Which school would you rather attend? Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry or Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters?
Stewart's or McAvoy's timeline? :hmm:

It's also got hotter female classmates, a cool-ass jet and the danger room.
But you're also stuck with whatever (possibly) lame, singular mutation that you have.
It would suck to be the guy who can only just do something like sonic farting.
In real life, schools should be judged on one criterion - the present value of the income streams of its graduates.
But there should be an additional criterion for fantasy schools, namely the survival rate of its students.
My problem with Hogwarts is that a lot of students end up dead in the Battle of Hogwarts. Even though the students seem to land gainful employment after graduation, the mortality rate seems too high.
I am not familiar enough with the X-men universe to comment on the other one.
Seems an unfair comparison, Mono.
The X-men seem to have remarkable power and going to the school helps them control it.
At Hogwarts, they have to learn how to tap into and use their power.
In both cases they'd get stronger but with Hogwarts they start completely defenseless and grow slowly as they study.
That being said, after graduating they go onto boring bureaucratic jobs or apparently use their magic to cook Sunday dinner.
Neither one of them is NCAA Division 1, so fuck 'em both.
This maybe the ultimate Languish thread.
I may not necessarily be saying that's a good thing.
:hmm: Britain or New York?
I'm leaning towards Xavier's, for the hotties.
Good question Tim. :nerd:

We're probably all a little too old to have been potterheads. Maybe the Jedi academy rather than Hogwarts.
Anyhow, I'd pick Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. I've already got a note to slip to Kitty Pryde.

The Battle of Hogwarts apparently took place in 1998, so I would have been 11 and right in the thick of it. On the other hand, the wizarding world seems to have settled down since, which can't be said of the X-Men universe. Plus, as a wizard, you get to settle into domestic tranquility in your magical shadow world, whereas as a mutant you'll always have to deal with tension with the normals.

I don't think there's any question that I'd rather be a Potterverse-style wizard than a mutant (unless maybe I got one of the
really good mutant powers
and didn't have any obvious physical characteristic that marked me as a mutant), but as far as the schools themselves, Xavier's wins hands down.
Yeah, in terms of wizard vs mutant, I have to think that being a wizard wins hands down.
But if you try to put that aside (say if your mutant power was to use magic... I dunno, just roll with it)... which is the better school to attend? I'm more familiar with Hogwarts than the X-Men, so at first I thought the major knock against Hogwarts would be the Battle of Hogwarts, but quick googling suggests that the X-Men school has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times. I guess the mutants get to wear more flamboyant clothes than some dumpy-looking wizards robes, so maybe there's that.

Not for me; I had a schoolboy fictional-character crush on Kitty Pryde when I was in junior high, so I was just playing around with that. Given that her boyfriend at the time was made out of steel, that would have probably ended poorly for me had I lived in the Marvel universe.
The Marvel universe simply seems more fun to me than the world of Harry Potter.
I also had a tween crush on Kitty Pryde. We'll need to fight for her, Sav. See you in the danger room after Math.
Totally Hogwarts.
The opportunities are endless, the castle is fucking awesome, and come on, guys! McGonnegal is the best fucking magical person in the world!

Didn't all boys of a certain age?
The problem with being a student at Xavier's is that they all tend to get killed. People complain about how a bunch of kid wizards died in the Battle of Hogwart's, but Xavier's death rate has been astronomical. Even with major characters coming back to life, the minor ones don't. All those former mutant kids that got de-powered by Scarlet Witch after House of M got blown to smithereens by Purifiers. Every once in a while, some low-visibility student gets killed for shock value.

I suppose it's lower risk to be working for the Ministry of Magic than it would be to try and attach yourself to Magneto's next attempt to take over the world. But the rewards wouldn't be as great.

I'd go with Potter world.
Both universes would be a boondoggle for lawyers, in terms of new regulatory issues, insurance claims, and damages claims of all kinds. However, Marvel characters have a bad habit of messing up NYC; Voldemort and his cronies are usually content to stay in London.

Presumably there are wizards in America as well. We just don't hear about their crazy going ons since the books are set in the UK.
The new Potterverse franchise is set in Prohibition's America. It might even the score.

A real school, not some nerd fantasy place.
Well, Hogwarts has a long, venerable and mostly peaceful history, whereas my sense about the X-Men academy is that forever erupting in violence. So I think I would choose the calm (if somewhat staid) and quintessentially English world of Hogwarts over the dystopian horror of X-Men.

Following Keynes's and Barrister Boy's thinking, the Marvel Universe would be the obvious choice for me. Careers in science and technology are limitless there. Technology can even kick the ever-loving crap out of magic or super-powers.

Well, Hogwarts has a long, venerable and mostly peaceful history,\
Every single year covered in the books has violence and horror.
Reasonable to believe it's not entirely out of character.
Well, from what I recall from reading the series, Hogwarts is several centuries old at least – and the violence of the two encounters vs. Voldemort (the second of which is the subject of the HP series) was rather unprecedented and thus the exception to life at the place rather than the rule (and IIRC Hogwarts itself wasn't even that central to the first war against Voldemort).
The evidence is that the previous major wizarding conflict seems to have occurred off in central Europe back in 1945 and been rather more limited, and also there doesn't seem to be any real mention of other violence at the place either in the memories of the parents or in any of the mentions made to the history of Hogwarts or in the history of the English wizarding world generally. I'd also say the character of its institutions, functions and rituals suggests a largely peaceful culture.

I tend to agree that anime is a form of art. Most people will consider paintings as a form of art. Anime is just lots of paintings shown in rapid succession.
As to whether it is the nerdiest, I actually think anime is more accessible than others. I know next to nothing about paintings and sculpture. I walk into a famous museum, look at the famous paintings and I think, oh this is supposed to be a really good painting. But I have no idea why, because I don't know the history, context, the technique etc. On the other hand, it is a easier for a layman to appreciate a story in anime form, as no prior knowledge is needed.
nerdy in the sense that, usually, only weird internet types watch anime. discussing anime IRL is a sure way to lose all integrity and become known as "that guy" in a typical american social circle. from what I've seen, responsible internet anime fan groups encourage their members to hide their interest in anime for this very reason
