Curious mind wants to know.  For non Canadian citizens/residents of course ;)

Would you say your opinion of Canada has changed over the last 3-4 years?
If so, why?

There's no Jaron option here, I'd like this to be as serious as we can be on Languish, please :)

Stephen Harper has pleased me the few times Canada has had something to say internationally so it has gone up.  The Liberals used to say the most retarded bullshit.

I've been to Montreal, Toronto twice, Waterloo/Kitchener, and Halifax (+ the ferry to Dartmouth) and enjoyed all of them greatly.   :)

I'm tentatively planning a trip up to Eastern Quebec and New Brunswick this winter/spring.  Ideally, I'd love to visit Newfoundland, but it seems prohibitively expensive/far away.   :(

I ordered a chicken salad platter and the waitress asked if I wanted all white meat or "just whatever."  I of course picked the latter, and though it had some inch-sized pieces of bone and other weird chunks in it, it was actually delicious, and a huge portion for a very reasonable price.

That's the kind of recommendation that belongs on the menu

Easiest way: take the plane.
Cheapest way: take the ferry from Norht-Sidney, Nova Scotia.

My father went to visit a few years ago, and he liked it.

It's one hell of a ride coming from the US though.  North-Sidney is like, on the extreme north of Nova Scotia.  From Halifax, I think it's a 8-9 hrs ride.  You figure the rest of the trip ;)

If I were you, I'd first visit New-Brunswick.  It's a relatively big province with lots of things to see, particularly on the Acadian peninsula (south east of NB).  This trip alone can take a week if you stop at various places.  Really, there's nothing in the center of province except wood and mooses, so it's all about the coast line, south and east of St-John. :)

Oh, and there's not much to see in eastern Quebec during winter.  There are wonderful ski resorts in/near Quebec city (Mont Ste-Anne, Stoneham, Massif du Sud), but further east, closer to where I live... not much but snow.  I think most of the museums are even closed for the winter.  So, really, not much to see.  Unless you want to do winter camping, ice-fishing.

Thanks, that seems more reasonable.   :)  I personally can't ski and have no interest in learning, or in any winter sports.  I was interested in seeing some of the great Canadian Shield landscape, but I guess winter's not the best time...

Seriously though, no need to bash southern Ontario. Objectively it lacks the rugged beauty of, say, the Rockies, but it has its own charms - particularly on display in fall, with the leaves turning.

Ok, I asked 'caused opponents of Harper and the PCC keep repeating that Canada's international stance has changed for the worst since Harper was elected.

I know it's bullshit.  Canada is, on the international stage, a very minor country, not to say worthless.  You go outside your country and you say you're Canadian people are gonna say "nice...".  So, the idea that somehow Canada had a superior status among other nations of the world was ludicrous to me.  But again this morning, Chrétien, while visiting France repeated that Canada's international reputation was "tarnished by the action of the Conservatives".  In other words, Harper = Bush ;)

I just wanted confirmation that I was right: nobody cares about Canada.  We'd need to be really pretty bad ass, say, ally with North Korea or supply nuclear material to Iran so that foreigners would start hating us ;)  Wich I think is pretty unlikely.

So, I'm glad that there's one less myth today :P

As informal as this survey is, it was a nice exercise to do, I believe.

Actually, in eastern Quebec, there isn't much to do except for outdoor pleasures even in summer: rafting, hunting, fishing (salmon), whales sight-seeing, kayak, etc.

There's a few musuems here and there, some art galleries with genuine Inuit sculptures made in Taiwan ;) , but really no big cities.  You can hike some mountains in Gaspesia if wether permits, you can walk or bike on some trails, but aside that...  Gaspesia (easternmost part of the province) has been quite neglected by the governments in the last 20 years, and as such is experiencing a steady decline, high unemployment rates and the population his very poor.  My friends visited the peninsula a few years ago and came back 2 days later, out of a 2 weeks trip.

It really depends on what you want to do in Quebec.  If you're the big city type, there's really only Montreal to see.

Quebec city in itself is beautiful to see, in winter or in summer.  Imho, it's the best a city can offer: not too big, not too small, decent prices on food&lodging, and nice sightseeing to do.

In January there's the annual Red Bull Crashed Ice event and the Winter Carnival in early February with some nice sculptures on ice.  There's the Musée de la Civilisation (http://www.mcq.org/index_en.html) with various expos; depending wich one, it's either a must see or it-can-wait-later thing :D

Have fun on your trip!  Let me know when you're coming :)

Higher.

Mostly due to my drive through Canada.

Annoyed by the small hassle I had at the border, but...

- Gruff but friendly staff a stop for food along the AlCan.  First exposure to poutine (not too bad, really)
- Noticed a bunch of local residents, way out in the Canadian boonies, picking up trash along the highway.  Only prison convicts do that in America.
- HOTT 6-foot tall redhead at the Costco in Grand Prairie.
- Super HOTT/cute redhead flag-lady on the highway repair crew between Whitehorse and the Alaska border.

Canada is merely decomposing slowly under our eyes.  ^_^

And as we all know, the old must die for the new to emerge.

ah, but people have been saying that since 1970.  Time to move on, methinks.  Independance is not dead, just sleeping for a while.

No, it hasn't changed.  I keep hearing the same stories over and over again from Hong Kongers who left Canada and came back here - that it is impossible to make money over there.  It is a good place for some, but only if money/career is not a consideration.

Perhaps.  But I have yet to hear a single story of a Hong Konger who moved to Canada and made at least the same amount of money as they did in Hong Kong.

Eventually Quebec will get its wish for independence and the rest of federal Canada, losing its population and economic center, will petition for US statehood for their provinces.  What would be left we'd make part of the National Parks system.

Yes, that would be nice.

Viper, if anyone did a valid poll about your question my bet would be that of the small percentage of people that actually had an opinion, that opinion will not have changed at all.   We are like the non descript quiet kid that sits in the back of the class.  The only time anyone ever notices him is when they pick sides for a pickup game of hockey -  which never really happens.

We spend a lot of time trying to explain to people that we are not that boring and that we do things that are worth noticing but it never really works.

CC is right, the only thing that rescues Canada from complete obscurity is the possibility that the federation might break down one day.

However, I don't think this is a bad thing. In general non-Canadians seem to have a good opinion of the place, the country is rich and stable; no first-class cricket though, probably due to the climate.
