Title: Planning Summer Vacation
Post by: Korea on January 19, 2010, 11:47:28 AM
My sister is planning our summer vacation and has decided that we are going to New Orleans and then Biloxi Mississippi.

Should I be excited or try to change her mind? I don't really know anything about either of these areas. I just want to see some ocean. :(

New Orleans is a great town if you like food and drinking (there's also some great architecture).  As to ocean, I thought you were pretty close to the ocean in SC?

New Orleans really isn't on the ocean (I think it might techically be as I think Lake Ponchartrain is a brackwater inlet of the Gulf), but Biloxi definitely is. :)

Well, I am close to the beach but I was wanting to see more of the white sands/clear water type beach which you cant see here in SC but my sister told me I could in Biloxi, MI. Not sure though. :/

Yeah, originally my sister said we would just go to New Orleans but I told her to screw that because I wanted to go to a beach so she added in Biloxi.

Korea, to get that you need to go to Destin/Ft. Walton, which is closer to you than Biloxi anyway.  I don't know what kind of beaches they have in Biloxi (Scip will know, I'm sure) but I don't think they look like that.

Why not go to Miami?
Title: Re: Planning Summer Vacation
Post by: Caliga on January 19, 2010, 01:00:51 PM
I'm not sure if Miami has the kind of beach she is apparently looking for.  Also, it would take her twice as long to get there and a trip combining Miami and New Orleans would be kind of impractical.

Korea, go to http://images.google.com (http://images.google.com) and search on 'Destin' to see what I mean.

I figured and Florida is where I actually want to go but my sister says she doesn't want to go somewhere she's already been. Well, I haven't been there! Arg.  :yucky: :yucky: :yucky:

Pensacola has nice white sand beaches and is closer to Nawlins than Destin.  Plus you get the Bue Angels!  And a fort!

Yeah, that whole area of the Florida panhandle (the "Crystal Coast", or "Redneck Riviera"  ) does.  IIRC it also extends into Alabama at Gulf Shores.

This thread depresses me as I realize that with the baby coming we won't actually be going anywhere interesting for the summer.  We've taken some pretty good summer vacations for the last 5 years or so...

:D But I love my sister and love going on vacations with her. This year we just can't seem to be able to agree on a place. :( I was told by her that Destin is full of drunk college kids. Not sure how true that is. I haven't vacationed anywhere except hilton head, sc and atlanta, ga so I don't actually know that much about good vacation spots. :(

Destin is full of drunk college kids around the Spring Break season, but I don't think it is in the summer.  I haven't been down there yet but a co-worker goes these every summer in August and loves it.

New Orleans is worth a trip if you're into history, really outstanding cuisine, and drinking on the street (where it's legal).  I liked it but it's nothing phenomenal.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB.

Actually, once a kid hits one, you can leave them with family for 4-5 days while you run off somewhere.

Check it out.  My guess is that staying in some foriegn locations would be cheaper then vacationing in the States.  The only additional cost would be the travel which may or might not be more expensive.

Well, you can usually expect filthy unfriendly natives, unsanitary conditions, and food and waterborne illness.  Even in Western Europe or something.  My brother came back from Europe with scabies.  Visit an Indian reservation and you'll get pretty much the entire experience.

The problem is that, if you are nervous, then it would be advisable to start your foreign travel with easily-accessible places such as the UK, Italy and so on. But they are expensive especially with the current exchange rates.

There are also still cheap places, but they will be more different
