Title: 2015-2016 NCAA Basketball - PDH Forgets Football
Post by: PDH on October 27, 2015, 07:45:39 AM
Right, time to kick this one off.  Wyoming has their first exhibition on the 7th.  I went to a practice and I am amazed that even though I am no older the players are younger each year.

After a conference tournament title last year there will be a drop off, but somehow the Pokes are getting talent to come to Laramie.  Maybe it is the wonderful January weather.

Yeah seems like 18,000 years is too far in advance of the season to start the thread. Really not sure what the lineups are going to look like.

And no idea what to expect with 7 freshman on the team and only one returning starter.

Yep. Shanghai if Mono wants to attend. I guess for all those Texas and Washington Alums living in Shanghai.

I have even less of an idea what to expect. I was so anti-Barnes at the end I barely watched the team last year so I hardly know the team and then they have a new coach so...yeah.

Uggh, Arizona does not play anyone until they run up against Gonzaga.

Gonzaga should just join the Pac-12 for basketball already. They play nearly every single Pac-12 school anyway.

UDub is trying to kill me.
Triple overtime vs UCLA in 1st conference game
comeback down 22 in second half vs USC
and overtime wins vs Wazzu in 1st road game of season.

In 1st in pac-12 after second weekend of conference games.

KenPom predicted a one-point win by Michigan at home versus #3 Maryland.  Every Michigan analysis told KenPom "go home, you're drunk" because Michigan was missing its best player and Maryland's only loss was an away game at North Carolina.

Turns out KenPom's formula is more accurate than any of the humans, because Michigan put Maryland away, 70-67.  Sure, it is mostly chance that the formula was more accurate in this one case, but it is amusing because of all the crow being eaten this morning.

Arizona is terrible, tied for second to last in the conference, almost certainly has no shot at the tournament at this rate, and Miller is likely to be fired.

Yeah. Texas will be lucky to get into the NIT in this league. Especially since as soon as I got excited about this season their indispensable player injured himself in practice. Allen Iverson had it right.

I think Texas is a pretty easy tournament pick unless they completely implode.  But yeah, playing through a Big 12 schedule is just brutal.

I had the WVU - Iowa State game marked as a loss before it started last night.  WVU hadn't been playing well, teams seemed to have their press figured out and everything just looked stacked against them.  Started out rough but WVU pulled it out, thanks to Devin Williams regaining his mojo (17 points, 18 rebounds).  So they win a tough game against the #13 team, and now they get to play #15 Baylor.  After that they get to play #7 Kansas again, which will be seeking revenge.  If WVU goes 5-4 in their last 9 games, I'll be ecstatic.

I think Barnes got me accustomed to Texas falling apart in conference. And then they lost their best player.

But they are going crazy now, guys who I thought were empty uniforms are suddenly contributing big time. I am not even sure what to think but I am starting to feel that this team might be special. I am going to make sure to go to the Baylor game in a few weeks so I can at least see them one more time before whatever their destiny is plays out.

Wyoming is too young.  Despite having the 5th best individual scorer in the country, or because of that, the team just can't get it done.  Freshmen and sophomores everywhere.  Oh well, at least I have last year to cling to for a few years.

So I went to see Texas play Texas Tech this saturday because they gave me a discount for attending the Baseball preseason event I always attend...so I did. Wow this team is impressive even more so in person. I left feeling really good but then I looked it up and out of the remaining 7 games Texas has left in the regular season 6 of them are against teams in the top 15...and the other one is a road game at Kansas State which just upset #1 Oklahoma.

Damn this conference is nuts.

I'd say they have the best guards in the Big12.  They're such skilled ball handlers that WVU's press was negated in both games.

Anyway I'm guessing their record vs. the top 14 is 6-2 since they swept WVU this year :P

Kansas won their 12th consecutive Big 12 regular season championship. They have also won 6 Conference tournament championship in that time. Bill Self is unbelievable, it does not matter how good the rest of the conference is they just dominate every single season.

TCU managed to hold on and beat Texas Tech, giving WVU the easiest opponent in the 2nd round of the Big 12 tournament.  Assuming the win, WVU would then have to play Oklahoma, which they'll lose unless Hield comes down with the flu.  Winning at least one conference tournament game helps preserve a small amount of dignity before heading into the NCAA tourney.

Can't wait for next week.  With all the parity amongst the to 10 or so teams, this year's Big Dance is gonna be YUGE.

Yeah, that's the problem with being in such a physical, competitive conference.  With 7 of the 10 teams pretty much having a lock on tournament bids, how about we have a nice, relaxing conference tournament so the guys have a chance to rest/heal up??  :P

Anyway I'm increasingly downgrading Big 12 teams each year in my own brackets as a way to hedge my bets.  If a lot of them get knocked out early that helps my bracket, and if they win, yay Big 12 and who cares about the bracket.  Gonna be tough not to predict Kansas winning it all this year.

In my Bengals pool I'm sure we'll have a lot of people picking Xavier since it's the top-ranked local area team.  I'd be tempted to pick them to win it since Xavier always does great in the tournament and this is their best team in a long time.  But since they'll be over-selected in the pool so the smart money is on someone else.  I think Yi and maybe others here last year criticized my decision not to pick UK to win it all since I knew they'd be over-selected in my pool.  But my strategy: worked.

  Tough not to pick Kansas this year.  Which means they'll screw us all.  My son made all his picks by himself (albeit after a lengthy lecture from me).  He ended up picking Oklahoma to win it all.  Which may be a sound pick. I don't think anyone in our pool will have them and if Hield regains his mojo he could run the tables.

Just hope the Big 12 as a group can throw off its tournament curse and take care of business in the first couple of rounds.  And I need WVU to make it to the Elite 8 to shut up all the Xavier fans here who are guaranteeing a win over Huggins.

Arizona, even for not being that good, played atrociously. They had no business even being in that game at all, it was kind of bizarre how WSU just kind of went away for 12 minutes to let Arizona make a game of it.

Oregon got a #1 seed.  Why do we need to pretend that west coast college basketball is really a thing??

Oh FFS Baylor

Yeah, thankfully I factored the predictable Big 12 choke into my Sweet 16.  Baylor and Texas Tech hurt me yesterday, but I wasn't dumb enough to trust them in the second round.

I had them in my Sweet 16.  One guy in my money bracket had them in his Elite 8 (beating Michigan State  )

I swear, if I ignore a mediocre team that is hot at the end of the year they burn me.  If I pay attention to them and pick them to do well, they burn me.  OH well.

The funniest thing about MSU's loss was all the floor slapping.  It's always been a jerk thing to do, but doing it in a game you never led, while being upset by a 15th-seed...  Sparty gotta spart.

Wow, your team exits in the first round after blowing a double digit lead to a mediocre Notre Dame team, and you are posting about Sparty? At the end of the day, Sparty finished 2nd in the Big Ten regular season, beat you guys, and won the big ten tournament. So yeah, they went down in the first round just like Michigan, but at least they are going to be hanging a banner for the season.

They have also won 7 of the last 8 in football. The rising senior class of Michigan has never beaten Sparty.

Seems like they have worked their way into your head.

It has been like this ever since 2010. Augie has lost it. At least they had that run in 2014. As a yuge UT baseball fan it has been rough. The crowds keep getting smaller and mediocrity is setting in hard. It is almost like the second after Colt McCoy went down the whole University has been cursed.

Dwayne 'The Pearl' Washington died today after a battle with brain cancer. :(

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/15277787/former-syracuse-great-dwayne-pearl-washington-dies

He didn't have much of an NBA career but man he was a lot of fun to watch at Syracuse.  Even though I grew up on the west coast, the Big East in the 1980s was the high point of college basketball to me.  Ewing, Mullen, Washington, Walter Berry, Villanova's first miracle; back then college hoops was my favorite sport by a pretty large margin.
