Title: Tennis or: How the Americans Learned to Love Wozniacki
Post by: Liep on September 08, 2009, 04:03:44 AM
Right, so I'll properly get a lot of bad reactions to making an entire thread dedicated to this wonderful sport. But nevertheless I thought it was now OK. The reason for this? Wozniacki is now googled more times than Obama in the nation under God. (http://www.google.com/trends/hottrends?sa=X&date=2009-9-7)

Sure.. her name might be coupled with search terms such as: breasts and hot pics, but still I think it proves a point. Namely that we need a thread to show pictures of Wozniacki.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.recordere.dk%2Fforum%2Fuploads%2FJanLarsen%2F2009-01-21_144956_Caroline_Wozniacki.jpg&hash=cf4598cff99abb60bac5abdb940f9bcc6903a795)

Another reason for this thread is that she's now in the quarter final for the first time in a grand slam tournament, going head to head against a 17 year old American this wednesday.

If people wanted to oogle tennis chicks with big boobies they'd be going after the Romanian one that created an internet backlash when she announced she'd get breast reduction.

Who?

What we really need is a thread about Blue Ridge Log Cabins.

You know. If women's football made it obligatory for players to wear miniskirts they'd probally gain quite a bit in popularity... :shifty:
Women's rugby of course should NOT do that.

Just look at Kournikova.
Moderatly attractive, probally wouldn't have gotten anywhere if not for playing tennis on the side. But she did and tennis became very much a secondary money spinner for her.

Arguably Mariano Rivera would never have made a list of the top eight baseball players at any point in his career, but no one says Rivera hasn't amounted to much baseball wise and only won the World Series because he was on Jeter's team. He is actually going into the hall of fame.

Thing is she's probably 100 times more popular that Graf could have dream of.

But don't take me as a Tennis purist. I don't even like the sport.

She never won a tournament. She wasn't #1 in singles, I think her best is #8.

She did win a tournament--in fact a grand slam.

Single?

Doubles. Those count too.

Kournikova took a ton of talent and promise in tennis and used it as a stepping stone to underwear modeling and dating hockey players. I think a lot of the backlash she gets is because people are upset that the path she took actually got her more fame and fortune than many very good tennis players receive.

Kournikova was trash.

Unfortunately so is women's tennis at this moment. After Henin's departure, anarchy ensued in the top ten: there is not a single great tennis player, only a lot of good ones, that share among themselves on a weekly basis the first places. At this moment Dinara Safina, another mediocre player that never won a Grand Slam Tournament, is no. 1. The level of performance is so low that Kim Clijsters managed to win the US Open, after a two year absence, and is now in the top 20, only after three tournaments.

And Kournikova being compared with Graf... are you crazy? Steffi Graf was like the freaking Tennis Goddess: 22 Grand Slam Titles on all surfaces (including a Golden Slam, a performance that is still singular in tennis). She battled all the great ones, from Navratilova, Evert and Sabatini to Sanchez, Hingis and Seles. Kournikova is mediocrity with a nice face.

Are you not literate?  Can you not read?

I said I am not comparing Kournikova to Graf as Graf is one of the all-time greats and clearly she is was not up to that standard or even an elite standard much less to a Graf standard.  How you got that anybody WAS comparing her is...well...I am glad English is not your first language or I would be embarrased for you.

It wasn't directed at you. There was another comment that suggested Kournikova is 100 times more famous than Graf. And I take it hard because Graf was my first love in tennis.

As for the language commentary, don't make me laugh. Pigs will fly the day I'll try to compete with an american in a language competition.

But she is.  Kournikova is a D-list celebrity, whereas Graf is merely a tennis legend.  Celebrities are far more famous than people who play obscure sports really well.

I disagree with you in regard to the Williams sisters (even though I personally dislike them.) As for the rest of the current top ten, you could not be more correct if you tried.

The Williams sisters also get bonus points for playing in doubles tournaments, as all the great players of the past did. Most other top ranked singles players seem to feel that doubles are either beneath them or too much effort these days.

Sports is a crazy thing.  If a lawyer or investment banker became recognized as the 8th best in the world at what they did would they get crushed, called shit, and worthless?  No, being the 8th best at anything in the world an one point in someone's life is pretty damned impressive.

Also why do we take it so personally if an athlete doesn't strive to be the absolute best in the world?  If the above banker worked just hard enough to set himself and his family up for life would he get crushed too?  Not likely, but if an athlete does it, people are personally offended by it.  Makes no sense.

Wozniacki won her 2nd  match in the Doha WTA tournament, and what a spectacular match that was. Wozniacki had a thigh injury that was clearly quite painful. I've never seen anyone cry that much, scream that loud or look so tormented in any sport before, but she just kept going.

How are they going to do it?  Are the refs going to keep count, and issue penalties once the count of moans exceeds a limit?

Don't know how tennis refing works (don't actually watch tennis). But maybe make it a fault like the one they get when serving (they have two chances, right?)

If they're serious about it, they shouldn't impose any in-match penalty, but rather hit players with monetary fines.
