Watch the Bengals offense come out & lay an egg after all this hype.  I like it better when they fly under the radar.

Are there no football fans in Miami? I've never seen an NFL stadium that empty.

Miami is a pretty notoriously bad sports town so far as attendance is concerned.

NFL To Add Second Team In Jacksonville (http://www.theonion.com/articles/nfl-to-add-second-team-in-jacksonville,34393/)

QuoteNEW YORK—Citing the overwhelming success of the Jacksonville Jaguars, NFL officials unveiled plans Tuesday to add a second franchise in Jacksonville by the 2017 season. "Over the last 20 years, we've seen that Jacksonville, Florida is a city passionately devoted to professional football," said league commissioner Roger Goodell, adding that he believes the market in Jacksonville can easily sustain one, if not two or three additional NFL teams. "Obviously, the Jaguars have set a very high bar that would be difficult for a second team to surpass, but if the Jacksonville Pythons were to enjoy even a small fraction of the Jaguars' popularity, this would be a worthwhile investment." Officials revealed that to maintain inter-conference balance, the league would also add a team in San Diego, St. Louis, or Tampa Bay.

Yeah, Paul Tagliabue's claim to immortal Hall of Fame immortality and fame: Lose two franchises in the biggest TV market on the west coast in Los Angeles, but plant one in the nation's largest trailer park and watch them remove seats from the stadium to ensure attendance meets the TV blackout threshold.  Pure brilliant business acumen.

This douchebag will go to the Hall of Fame, but Art Modell won't.  Go fig.

I don't remember any other run-ins with you, but I usually only respond with "rage and bitchiness" for a reason. :)

Now I am bringing your post from the other thread over here so we don't have 2 NFL threads going at once.

Quote from: Benedict Arnold on October 31, 2013, 05:26:21 PM
He got arrested after he left the NFL, so it isn't like that was a magic cure-all.  Also, he's still hanging around with his old crew, he's got firearms he likes to use often, he's back in school, but it doesn't seem to be overly serious, and I wouldn't say he admitted shit other than that he fucked up.  I don't see any degree of sorrow or remorse over his actions.  I hope he does turn it around, I just don't see enough legitimate signs from that article.

First I don't think anyone said walking away from football was an immediate magic cure-all.  And unless the article is factually incorrect, which is possible because I haven't fact checked it myself, his last arrest was in April and that is what made him re-prioritize his life which made him realize how unimportant football was.  He retired from the Ravens the next month.

The article makes it clear he has cut ties with almost all of his old crew.

Quote"Then he cut off most of his old crew and family, telling most of them in person that he was starting a new life without them, before vowing never again to set foot in Decatur. And he returned to Tuscaloosa, hoping to turn back the clock."

Oh no, a 24 year old southern male who likes firearms!!  He says he uses them to kill copperheads while fishing.  He is legally allowed to own a firearm.

He is back is school as a very wealthy 24 year old that needs 16 credits to graduate.  You think he is taking 16 hours of 400+ level classes all at once?  The author of the story was following him around on a day he had no classes.  What from the article makes you think he isn't taking school seriously?

Maybe he didn't admit anything, but he seems to have taken ownership of his past mistakes and is trying very hard to not repeat them.

Your response looked like it was from someone who didn't read the article, or just didn't want to believe the guy wasn't a horrible person because his favorite team blew a high draft choice on him.  If either of those are incorrect, then OK.

QuoteThe San Francisco Chronicle will stop using the name "Redskins" for the Washington, D.C., NFL team, managing editor Audrey Cooper confirmed to POLITICO.

"Words are powerful, and so is how we choose to use them," Cooper said in an email. "Our long-standing policy is to not use racial slurs — and make no mistake, 'redskin' is a slur — except in cases where it would be confusing to the reader to write around it. For example, we will use the team name when referring to the controversy surrounding its use."

Cooper said she doubts any regular reader of the Chronicle or website SFGate.com would have noticed the choice to use "Washington" instead of the team name, and that they are choosing to use another word that "accurately describes what we are writing about."

According to reports, the change was announced internally on Oct. 25.

"We are not the first media outlet to make this change, and I know we will not be the last," Cooper said.

The Kansas City Star  and Slate.com have also stopped using the term Redskins to describe the team. NBC sportscaster Bob Costas, conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer and even President Barack Obama have all suggested the team change its name.

Daniel Snyder's the one that's making this whole thing bigger as time goes on.  Between making public declarations about "never" this and "absolutely not" that, and his absolute refusal to meet with Native American and Washington DC leaders on the issue, he's only fueling it, you know.

Sure, he can still be all "never" and "absolutely not", but he can at least go through the motions, listen to the protestations and once it's all said and done after long, hard deliberations and listening to all interested parties and their very valid arguments, I've decided that the legacy of this historic franchise is far too important to lose its identity

But as we all know, The Danny has never had a deft hand when it comes to public relations, between firing secretaries with 30 years' service the moment he buys the team, banning signs at the stadium and suing ticket holders, because The Danny is a snotty and evil little shit that only wishes he could suck Bob Irsay's dick in hell.  He makes for a very poor Al Davis.

They've run him into the ground the last 6 years, and people forget how many miles he ran as a 3 year starter at Rutgers from 2005-2007.

They need to learn to walk before they can run, BA.  Let the Brownies learn the basics first when it comes to winning.

Not that it makes a difference.  The Ravens will continue to fail until they get rid of the zone 'blocking' scheme.  They just don't have the personnel for it.  The defence is non-clutch, but the offence isn't going to win anything no matter what.

True enough.  It'd be quite nice if Cleveland managed to sneak into the playoffs.  They have a pretty soft schedule for the rest of the year, so there's a chance.  I'd bet they'd have at least 2 more wins if they never went with Weeden as the starter this year.

Nope.  They can't run block, they can't open holes, they can't protect Flacco, and they can barely pass block.

It was interesting that over the bye, they sent Juan Castillo up to the booth and gave the reins over to the Andy Moeller, the OL line coach that called the running plays last season.  Apparently that came from Steve Biscotti directly, after the OL collectively made a plea to the coaching staff to go back to last year's schemes.

That's the 2nd time a former coach-friend of Harbaugh's has come in, and had to be moved (Cam Cameron).  I don't believe the next one will be as easy to hire.

Yeah he is truly a special owner.  He thinks he is some sort of genius business man when his entire strategy seems to be raise prices and fire people.

Yes he could, but as you say he is incapable of doing that.  YOu only have to look at how hilariously he bungled Six Flags to see what kind of loser this guy is.  The only positive of him being owner was that he was a massive Skins fanboy who at least loved the team, but even that is coming around to fuck us.

QuoteThe official diagnosis is that Kubiak suffered a TIA, or transient ischemic attack, which occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery for a short time and affects blood flow in the brain.

A TIA involves temporary but reversible loss of function, and doctors tell Rapoport there are no residual effects. A TIA is considered to be a warning that blood flow is not what it should be and can be seen as a precursor for a larger stroke.

QuoteReport: Coaches wanted Incognito to toughen up Martin
Posted by Mike Florio on November 5, 2013, 9:56 PM EST

When Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald visited PFT Live on Tuesday and we discussed the possibility that Dolphins guard Richie Incognito's treatment of tackle Jonathan Martin came at the behest of a coaching staff hoping to make Martin tougher, Salguero predicted that, if that ends up being the case, a lot of people will be fired.

A lot of people apparently will be fired.

According to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Dolphins coaches asked Incognito "to toughen up" Martin after he missed a voluntary workout during the 2013 offseason.  Kelly cites "at least two" unnamed sources.

Per the unnamed sources, Incognito may have taken his orders too far.  Specifically, the sources tell Kelly that the racially-charged voice message from Incognito to Martin came after skipped two days of the team's voluntary OTA program.

"Incognito was encouraged by his coaches to make a call that would 'get [Martin] into the fold,'" Kelly reports.

Regardless of whether Incognito took his orders too far, those who gave the orders will be facing serious consequences, if the report is accurate.  Management-level employees can't pull the rip cord on a reputed nut job and then throw their hands in the air and say "that was an overreaction" when the local enforcer is overly zealous with his methods of enforcement.

Apart from the fact that the report suggests a violation of the rules regarding voluntary workouts, the report indicates that the coaches set in motion the events that resulted in Martin leaving the team due to ongoing harassment by Incognito.  Even though Kelly's report focuses specifically on communications occurring in the offseason, it's quite possible that the effort to toughen up Martin was as extensive as the cinematic effort to "train" PFC William Santiago.

To summarize, one of the biggest messes in recent years is about to get a lot messier.  And if Kelly's report is accurate, more people than Incognito will soon be former employees of the Dolphins.

We should invite Incognito to Languish--he'd fit right in, and he probably won't be welcome very many other places.  And he's likely going to have plenty of time to post, 'cause he's probably gonna be out of work.  Maybe his former coaches can post here too.

And it would be an amusing social experiment to see how Incognito can take it when he's on the receiving end of abuse--we could give him the standard Languish treatment.

QuoteNOVEMBER 5--A Wisconsin man was arrested early today after zapping his wife with a stun gun after winning a bet with her on last night's "Monday Night Football" contest, police report.

According to a criminal complaint, John Grant, a 42-year-old Chicago Bears fan, and his wife Nicole, a Green Bay Packers backer, made a taser wager on the game at Lambeau Field. If the visiting Bears won, the couple agreed, John would be able to tase Nicole for three seconds.

When the Bears prevailed 27-20, Nicole was tased several times while the couple partied at the Sidelines Tap bar in Mayville, a city 50 miles northwest of Milwaukee.

While Nicole told cops that she had not agreed to the tasing, a cell phone video reviewed by officers showed that she was "standing still with her arms up and the male subject applies the Taser to her. In the video, Ms. Grant is seen laughing and it seemed apparent that Ms. Grant had consented."

When asked if the tasing caused pain, Nicole told police, "Hell yeah it hurt." She reported that while the electric device had "been used on the outside of her clothing...it caused burn marks on her buttocks." She declined medical treatment, however.

After John agreed to allow a search of his semi-truck, a cop recovered a taser from a compartment above the windshield. During a police interview, John said that he bought "several Tasers at a truck stop in Virginia," adding that he was unaware that it was illegal to possess the devices in Wisconsin without a permit.

John was arrested for possession of an electric weapon charge, a felony count carrying a maximum six-year prison term (and a fine of up to $10,000). He is scheduled for a December 4 Circuit Court hearing.

Police noted that Nicole and John each consented to Breathalyzer tests. Nicole's blood alcohol level, .155, was nearly twice the .08 legal limit, while John's was a bit lower, at .137. (4 pages)
