Title: Gov. Mark Sanford goes crazy, disappears
Post by: Caliga on June 23, 2009, 07:52:35 AM
Does refusing federal bailout money make one..... disappear? :menace: :shifty: :tinfoil:

QuoteS.C. Gov. Sanford takes a hike... on Appalachian Trail

(Columbia, S.C.) S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford's staff said late Monday that the governor is hiking on the Appalachian Trail, ending four days during which staff and state officials said they had not heard from him.

Neither Sanford's office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford since he left the mansion Thursday in a black Suburban SUV assigned to his security detail, said state Sen. Jake Knotts , R-Lexington, and three others familiar with the situation, but who declined to be identified.

Joel Sawyer, the governor's spokesman would not disclose where on the trail the governor was hiking, nor would he reveal whether Sanford was hiking alone.

Sanford's last known location was near Atlanta late last week. A mobile telephone tower there picked up a signal from his phone, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Since then, the governor's state and personal phones had been turned off, and Sanford had not responded to phone or text messages, a source said. Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.

First lady Jenny Sanford said Monday her husband has been gone for several days over Father's Day weekend and she did not know where.

She said she was not concerned.

"He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids," Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press while vacationing with the couple's four sons at their Sullivan's Island beach house.

The two-term governor is chairman of the Republican Governors Association. This spring, Sanford became known nationally as the most outspoken governor who opposed federal stimulus money. That position won Sanford national attention until he lost a court battle.

Sawyer said Monday the governor told staffers late last week where he was going to be.

"Before leaving last week, he let staff know his whereabouts and that he'd be difficult to reach," Sawyer said in a interview with The State.

Why is this such a big deal?  So the guy has gone out of pocket for awhile.  Supposedly he does this fairly often.

Is it even safe to go into the wilderness alone, never mind without people knowing where you are? Could we end up with a search party combing the southern section of the appalachian trail for a week to find the SC governor who broke his ankle.

What as soon as you become Governor of a State you cannot just wander off and go hiking for a week or so?

You can go off hiking for a week, but you need to be reachable somehow.  What if the legislature decided to secede again, for Crissakes?  You never know with those South Carolinians

Correct.  As a governor, you have responsibilities.  You cannot just wander off (though I don't believe for a second that the announced story is true, and wonder just what Sanford was really up to).

It probably isn't coincidental that he disappeared right after the SC legislature overrode all 10 of his vetoes (one of them 144-7!).

According to Wikipedia, he should be used to that by now:

Sanford sometimes had a contentious relationship with the South Carolina General Assembly, even though it is controlled by his party. The Republican-led SC House of Representatives overrode 105 of Sanford's 106 budget vetoes on May 26, 2004.[9] The following day, Sanford brought live pigs into the House chamber as a visual protest against "pork projects".

Of course it is.  The question is, should he have done this?  Given that he's the chief executive of a government, and has all kinds of responsibilities, clearly the answer is:  No.

Anywhere in the eastern US however...

I know it passes through the Smokies, and if it continues down that corridor it would not pass within South Carolina.

I think that governors are allowed to leave their states. The article said the last trace of him was a cell phone signal near Atlanta, so he was probably going through the part of the trail in the Turner Field region.

I'm thinking your definition of "wilderness" is a bit different from Dudley Do-right's ;)

And FWIW, I'd say there's relatively little wilderness east of the Rocky Mountains.

I guess it depends on how you'd define 'wilderness'.  There is almost no 'untouched wilderness', yes, but there are plenty of large tracts where little to no humans live, such as in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Daniel Boone National Forest, the Everglades, etc.  To me those all count as wilderness.

Anyway, I didn't take that pic, but I have plenty of pics from Kentucky and Tennessee that show vast forests practically untouched by man.  None of them are primeval forest, to be sure, but I mean human intrusion is very minimal these days.

I've been to Big South Fork National Recreation Area, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the Boone National Forest, among others.

Of course, you might also be able to argue that Mammoth Cave is a true wilderness of sorts. ^_^

To me, wilderness doesn't have to be "untouched", but protected, in that motor vehicles are prohibited, there are significant trees, wildlife, etc.

Not "wilderness" except in its loosest definition. :contract:

Wilderness imples the unchecked growth of vegetation (that's the "wild" part).

Not a natural wilderness, for sure, but it can still be a wilderness.

If it is managed, then it isn't a wilderness.  I think we would agree that parks cannot be really called a wilderness.

Depends on the park.

We have several National Parks that are thereby protected against any development but are otherwise uncontrolled - and indeed are indistinguishable from the surrounding unprotected areas.

I always thought of true "wilderness" being more or less like what we call Crown Land - that is, land not actually owned or managed by anyone, other than a handful of fire rangers and the like.

Not "wilderness" except in its loosest definition. :contract:

Wilderness imples the unchecked growth of vegetation (that's the "wild" part).
wil·der·ness (wldr-ns)
n.
1. An unsettled, uncultivated region left in its natural condition, especially:
2. Something characterized by bewildering vastness, perilousness, or unchecked profusion: the wilderness of the city; the wilderness of counterespionage; a wilderness of voices.

I think we can agree that it's certainly unsettled and uncultivated, although its natural condition may be up for debate.  What he said was technically correct.  Moreover, as the high mountain top shown on the picture is surrounded by a lower, densely vegetated area, I think it would still fit into your more narrow definition.

QuoteSanford met in Atlanta after returning from South America
Governor says he never hiked Appalachian Trail; says he cruised along the coast of Buenos Aires to unwind after stressful legislative session

By GINA SMITH - [email protected]

ATLANTA -- Gov. Mark Sanford arrived in the Hartsville-Jackson International Airport this morning, having wrapped up a seven-day visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina, he said. Sanford said he had not been hiking along the Appalachian Trail, as his staff said in a Tuesday statement to the media.

Sanford's whereabouts had been unknown since Thursday, and the mystery surrounding his absence fueled speculation about where he had been and who's in charge in his absence. His emergence Wednesday ended the mystery.

Sanford, in an exclusive interview with The State Media Company, said he decided at the last minute to go to the South American country to recharge after a difficult legislative session in which he battled with lawmakers over how to spend federal stimulus money.

Accounts of Gov. Mark Sanford's four-day walkabout from his public duties remain unclear and, in some instances, contradictory. A look at what is known and how accounts by Sanford's staff have changed as word of his mystery trip became known and public officials became alarmed:

Thursday

Sanford leaves the Governor's Mansion in a black State Law Enforcement Division Suburban assigned to his security detail. A precise time is unavailable.

A mobile telephone tower in Atlanta near Hartsfield airport picks up a signal from Sanford's phone. It is the last signal before his phones are turned off for days.

Friday

Law enforcement officials get no response to phone and text messages sent to Sanford.

Saturday

The governor's office reports to police that there is no reason for concern but provides no details.

State Sen. Jake Knotts, R-Lexington, calls SLED chief Reggie Lloyd about rumors that no one knows where Sanford is and no one can reach him. Lloyd confirms that Sanford's whereabouts are known

Sunday

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer learns Sanford's whereabouts are unknown.

Monday

Monday morning — Reporters hear rumors that Sanford's location is a mystery.

2:30 p.m. Knotts issues a statement raising questions about Sanford's absence, asking who is in charge of the executive branch of S.C. government.

2:40 p.m. The State newspaper posts an online article saying Sanford has been out of reach for four days.

2:50 p.m. The governor's office issues a statement that Sanford "is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle. ... We are not going to discuss the specifics."

3 p.m. The Associated Press reports that first lady Jenny Sanford says she does not know where her husband is, but he is taking time away from their four boys, "to write something." She says she is not worried.

Midafternoon Sanford security officials are told by the governor's office that he is OK. No details are provided.

3:40 p.m. The lieutenant governor's office says Sanford's office says it has spoken to Sanford and knows where he is.

About 5 p.m. Sawyer denies that Sanford staffers told Bauer's office that someone had spoken with the governor.

5 p.m. As media inquiries escalate to include national news outlets, Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer issues another statement. It says in part, "Before leaving last week, (Sanford) let staff know his whereabouts and that he'd be difficult to reach." He declines to elaborate. Sawyer also doesn't know whether Sanford is still in the country.

10:05 p.m. The governor's office issues a statement saying Sanford is hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Staff members do not know where Sanford is on the trail and will not say whether he is hiking with anyone.

Tuesday

9:42 a.m. The governor's office issues a statement saying staffers have spoken with Sanford and he will return to work today.

Sanford said he had considered hiking on the Appalachian Trail, an activity he said he has enjoyed since he was a high school student.

"But I said 'no' I wanted to do something exotic," Sanford said "... It's a great city."

Sanford, in a brief interview in the nation's busiest airport, said he has been to the city twice before, most recently about a year and half ago during a Commerce Department trip.

Sanford said he was alone on the trip. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.

Sanford, who was wearing a blue and white button down shirt and brown denim pants, said he left for Buenos Aires on Thursday night from Columbia International Airport and had originally planned to come back tomorrow.

Media reports said a SLED SUV the governor drove that night was spotted in the airport's parking lot.

The governor said he cut his trip short after his chief of staff, Scott English, told him his trip was gaining a lot of media attention and he needed to come back.

When asked why his staff said he was on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford replied, "I don't know."

Sanford later said "in fairness to his staff," he had told them he might go hiking on the Appalachian Trial.

Sanford said he decided not to return via the Columbia airport to avoid the media. The State Media Company was the only media who greeted Sanford this morning.

"I don't know how this thing got blown out of proportion," Sanford said.

Sanford said he has taken adventure trips for years to unwind. He has visited such places as the coast of Turkey, the Greek Isles and South America. He was with friends sometimes and sometimes by himself.

"I would get out of the bubble I am in." Sanford said.

Sanford said the legislative session was a difficult one for him, particularly losing the fight over whether he should accept stimulus $700 million in stimulus money he wanted lawmakers to spend on debt instead of urgent budget needs.

"It was a long session and I needed a break," Sanford said.

After a brief conversation with a reporter, Sanford was escorted away by an aide.

Yeah, right.  You went to Buenos Aires for an innocent vacation and didn't take your wife?  Have fun sleeping on the couch for the next month, douche.

QuoteSouth Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, whose mysterious disappearance last Thursday prompted national headlines, acknowledged this afternoon that he had an extramarital affair.

"I've been unfaithful to my wife, and I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina," he said.

Sanford said he would resign as chair of the Republican Governor's Association.

In this case, really bad at getting caught. The governor of a state disappears and he is found out by people asking where he is? So far this hasn't taken a lot of detective work.

QuoteFrom Gov. Sanford,
Date: Thursday, July 10, 2008, 12:24 a.m.

"One, tomorrow leave at 5 a.m. for New York and meetings. Will think about you on its streets and wish I was going to be there later in the month when you are there. Tomorrow night back to Philadelphia for the start of the National Governor's Conference through the weekend. Back to Columbia for Tuesday and then on Wednesday, as I think I had told you, taking the family to China, Tibet, Nepal, India, Thailand and then back through Hong Kong on world wind tour. Few days home then to Bahamas for 5 days on a friend's boat for the last break of the summer. The following weekend have been asked to spend it out in Aspen, Colorado with McCain - which has kicked up the whole VP talk all over again in the press back home ...

Two, mutual feelings .... You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night's light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details ...

Three and finally, while all the things above are all too true - at the same time we are in a hopelessly - or as you put it impossible - or how about combine and simply say hopelessly impossible situation of love. How in the world this lightening strike snuck up on us I am still not quite sure. As I have said to you before I certainly had a special feeling about you from the first time we met, but these feelings were contained and I genuinely enjoyed our special friendship and the comparing of all too many personal notes ...

Lastly I also suspect I feel a little vulnerable because this is ground I have never certainly never covered before - so if you have pearls of wisdom on how we figure all this out please let me know... In the meantime please sleep soundly knowing that despite the best efforts of my head my heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul."

So here's my theory. The Lt Gov and the Gov don't like each other much. Gov's wife endorsed Lt Gov's opponent in  the last primary race I heard. The relationship has been not close. Lt Gov finds out Gov isn't gonna be hiking the 'Trail and decides it's his moment to backstab. He pretends to freak out because he can't reach the Gov while he's away, probably knowing he isn't where he says he was going to be. Chief of staff tried to cover for Gov, but fails because Lt Gov came out with that statement saying Mrs. Gov didn't know where he was. Possibly Lt Gov contacted her before that statement came out. I bet he loved that call. Everything gets blown open and Gov will be ruined, Lt Gov takes over as First Man in Columbia.

If she's a female executive for that sort of business, there's no question she's hot.  It's a job requirement.

Our own governor weighs in:

QuoteGranholm says S.C. governor's actions concern her
ASSOCIATED PRESS • June 25, 2009

LANSING — Michigan's governor says she's concerned about South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's decision to take a trip abroad without alerting those responsible in his absence.

She told MSNBC on Wednesday that it's a given a governor must "make sure that the line of authority is established when you leave the state."

Sanford, a Republican, returned Wednesday to South Carolina and told a newspaper he'd been in Argentina. His staff had said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. Sanford said he had considered hiking the trail but changed his mind.

At a tearful news conference Wednesday, Sanford admitted to an affair with a woman from Argentina.

Granholm, a Democrat, says she likes Sanford but was concerned he was out of touch for days without letting most officials, including the lieutenant governor, know his whereabouts.

Granholm made the comments before Sanford revealed the affair.

I don't see why she is concerned by this.  No one would be worried if Jenny disappeared for good.

Half of South Carolina says that Sanford should resign.

QuoteHalf of South Carolina residents say GOP Gov. Mark Sanford, who admitted to an extramarital affair on Wednesday, should resign from office, according to a new InsiderAdvantage poll.

The survey, conducted just hours after the governor's emotional press conference at the statehouse, found 50 percent of South Carolina voters want him to resign while 42 percent said he should remain in office. Another 8 percent had no opinion.

Voters were nearly evenly split on the question of whether Sanford, who left the state for five days to visit his mistress in Argentina but deceived his staff and the public about his whereabouts, should face impeachment by the state legislature. Although 45 percent supported impeachment, another 46 percent were opposed. Nine percent had no opinion.

But even after acknowledging the year-long affair, Sanford, who until recently had been widely seen as a potential GOP presidential contender in 2012, still enjoyed a relatively high job approval rating. The automated poll found that 47 percent of South Carolina voters approved of his job performance while 45 percent disapproved.

That's slightly lower than his ratings from one day ago – before his tearful confession – when a separate InsiderAdvantage poll showed the two-term governor holding onto a 53 percent job performance approval rating compared with 44 percent who disapproved.

The poll, conducted Wednesday evening, surveyed 926 registered voters and has a 3.2 percent margin of error.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's mistress is a 43-year-old employee of an international agriculture company who speaks several languages and lives in an upscale apartment building in Buenos Aires, Argentina, local media there are reporting.

Though details are sparse, Terra Noticias reported Thursday that the woman's name is Maria Belen Shapur and she works for the international agribusiness firm Bunge y Born.

The newspaper, along with Buenos Aires Continental Radio, reported that she lives next to the Buenos Aires Zoo in a 14-story building. A witness who works in the building described her as a beautiful brunette with big eyes who plays tennis on a nearby lawn and runs every morning in her neighborhood.

The witness told the radio station that Sanford arrived at the complex, alone, with a small sports bag last week and asked to go inside the building.

Sanford admitted Wednesday to having an affair over the last year and covering up a secret trip to visit his mistress last week. The admission rocked the South Carolina political scene and has also captured the attention of the Buenos Aires media, as the governor provided few details about his lover.

Terra Noticias reported that Belen speaks English, Portuguese and Chinese, and that the company she supposedly works for is massive, with 25,000 employees in more than 30 countries, including 1,000 in Argentina, according to a profile on the Bunge Limited Web site.

Given the nature of the emails he wrote to her, he's either a) an incredibly manipulative person, or b) truly in love with her (hell, he could well be both a) and b)).

If the answer is b), the only proper thing for him to do is formally leave his wife, stop pretending to want to reconcile with her, and get with the hot Latina who he is deeply in love with.  I would actually deeply respect him for doing that, though he's still a douche who should resign immediately.

I think we all know he is NOT going to do this, though.

QuoteThe best way to put it: He's trying to kill spirit. All this hope and change, he's trying to kill it .... This Sanford buisness, I gotta tell you, one of the first thoughts that crossed my mind ... What he did defies logic. This is more than being 180 degrees out of phase because of lust or love ... This is almost like, "I don't give a damn, the country's going to Hell in a handbasket, I just want out of here." He had just tried to fight the stimulus money coming to South Carolina. He didn't want any part of it; he lost the battle. He said, 'What the hell. I mean, the federal government's taking over -- what the hell, I want to enjoy life."

QuoteThe Fix: Sanford Admits To More Contact With Mistress

By Chris Cillizza
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, June 30, 2009; 1:15 PM

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's admission to the Associated Press today that he had five encounters with his Argentine mistress over the course of a single year including two overnight stays in New York isn't likely to fundamentally alter the resignation sweepstakes currently swirling around him.

Sanford had previously said that he had spent time with Maria Belen Chapur on four occasions over the past year and had not said that any of the encounters were in the United States.

While Sanford's latest admission is sure to keep the story churning in the state media and, to a lesser extent, the national media, it's hard to see how five meetings rather than four with his mistress will further imperil Sanford's chances of hanging on for his last 18 months in office.

For one, Sanford has acknowledged publicly that he weighed resigning in the immediate aftermath of the scandal but decided against it -- meaning that he isn't all that likely to re-weigh the possibility of resigning.

In an email to supporters yesterday, Sanford wrote that "I would ultimately be a better person and of more service in whatever doors God opened next in life if I stuck around to learn lessons rather than running and hiding down at the farm."

For another, there are considerable political repercussions on the 2010 governors race if Sanford steps aside.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer (R), who is running for the open seat, would ascend to the governorship -- handing him a major leg-up in next year's primary fight. (Bauer's pledge that he would not run for a full term in 2010 if he became governor before then was greeted with a collective eye roll by consultants aligned with other candidates in the race.)

None of Bauer's 2010 opponents want to see him move up to the governor's office any time soon (or ever) and their desire for the status quo winds up strengthening Sanford's hand.

What could change that calculus? If other major revelations -- more affairs, further misuse of state funds, etc. -- emerge that turn public opinion overwhelmingly against Sanford. Politicians are, at heart, survivors, and if the sentiment for Sanford's resignation grew considerably, they would likely have no choice but to push him out.

It's not genetic, it's lifestyle-related.  If Argentine women weren't so fixated on staying thin at all costs, they'd age a lot better.
If only all people were like the Argentine people :(

I think the implication is that he needs to stay in SC and keep not governing and embarassing everyone because it's important for him personally, for his 'personal and spiritual growth' or some such nonsense.

It's impossible not to embarass them.  It's South Carolina.  Just being there is humiliating.

Romney, Palin, Huckabee, Pawlenty, Crist, Jindal. Not bad. And plenty to arise from the shadows. Giuliani will probably go for NY Governor 2010. Jeb Bush 2016.

Doomsday attitude about Republicans is silly. Reminds me of 2004 after Bush was re-elected, and everybody cried that the Dems were dead.

If Sarah Palin is one of your serious contenders, then you are doomed. And I say this as somebody who thinks the GOP has a pretty good shot at 2012.

I disagree about Palin, I just don't see it.  Everyone gets caught up in hysteria late in the election cycle and is willing to overlook even major shortcomings in their politicians.  However, elections are over now, and Republican post-election insanity has to abate eventually.  Would Palin stand up to the scrutiny after having already started in the hole?  I very much doubt it.

Palin is a sharp and charismatic politician with a lot of potential. She just needed time to study, retool, and age.

Same with Hillary Clinton. She should spend these eight years changing into a kindly old grandma. People love to vote for grandmas. I strongly believe that the arrangement with Obama was that he will support her bid in 2016, especially since Biden (being too old) will not be a contender form the Dem nomination.

Check out the much loved Republican Governor of Connecticut, Jodi Rell:

If we assume that the Republican candidate pool is Romney, Huck, Palin, Jindal, Crist, and Pawlenty: Romney and Pawlenty are the only two I can actually envision as President, though predictably they're the two who would likely have the most trouble in the GOP primaries.

Of course, this is all probably a total waste of time, since if in 2005 someone said "I see Barack Obama as the next President", everyone would have laughed.

Yes, Money, I do remember you started a speculative thread on Obama here several years before the 2008 election. ^_^
