I was going to go to the Pittsburgh game, but it would have meant driving up Saturday afternoon and back Monday morning. Would be a blast but I'm still getting shit for a road trip I took in October.

It'd be nice if the Ravens would beat the Lions this week. I think we can count on the Patriots to beat the Dolphins and give the Ravens a bit of breathing room. That way, it'll all come out to next week, when the Ravens play the Patriots at home for a playoff spot.

They flexed out the Ravens game with the Pats from Sunday night to 4:30. Apparently they feel Chicago and Philly have better playoff mojo with more important demographics for prime time.

I read am article about that flexed game. There can't be a large gap in the number of fleeced games pretty conference. If they left the ravens/patriots game on Sunday night they would have less options for the week 17 Sunday night game.

The Patriots are lucky that they have two division games left. That's pretty much two automatic wins. Even if Baltimore beats the Patriots, the Bengals are going to need to win out and pray to the tiebreaker gods. And the Bengals are going to be lucky if they can beat both Baltimore and Pittsburgh down the stretch. Unless maybe Baltimore wins their next two, in which case they're locked into the sixth seed.

I would find it hard to second guess Troy Aikman. He said Beasley did the right thing when he saw the corner jump the out and turned his out to kind of a curl.
He didn't say that. He said it "wasn't necessarily the wrong thing" because of the GB player there, but that Romo expected him to continue the route.
With 1:00ish on the clock, they need to get OOB. He needed to continue that route.

No, they'll keep him through the season. But I'd say Giovani Bernard lessens his value to the team since he's also a quick scrappy little guy who can catch the ball.

Quote
Article 9
It is a foul if a player initiates unnecessary contact against a player who is in a defenseless
posture.
(a) Players in a defenseless posture are:
(1) A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass;
(2) A receiver attempting to catch a pass; or who has completed a catch and has not had time to
protect himself or has not clearly become a runner. If the receiver/runner is capable of avoiding or
warding off the impending contact of an opponent, he is no longer a defenseless player;
(3) A runner already in the grasp of a tackler and whose forward progress has been stopped;
(4) A kickoff or punt returner attempting to field a kick in the air;
(5) A player on the ground at the end of a play;
(6) A kicker/punter during the kick or during the return;
(7) A quarterback at any time after a change of possession, and
(8) A player who receives a "blindside" block when the blocker is moving toward his own endline and
approaches the opponent from behind or from the side.
(b) Prohibited contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture is:
(1) Forcibly hitting the defenseless player's head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or
shoulder, regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless
player by encircling or grasping him; and
(2) Lowering the head and making forcible contact with the top/crown or forehead/"hairline" parts of
the helmet against any part of the defenseless player's body.
Note: The provisions of (2) do not prohibit incidental contact by the mask or helmet in the course of a
conventional tackle on an opponent.
Penalty: For unnecessary roughness: Loss of 15 yards. The player may be disqualified if the action is
judged by the official(s) to be flagrant.
Garvin should have been flagged and probably ejected. The return should have been called back and the TD taken off the board. Might not have made a difference in the final result of the game, but it's what should have happened.
At this point Garvin should get a fine and Hochuli plus a couple other refs should be downgraded.

Yeah, that sucks pretty bad. Huber is a great guy who grew up in Cincy & went to UC & was having probably his best year. Also a little unsettling that they had him walking upright off the field with a cracked vertebrae.
Don't worry, there will be a fine come Tuesday. How is anyone surprised that the Steelers are only punished after the game ends with monetary concessions demanded? It's been going on for years and probably will continue to do so. They don't get the game breaking or changing penalties against them, nor loss of draft picks, nor suspensions, just fines. Fines which are a total joke compared to the other alternatives.

Related to that, is the Steelers' official explanation (i.e., that Tomlin was truly unaware that he was interfering with the play and only smiled afterwards because the players were teasing him) being widely accepted now? Because Collinsworth and Michaels were stating it last night as if it were fact.
I don't buy it, and I'm not a Steelers hataholic. There's no way a head coach casually strolls the field with his back to a play, let alone a big play.
I just read an article on the playoff picture at this point, with the Bungles loss last night the Dolphins get the last Wild Card spot if they win their last two, period. No matter what happens, one of the Ravens or Bungles would be out at that point.

Yep. If the Dolphins win out, they're in. If the Ravens win out, they're in. If the Bengals win out, they're in.

No kidding; I mean, even if you prefer watching it on the big board, you're intuitively going to be watching from the direction facing the action, if only to avoid getting slaughtered from a hit out of bounds.
And the smirk didn't help him.

Careful, BA. Talk like that, and Languish will get you lumped in with the tin foil brigade, commanded by me.

That's for the PI that wasn't called before the half and they gave a 15 yard helmet contact call instead. Even Stevens, Chuckie.
Yeah, that's kind of how I felt. Missed call takes four points off the board, payback for the end of the first half.
Folks were ready to run Jimmy Smith out of town last year. Now he's erasing one of the best receivers of all time. Good for him.
You know, now that I think about it, I haven't seen this many white people in Detroit since the 1980 Republican National Convention.

No shit. On that pass intereference call they had a whole segment about how the Ravens and refs were in cahoots, and then Flacco gets nailed, and you get a throwaway quote.
Holy fuck.
Way to fucking choke, Stafford.
Tucker was unstoppable, though. Had my doubts on that last one but he got it good enough.
Tucker was insane, but you know who I have mega-respect for? Ray Rice. He's got the TD on that last play, but he goes down for the team so they can run the clock. Here's a guy who has hardly broken any big runs and hardly scored this year, and he makes a team play like that? What a mensch.
And Matt Elam with the last pick. His ass cashes the cheques his mouth writes.
And that's why the Ravens are the Ravens, and the Lions are the Lions.
Detroit has all the talent in the world, they need to learn how to win games like this.

Yeah, heady play; not only unselfish, but he knew not to give the Lions any time at all.
I think Schwarz is going to catch shit for leaving all 3 timeouts on the board after that play; the fans don't appreciate the appearance of giving up, even if the cause was lost.
I was really surprised Detroit abandoned the run so quickly after the success in the 1st half. Stafford is a slinger, but it's unnecessary to throw the ball that often when you're keeping things tight and wearing down the opponent with the run, which they were doing well into the 2nd quarter even if the scoreboard didn't reflect it at the time.

http://www.pittsburghsportingnews.com/why-ill-never-attend-another-nfl-game/
QuoteOver the past few years, the NFL has been the ultimate hypocritical league in professional sports in a number of different areas. The first and most discussed one is the whole player safety issue, which the league says it cares so much about. That topic is for another day, but really? You want to add additional games, add Thursday night games and have a team in London, but you're concerned about player safety?
Oh.
But getting back on track here, the other way the league is hypocritical is the way that it markets its games. Lately, whether its the weather or other circumstances keeping fans away, Pittsburgh Steelers home games have been rather, dare I say, empty? The ticket sales are still there, but the fans aren't. As long as the sales are there, the game won't be blacked out. That's where the NFL tries to use its leverage with fans. Fans have to sellout the game in order for it to be broadcasted.
But you know what's funny? When watching an NFL game, how many commercials do you see for the Red Zone channel or NFL players endorsing a big television? The commercials will let you, the fan, know that from the comfort of your own house, you can enjoy the action as if you were at the game. Now that there really makes me want to sit in the freezing cold with one view of the game.
Now I get it, it's about the experience. Being surrounded by 60,000 other fans taking in a football game is a cool experience.....except when it isn't.
And that very reason right there, is why I'll never attend a football game again unless I'm covering it for work.
Pittsburgh fans are a passionate, loyal bunch. They win together, lose together and want to fire every coach when their team doesn't win. But from an outsider's perspective, they really aren't that bad.
When I was young, I headed to Heinz Field with my dad and stepmom to watch the Lions and Steelers. I've been a huge Oregon Ducks fan since I was a kid, and was excited to see Joey Harrington live, in person. I had my No. 3 jersey on and expected to receive some verbal abuse, despite being 13 or so.
At halftime, my dad and stepmom get up to get some hot chocolate. As soon as they walked down the steps, I have a beer thrown on me. Yes, a 13-year-old kid is soaked from a beer because of the jersey I had on. Accident? Maybe, except for hearing "Lions suck" as it struck me.
No big deal. Crossing the line, yes, but no big deal.
Then you have a trip that my father and I made to Philadelphia to watch the Raiders take on the Eagles. As a big Raiders fan, my dad tried to make it to any game within a five-hour trip to see them play. When we got to the stadium, he had an Eagles mock-turtleneck on, with a Brian Dawkins jersey. He just looked at me and said that he's a lot of things, but he's not stupid enough to wear a Raiders jersey in Philadelphia.
Good call, Dad.
The Eagles fan base had a Randy Moss jersey on fire in the parking lot, and surrounded a Raiders fan in the stadium, throwing out threats left and right. The security guard came over and kicked the Raiders fan out, not the Eagles fans.
And lastly, I went to Cleveland with some friends to watch the Steelers take on the Browns. You remember that game, right? It was the only game Ben Roethlisberger lost in Cleveland, and it was negative degrees out. My friend Melissa had on a Hines Ward jersey, and despite her small frame, she had Browns fans getting in her face screaming at her.
All because of a game.
All because of a team we decide to root for.
Aren't games supposed to be fun?
Lately, all you hear about are the tragic events that come from games. Last week, there were up to four people stab following a game in Denver. The week before that, there was a death in the parking lot after a game in Kansas City.
These aren't the only cases. Not at all.
After a Thanksgiving game against the Oakland Raiders, a Cowboys fan was beaten unconscious.
And you want me to go to games where the fans are like this? Some experience.
Again, not all fans are like this, and Steelers fans haven't been involved, to my knowledge, in something like this in the confines of Heinz Field or the parking lot.
When I have children, it's going to be hard to tell them that we can't go to a game because the fans are like savages. Sure, the opposition may have said something to instigate the fight, but does that warrant being knocked unconscious?
You don't hear about these things happening in the NHL, NBA and outside of the Bay Area, the MLB.
Each Sunday, I'll sit at home on my warm couch, watch football and know at the end of the day, I'll be safe and won't have to deal with the issues that going to an NFL game presents.
TLDR: Fans in stadiums are stupid, raving mad idiots, and you're far better off watching the NFL from home.
TLDR: Steelers fans are the classiest bunch out of the misfits that attend live football games. As reported by The Pittsburgh Sporting News.

I have never been to a NFL game :(
A couple times in the 80s and early 90s we looked into getting Cowboys-Redskins tickets but each time the prices were over $200.00 a ticket which is a lot now but was outrageous then. I attended quite a few Cowboy scrimmages when they had training camp in Austin though.
I've been to one preseason game.
NFL fans who attend games are a special breed, for sure. I pretty much always wear neutral colors if I'm sitting in the stands at away games. Just not worth the potential hassle. The only place I'd be wary of sitting in the stands under any circumstances is probably Oakland. Colts fans seem to be best behaved.
Only been to two, the one previously mentioned and in '87 when Vikings came to Seattle.
@Valmy, yeah I remember my Dad looking at getting tickets to Super Bowl XVI down at Stanford and the prices being high....of course now that price is about same a regular ticket to games :D
If I hit the lottery, one thing I'd do is go to a game in every NFL stadium. I've seen every team play, but that's just due to the sheer volume of Bengals home games I've attended. Stadium experiences vary widely, and at least for the more established teams there are a lot of cool traditions & whatnot that are best experienced firsthand.

Yeah if you win one of those radio contests. And the $20.00 is for the one beer you will drink.
No, if you just look around out there and maybe aren't too particular about seeing the best teams play you'll find a deal. Stubhub is your friend. Avoid pricey stadium beer-- have a couple after the game. Bring a snack and/or hit a restaurant before or after the game.
A few years ago I was down in Miami for a conference & took the wife with me to spend a few extra days. Just happened to look on Stubhub and we got both our tickets for a Dolphins-Panthers game for like $30 total. I think the TV experience is unmatched. There you have a maestro coordinating 14 cameras to deliver you a Wagnerian opera in real time.
Though I suppose there are folks who go to the stadium and just watch the jumbotron the whole time.

I totally agree. For baseball and hockey. I've actually sworn off any more live football games outside of one day going to watch a Raider game from The Black Hole. I've had seats ranging from mediocre, to 3rd row at the 40 yard line, and they all have come up short in my opinion. They're incredibly expensive, you miss the majority of the live action regardless of where you are, and I just don't think it translates as well as hockey or baseball live.

Well, another football fan who will grow up to threaten opposing fans and maybe stab them. :P
Panthers favored 3 points over Saints for Sunday. That's off by 2 touchdowns; I just don't know which direction.
:D
They're showing Tucker vs. Detroit on the LHN right now. Were they doing this on sportscenter or is this a LHN exclusive?
Hmmm Tucker kicked a 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's FG. If the Ravens had only kicked one from the 1 yard line he could have gotten one in the teens and kicked for the cycle.

He's shot straight to the national spotlight. And no, it's not just LHN: apparently they opened with him on yesterday's 6pm SportsCenter, too.
What's the current record on longest FG?

What's the current record on longest FG?

Yeah, outdoors at Mile High, but Tucker's is the longest in a dome.
Also, an interesting tidbit--
QuoteTucker is the first player in NFL history to kick field goals in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s in the same game.
And how can you not love a guy that gives a shoutout to his fantasy owners afterwards--

Also sings opera, and is fluent in 5 languages. My respect for a UT education has grown exponentially. :P

It was a couple weeks ago, and I only heard about it as an "Oh, by the way" in the day's highlights. Seems like it should have been a bigger deal for someone to break that 63-yard ceiling.
Also, on Loose Cannons last night they were talking about how it's such a problem that there are too many field goals. WTF-- it is called "football". Field goals are an important part of the game-- get over it.
Garvin got a $25,000 fine for the hit on Huber. About what I expected to see.

Just messed up the day, as it was Wednesday. As Speissy says though, a fine was indeed issued. Anyone surprised?
Dude the league fines more for uniform violations than they do for some hits, so no not surprised at all.

If it is a 1pm game, I might watch Andy Dalton retard it up on the TeeVee.
Not looking good for a sellout, so you may be watching the My Little Pony Christmas special at 1:00pm Sunday.

Did you guys hear that the FCC changed the blackout rule? Not sure when it will take effect though.

What is worse, is that he named my team.
He doesn't really believe what he is saying.
It's a clever effort to weaponize and direct the Taint, but the Taint is far too powerful a force to be controlled that way.

That record has been ripe for the picking for a long time.
IMO the only reason it took so long is that in today's offense-centered, pass-happy NFL it is probably rarely optimal to attempt for 3 at that distance.
That's a good point Joan. Almost conceding the 7 if you miss.
Any thoughts on explanations for the current age of super kickers?
I would think that the kickers have gotten stronger just like every other player out there. And the rules protecting them probably haven't hurt either.
Part of it is same reason Olympic records keep getting surpassed.
The other part is that the money in the game is such that it makes sense for strong-legged kids to start dedicating themselves to kicking starting early and focus all their effort into it.

Apparently the FCC issued an opinion or something and can't actually force the NFL to change the rule. Some Democrat politicians are urging the NFL to change it, but even our own leftist Senator Sherrod Brown admits he can't force them to.
They need to use the age old threat of removing the monopoly exemption.

The black out rule is just another indicator about how backwards the NFL is with how they televise games. I just do not get it, every game should be on everywhere in the country. Because they make all their money from ticket sales and not TV! Well they probably did back in 1961 when they passed this rule, which just shows how antiquated and outdated it is.
Having said that I don't see what the FCC has to do with that. If the NFL wants to handicap itself, it can go right ahead. It is not like they need the money or anything.
The owners see the TV money as a given, but the ticket sales aren't an insignificant part of their profits. They're going to be very careful when we're talking about millions of dollars here.
I suspect the biggest incentive is they don't want to diminish the brand by televising empty stadiums.
Possibly. And the stadium crowd does have an effect on team performance. But an NFL gate is eight figures, so we're not talking about chump change either, especially when you factor in concessions.
I'd say ticket revenue (plus concessions & whatnot) is the biggie for many/most owners, as most of it is not subject to revenue-sharing.
Bengals got an extension on the sellout deadline to 4:00pm today. It sounded like they still had 3,000 to sell as of last night, so I have a feeling it won't sell out unless someone steps in & buys a bunch.
Media rights brings in approx. $4.95 billion/yr.
Ticket sales: $1.36 billion
So TV is the biggest slice but the ticket revenue is nothing to sneeze at - over $40 million/team. And for the big franchises like Dallas that can sell ultra-expensive luxury boxes, it is probably considerable more than that.
That's all true. However the blackout policy is based on the outdated and irrational fear owners had during the early days of TV that without the blackouts nobody would attend the games. There is no evidence to support this. They are reducing their TV audiences for no good reason.
I mean the owners freaked out when George Marshall started televising the Redskins games in the South. HE WAS GIVING AWAY THEIR PRODUCT FOR FREE
I have a feeling those corporate suites don't get counted for blackout purposes.

Correct. Only non-premium seats. Also, teams don't have to share any luxury suite revenue. I think it's like a 60/40 home/away split for ticket sales.

The NFL doesn't have any monopoly exemption.
Major League Baseball is exempt from anti-trust legislation. Other sports don't.
Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961.
