It's back! Full with a bearded lady, horrible music and overdone stage settings. This year it's in Copenhagen, but fret not, Danes know how to go over budget too.
This year's songs: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmWYEDTNOGUJpNOiYf0F-yA4wCVV59Iqq

3. Estland: Tanja – Amazing
4. Sverige: Sanna Nielsen – Undo
5. Island: Pollapönk – No Prejudice
6. Albanien: Hersi – One Night's Anger
7. Rusland: Tolmachevy Sisters – Shine
8. Aserbajdsjan: Dilara Kazimova – Start A Fire
9. Ukraine: Maria Yaremchuk – Tick-Tock

14. Holland: The Common Linnets – Calm After The Storm
15. Montenegro: Sergej Cetkovic – Moj Svijet
16. Ungarn: András Kállay-Saunders – Running
Armenia's song was horrible, and it's the bookmaker's favourite. Eurovision as I know it.
Latvia. :bleeding:
I'll just let this thread die now.
Initial evaluation of the quality of this year's slavic ass? That's my main draw for the show.
Sounds like the Polish song was written with you in mind. :D
Double on slavic ass now. Apparently the tv director on russian tv had their finals postponed and then cancelled and just picked these twins. I applaud him.
I think one has implants and one doesn't.
Russian wholesomeness?

I'm rooting for the Ukrainian chick, not afraid to show a little skin. Thank you western decadence.
All the slavs we've seen so far can fit inside that Belgian.
Portugal gets the award for least original song, but also smallest dress... so that's something.
This thread would be a hundred times better if you posted an appropriate picture with each of the comments.
Holland, cute song cute girl.

Montenegro's song could not be more Balkan.
Russia was booed when it was unveil as having qualified for the main show.

Eurovision used to be a major thread around here, now it is Liep talking to himself with a handful of other posters asking pervy questions and for pics of slavic girls.

In the past it was a bunch of Euro posters saying how stupid Eurovision is and how nobody but Eastern European yokels care about it.

So who won? Who was cheated? Who humiliated themselves? What are the political implications? Where Russia or THE Ukraine there, and if so, how did they do? Was there any unexpected voting? Who were there any really hot women that we need to check out (and if so, pics or link please)?
An Ukraine seems to be a lock to win, based on what I saw*.

So Ukraine wins? I guess that means next year the contest will be hosted by Russia.
Finals are not until saturday. I'll be working then so this'll be completely dead unless Syt is just too drawn in by the HOTT Austrian participant.

It's the Eurovision Song Contest. In the 50s when it started it was pretty novel for a simultaneous broadcast across Europe, so Eurovision. It's music so 'song'.
I'll be watching :)
I've stopped following it, since it went from a format where you would often have some funny/outlandish acts to just bland pop in the last few years. We used to have a get together with friends where we'd watch it to poke fun, but we couldn't even be bothered to do that the last two years.

Despite her unusual exterior, Conchita Wurst can actually sing rather well. I was a bit surprised by it, because I figured her to be a mere comedy act. But no, not gonna watch.
I'm not sure I'm willing to drink what it takes to be able to sit down and watch the whole thing.
Might have a glass or 2 of wine and catch snippets of it plus the voting.
Austria used to have a snarky (and politically highly incorrect) commentator duo offering an alternative commentary to the "normal" one, which was really awesome. They're not doing that any more, though. :(
Every year, I am amazed that show keeps going on.
Celine Dion won in 1988, there is no need to have any more competition.
The Ukrainian broad is very easy on the eyes but her song is pure Elevator.

Congratulations, you have understood how Eurovision works.
I just realized that it's been 10 years since Ruslana won. Now her song was really genius; you actually didn't have any lyrics to distract you from the music. She just "la-la-la"'d for a couple of minutes to an energetic music.
Also, Ruslana was hot.
I miss the days when someone like Verka Serduchka would compete for Ukraine. :(

Eurovision is one of those things marking my time toward death. I have no anticipation for it, obviously don't watch it, don't know when it should be coming. All I know is that every once in a while a thread pops up "Eurovision" and that means a year has passed since the last one, and the number of Eurovisions I have left to live through has reduced by one.
Here's Bosnia-Herzegovina's entry from 2009. It's one of the few Eurovision songs from recent years I actually remember and like (there's many more memorable and actually relatively well known songs from the 60s and 70s).
Ide may appreciate the video for its Soviet/revolutionary aesthetic. ;)

And the butter churning girl on the right is.. a little to visual with that stick.

Do we know this for sure? I mean generally the US does not like music in foreign languages that much.
I mean the only Korean song I have ever heard is Gangnam Style but supposedly they have a ton of pop music. None of it might be good granted but how would I know?

I think you're neglecting the national music scene in each country. Most of the time a Danish act is topping the pop charts here, they'll likely never be more than known in Denmark (exceptions, of course: Volbeat, Aqua) or if they strike big, Germany.
Doesn't mean it's not quality pop, it's just not suited for America.
Quote from: Valmy on May 10, 2014, 11:35:28 AMDo we know this for sure? I mean generally the US does not like music in foreign languages that much.
Yep. Language difference matters. Also Europeans are far more into electronic music than Americans. Daft Punk's probably another who count as chart-topping Euro-pop, similarly Giorgio Moroder made the sound of huge amounts of disco - just about every Donna Summers song for example.
Chances are given how big hip hop is in the US and how much electronic music's sampled in that that Americans are listening to more European artists than ever they just don't know it.
Anyway I'm not entirely sure 'pop' exists anymore, I think our culture's so fragmented and individual that it's tough to talk of one pop music. Maybe you'll get the odd global boyband like One Direction but everyone's got their own niche now. J-pop and K-pop may not have cracked America totally, but there are probably millions of fans in the US who are geekily into that genre. So little odd sub-cultures like Northern Soul are now the norm.
There are also lots of acts that rarely leave their home countries, for instance German speaking bands which are rarely known outside of its cultural area. Same with Italians. Their music scenes are vibrant but purely domestic.
So I wonder what happens if the country that wins Eurovision is annexed by this time next year.
Austrian dude looks like the offspring of Prince and Kim Kardashian.

That's nice.
Part of me wanted Russia to win just to see Putin try and host a non-gay Eurovision. A larger part of me was happy a bearded drag act won and, amazingly, won with votes from countries I didn't expect.
It was a bit awkward whenever a country gave Russia points and the whole crowd booed (and when they went to get the votes from Russia and Belarus). I think Graham Norton was right, whenever it cut to the Russian singers, when he said they're only 17 and it's not their fault so it's a bit of a shame.
This will be probably be Britain's entry next year:

Perhaps the focus on boobs is more prevalent on Languish than in the event itself.

I think this year will be hard to top. I remember when lordi won there was some controversy in russia (the runner up) that it was all an anti russian conspiracy. Russia`s problem may be that they think they are european, and thus dont get why the contest doesnt fit into their cultural norms. Such as not really taking it seriously.
Austria was the Anti-Russia vote this year.
Holland had a far better song, but all the sympathy through the anti-Wurst campaign in Russia and through the semi-finals went to Austria (where the Danish producers went all Wurst).
So with this being the Eurovision it was the right winner.

It chimes with these things I posted in the State of Affairs in Russia thread:
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/arts_n_ideas/article/culture-ministry-affirms-russia-is-not-europe/497658.html
QuoteA state commission working on a much-discussed report titled "Foundations of State Cultural Politics" will release their findings in two weeks, presidential advisor Vladimir Tolstoi announced last week, adding that the basic formula of the report could be summarized as "Russia is not Europe."
"Russia should be examined as a unique and distinctive civilization, belonging neither to the 'West' nor the 'East,' Tolstoi said, Nezavisimaya Gazeta reported.
And:
QuoteGENEVA, March 03. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia calls for strengthening and developing the legal base in the field of human rights, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
Russia intends to submit a draft resolution "Judicial System Integrity" to the Council's session and hopes that the document will be supported, Lavrov said.
"We call for taking into account cultural and historic particularities of different people and note the importance of the UNHRC resolution saying deeper understanding and respect of traditional values will help encourage and protect human rights and freedoms," the Russian minister said.
"We hope that the UNHRC will pay attention to all categories of human rights - civil, political, economic, social and cultural," he said.
"Lately supporters of ultra-liberal approaches have stepped up activities. They propagate policy of all-permissiveness and hedonism, saying moral values, which are common for all religions, should be revised. Such actions are destructive for the society and for the generations. Children should be shielded from information that harms their psychology and humiliates dignity," Lavrov said.
"I would like to say the provisions of the International Pact on Civil and Political Rights envision legislative instruments to restrict the rights and freedoms in favor of the population, public security, law and order," the Russian minister added.

Zhirinovsky was on TV (from what I can tell Russian TV was debating Eurovision for 4 hours after the show) saying it's the 'end of Europe'. They no longer have men and women but 'it' and Russia's response to 'dirty Europe' was to send our 'pure girls' who were, inevitably, shunned.
I suppose this is the problem when you have a contest whose strongest enthusiasts are Eastern European homophobes who haven't realised how kitsch everyone else thinks it is, and gays...who have
When someone writes about WW3 no doubt they'll use this Eurovision for the prologue.
