have an interest in the later game you gotta also go to (or at least pay for) the first game.

I'd go up & watch Clemson-UAB if it were cheap enough-- the winner of that game plays WVU.

I like how during this pregame show, they're talking about this player or that player, how good they are, how the teams play defense, etc, but have nothing to show except some stats they throw up on the screen because neither team has been on TV this year.  :D

Edit:  Whoa they have Gus Johnson announcing.  And we have highlights!  High school game style baseline stuff, but still.

That would require a helluva comeback/turnaround by Alabama State, and would be totally worthy of a Gus Johnson meltdown.  They're down 38-15 and just took a technical for having 6 dudes on the floor coming out of a timeout.   Still lots of time though, 3:43 left in the first half.
Title: Re: March Madness
Post by: MadBurgerMaker on March 16, 2011, 06:29:13 PM
Well shit there was just a buzzer beater, but not really a whole lot for Gus to get excited about.   UTSA white guy bench player drilled a long three with no time left to go into the half with a 48-21 lead.  Now they just need to not piss it away, and they have their first NCAA Tournament win.

Title: Re: March Madness
Post by: MadBurgerMaker on March 16, 2011, 07:53:45 PM
Yeah it counts as a win, and it's a lot more interesting, at least for the 16 seed teams, than it used to be.  I don't know what the deal is with the 11s and 12s playing, but at least a couple 16s will get a chance to play a competitive tournament game now before being crushed by the #1.  Not to mention it's more college hoops, which is never a bad thing.

UTSA went ice cold in the second half, but are clinging to a 10-12 point lead with 36 seconds left. E:  And there it is.  UTSA gets their win.  :)

That's from a tournament team heaving up shots that look like I was taking them.  Also, my ears are like that now too due to the mics really amplifying the sound all the bricks are making as they clang off the rim.

Also, I can't find the remote.

True, but was it the contact that created the block?

Nope - then there was no advantage gained by the contact. Contact, by rule, is not a foul unless an illegal advantage is gained by that contact.

You don't get bailed out of having your shot sent into the stands by a foul call, unless it was the contact that allowed the shot to get sent in the first place. That was not the case here - that ball was blocked because the defender had his hand above the ball long before it left the shooters hand. The bump on the elbow meant nada.

Routine no call. Would not call it in the first 38 minutes, sure as hell would not call it in the last 2.

(no but seriously, you should go argue this on some of the basketball forums, or at least go check out the rage posts)

As a side note, I found out today that my mom likes Arizona basketball because Sean Elliott went there.  It's like her reason for being a Raiders fan:  Because she liked the kicker some number of years ago (not SeaBass).  Good enough reason as any, I suppose.  Me, I was leaning more for Arizona not because of Elliott (who was awesome, but I completely forgot he went there), but because an Arizona - Texas matchup seems more interesting.

No, I'm pretty sure you can't throw yourself into someones arm and shoulder while they're taking a shot no matter what.   The question, very mild trolling aside, is really more if that actually happened, or if it's just the angle of the gif.

Well, you are putting the description in rather biased terms - "he threw himself into...". Officials don't look a things that way.

Here is what we see on a play like this.

A1 is going for a shot. B1 contests the shot, and blocks it. While doing so, some contact with A1 is made on the elbow.

Question: Did B1 gain an illegal advantage by that contact? Well, there is a reason officials are taught to have "slow whistles" - what was the outcome of the play? In this case, the outcome was that the shot was blocked, and it wasn't even close. So how could the defender have gained an advantage by the contact, when the shot never had any chance of going in to begin with?

This is the same philosophy that says you hold you whistle on a put back where there is a little bumping during the rebound.Don't give cheap and-1s.

Finally, watch the play at full speed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwRzNFJ67oM

It is not at all clear at full speed that the contact was before the block. At playing speed, whatever contact was there was essentially simultaneous, or close enough that you are going to consider it simultaneous.

This is a routine no call.

Excuse me?  Is this where I'm supposed to ask you if you're still raping your kid?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pedophile

Or, back in non complete fucking tool territory, you could note that the Memphis fans might actually have a legitimate complaint, which is backed up by the Arizona player coming out and saying it was a foul and since he was a) actually involved in the play, b) isn't you, and c) isn't a ref who apparently had to remove himself from the Big East tournament for fucking up so badly, he might actually know what's going on.  Also note that since there aren't any Memphis fans here, or at least none involved in this, you're vehemently arguing about shit with someone who doesn't really give a damn about it, and indeed actually wanted Arizona to win.  If you didn't read posts the way you probably ref games, these things might have been obvious to you.

BTW, there was another, more easy to see foul on the rebound.  If I were a Memphis fan, I'd probably be more pissed about that, since it's so obvious.  42 knew he did it, which was why he immediately just held both arms straight up and backed away after coming down.
Title: Re: March Madness
Post by: Berkut on March 19, 2011, 12:54:52 AM
You can ask that if you like, I guess. It would not be the first loaded question you've asked in the thread though.

Memphis fans have no legitimate complaint, and the Arizona player never said it was a foul. And even if he DID say it was a foul, his saying so doesn't make it a foul either. Hell, if we could just count on the players let us know when they foul, you wouldn't need officials at all.

And fans, especially losing fans, bitch about calls and non calls all the time. That doesn't mean they are right - they are almost never right. They are not right in this case. But that is because fans don't understand the rules, and think things like "he hit his arm, how could that not be a foul????" are legitimate arguments.

Whether or not you want Arizona to win or not doesn't make it a foul either. Why you are so upset that you need to make a discussion about how basketball is officiated personal, I am not really sure. But hey, you are  fan, you are entitled to your (wrong) opinion about what constitutes a foul or not.

BTW, the "foul" on the rebound would be a terrible call - the player who was "fouled" ended up with the ball, standing underneath the basket with an easy layup. Another example of a call that should not be made, and would not be made at any other point in the game, much less in the final seconds.

Contact is not always a foul. Just keep repeating that to yourself, and you might start understanding how basketball is officiated, as opposed to how it is watched.

Of course I wouldn't like to ask someone something like that.  Because that's a douche thing to do.  What is wrong with you?

QuoteMemphis fans have no legitimate complaint, and the Arizona player never said it was a foul. And even if he DID say it was a foul, his saying so doesn't make it a foul either.

Yeah, I mean, on one hand I have you.  On the other, I have a D1 player for a major team.  If he DID say it was a foul, then sorry, but I gotta go with the guy who's actually involved at that level.  Since you're asking me about beating my wife atm, I've gone ahead and assumed he did say it and I'll now tell you to go fuck yourself and take it up with your own player.   How's that?

QuoteHell, if we could just count on the players let us know when they foul, you wouldn't need officials at all.

This might make sense if he had called it on himself during the game.

QuoteWhether or not you want Arizona to win or not doesn't make it a foul either. Why you are so upset that you need to make a discussion about how basketball is officiated personal, I am not really sure. But hey, you are  fan, you are entitled to your (wrong) opinion about what constitutes a foul or not.

The only thing I might be considered upset about is some dude on a message board asking me about beating my wife, although that really just makes me think you're a jerkoff.  Otherwise, it's just a late game no call that could have gone either way, no matter what you say (and now, reading the Arizona player's press conference blurb, is pretty much what he said).

QuoteBTW, the "foul" on the rebound would be a terrible call - the player who was fouled ended up with the ball, standing underneath the basket with an easy layup. Another example of a call that should not be made, and would not be made.

Of course not.  It's okay as long as he ends up with the ball standing "underneath" the basket.  No wait, that kind of shit gets called all the time.  It's why the reaction was the way it was.  42 was praying it wouldn't get called right then.

QuoteContact is not always a foul.

No, it's not, and nor should it be, since there would be a whistle every half second.  THIS is not regular old contact though, it's more than that and it's in a game deciding situation.  This is why the news articles and shit are popping up about it, and why that gif was almost immediately made.

But yeah:
Quotego fuck yourself and take it up with your own player

Will be the response from now on to anything you say to me about it.  If you want to discuss or talk some shit about the Texas - Arizona game on Sunday, I'm totally down for that.  The winner probably plays Duke, then probably UConn/SDSU, then....ugh...

If you want to argue about this dumb Memphis shit with someone, go find a Tigers fan somewhere (there are one or two on Something Awful, I think, unless those were just outside parties as well) or find an article and use the comments.  It's my own fault that I've given you even this many responses about this meaningless crap.

That was not a foul.  I understand why the Memphis fans are crying about it but that's tough shit.  If anything the shooter initiated contact by extending his elbow as he goes up.  Of course you can only see that in the ridiculous slo-mo gif that was posted here.  No way an official can call that in real time without replay, if he had there would be even more people bitching that the official had "decided the game" the other way.

TBH, I don't think, from the angle he had, the ref could even really see the contact on the block anyway, so it's not really fair to say he screwed up.

Either way, my goddamn bracket at least looks okay so far in the West. Are you really getting all steaming mad and stuff because of the beating your wife question?

That is kind of funny - I posted a link which, I thought, explained the question rather thoroughly, although I am kind of surprised you didn't already now what it meant.

Your question "Are you saying you can hit the shooter on the arm" was a classic logical fallacy, and the canonical example of the fallacy of the loaded question is "Have you stopped beating your wife yet". Asking you that question is simply a way of illustrating the fallacy you were making - I wasn't seriously asking if you beat your wife.

Edit: Seriously though, forget that shit Berk.  Being irritated with you is fucking with my qi and I don't like it (I also feel like a giant douche for the kid fucking thing even though...blah...whatever I apologize for that).  Let's talk about some Texas - Arizona.  Looks like a very good, physical matchup.

No worries.

I don't know about Arizona - I really don't. They suddenly just stopped playing defense a few weeks ago. Now teams just routinely drive to the rim while the entire team watches them go by. We can outscore people anyway, but it is rather odd that a team like Memphis is making a game like that close when it should have been a comfortable win.

If Arizona can hit the three consistently and play just a little defense, they can beat anyone.

Yeah Texas is kind of an unknown to me at this point too.  Even in the Oakland game, they were totally different one half to the next, although to be fair, they changed some things up to try to slow it down or something.  Whatever they were trying to do, it wasn't working.  They actually made free throws though, amazingly enough, which is something they've been...not so good at...this year.

Just watched a replay of the 5-second call.

I cannot come up with a way to consider that anything other than a pretty bad fuck up on the part of the official. He clearly had a 4 count by his arm, so why didn't he give the kid the TO?

That is just bizarre. The offcial later said he had 5 in his head - but why would your in the head count be different from your arm count? Hell, I don't think I could manage that even if I tried.

Texas always finds new and exciting ways to lose in the tournament.  This was definitely a new one.

Congrats to the Cats.  Even without that bizarre call Texas did not deserve to win, they let Arizona have way too much success outside the arc for a team that centers everything around perimeter defense.  The once mighty Texas defense has been pretty shaky the past 10 games.

Oh and thanks Big East.  I actually thought you were good and now my bracket is toast.

Even though I made a conscious effort to hedge my bets & not be too much of a Big East homer, my brackets *still* got screwed over by Big East teams.  I don't know if I've ever seen a conference so dominant in non-conference play throughout the regular season disappoint so much come tournament time as the Big East did this year.

WVU gets a pass since they played an extremely talented & under-seeded UK team, as do the two teams that lost to Big East teams.  And I can't fault Nova since they were a 9 seed losing to an 8 seed.  St. John's hasn't been to the tourney in eons so I didn't expect a whole lot there.  But Georgetown, Pitt, Louisville & Notre Dame are all on my shit list.

As bad as my brackets are, if Duke goes all the way I'm pretty much guaranteed money on my Bengals bracket.

My man love for Charles Barkley just continues to grow.

AT half time, three of the four analysts are sitting there gushing about how swell Duke is, how Arizona cannot handle their experience and poise and blahblahblah. Charles just sits there, and when they get to him..."Arizona is going to win this game."

Then don't call them regional finals & don't name the brackets with regional names.

Because nothing it does has face value sense. You always have to dig deeper on everything. When it's not Bball, it's the craziness that is the BCS & BFS, Title 9 intepretation, Hockey status as sport.

Everything is complicated.
Title: Re: March Madness
Post by: The Minsky Moment on March 25, 2011, 10:54:26 AM
The regions refer to where the games are played.

The NCAA usually makes some effort to put the 1 seeds in the region near their location so that the favorite can play a regional final relatively locally, but their main concern is balancing the brackets, as it should be.

I tend to agree that it would make more sense if they didn't name the regions geographically when they're not geographicall based, but it's hardly a big deal.

As for the rest of your post, well, we've discussed the BCS here a lot already, I don't know what BFS is, Title 9 is federal law that the NCAA doesn't really have much to do with, and I'm not familiar with any controvery involving hockey's status as a sport.

But they looked very, very good in the Big East Tourney.  My dad do a round by round bracket every year, which we usually forget to pick for once the first break hits.  This year, I actually had picked VCU through the sit in game and the first two rounds of the tourney.  Throw in my usual pick of taking my team, aka UCONN, and it makes me kind of wish I'd filled out a real bracket.  Oh well.  AT least it's been an interesting Tourney and something to get me through till the start of baseball season and the inevitable downturn of the 2nd place Spring Training Royals!  hahaha

Also, watch the one on the U. Totally hilarious. Especially the Cotton bowl stuff.

Oh god yes.

What vacated titles? So far I don't know of any champion that has had to do so, but a few teams with Final Four Appearances and Runner ups (Michigan '92 & '93)

UMass had its 4-1 1996 NCAA Tournament record vacated when the NCAA discovered that UMass player Marcus Camby had accepted money and gifts from an agent

and

Memphis (On August 20, the NCAA ruled that Rose was ineligible and forced Memphis to vacate the entire 2007-08 season, including the NCAA Tournament and its standing as runner-up. It took the line that even though Rose's score had not been thrown out by the Educational Testing Service, which administers the SAT, until after the season, strict liability required that Rose be ruled ineligible. The committee also determined that even without the questions about his SAT score, he would have lost his eligibility in December 2007 due to his brother being allowed to travel with the team for free)

Wasn't there also a Turkish center that played in one of the big teams that was forced to sit out because he had gotten some money back when he played in Turkey? I got the impression that the league was being way overzealous with the "you can't get any money at all to play with us" mantra.

Enes Kanter, he made verbal to U of Washington when he was lighty recruited, then after some showing in Summer Camps he switched to Kentucky. But before he ever played a game it came to light he and family had taken money from Turkish pro clubs.

Overzealous? Heh the mantra of NCAA is they are amateurs, but as it has been for pretty much the whole existence of the  organization has been dealing with students getting money and goods from 3rd parties.

But that seems ridiculous to me. The guy was playing pro basketball in Europe before going to the US for university. I *could* understand wanting to implement hardcore amateurism during the college years, as backwards and disingenious as it seems to me, but punishing the player from something that happened before he played there seems ludicrous.

Being an amateur is like being a virgin.  It doesn't grow back.

Oddly enough though amateur status goes sport by sport.  Some college had a kicker who played for a while in pro fodbol before washing out.

QuoteDevin Barclay (born April 9, 1983 in Annapolis, Maryland) is an amateur American football placekicker for The Ohio State Buckeyes. He was formerly a professional soccer player,[1] who last played for the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.

Also, Joe Bauserman of Ohio State used to play in the Pirates minor league system. Frankly, he sucks at both.

Yep many 'amateur' football players have been professional baseball players before or during their college careers, including Heisman winner Chris Weinke.  Yet at the same time they wouldn't let Jeremy Bloom receive endorsement money so he could try and make the '06 Olympic skiing team.

Well I think Weinke was like Jake Locker and most other guys who have signed baseball contracts and going to college on own dime, not receiving a scholarship from the school

Not sure about that.  Wasnt this the first time this many teams from one conference made it to the dance.  I think their collective performance is going to weigh heavily against giving that much preference to a conference again.
