Title: Allergies: what are yours?
Post by: CountDeMoney on September 11, 2013, 09:30:59 PM
So we've got a list of medical emergency allergies posted at all First Aid stations at the shelter, listing everybody's allergies in the event of medical necessity;  bee stings, sulfa agents, penicillin, etc.

I had a mild allergic reaction to potassium iodide last year, so in the event of nuclear war or a nuclear power plant meltdown, I could be fucked.  What are yours?  Anything interesting?

Naw, not really.  I am mildly allergic to cottonwoods.  Go figure, I live in a place where they thrive.

My whole life I've had the common ones of pollen and pet dander.

As an adult, I've developed allergies to melons, walnuts and avocados. Thankfully this allergy if nothing more than irritation to my throat so if I drink while eating any of those things (i.e. avocado), all is right as rain.  Similarly the allergies from childhood are beaten back by modern allergy medications.

Not allergic to anything. Used to have a mild reaction to tomatoes when I was a kid, but I grew out of it.

Could that still be dangerous, though?  Like, one day it could go into hyperdrive or something?

I've no idea. It would be very shitty of my body if it decided to have an extreme reaction someday.  Still avocados are too good to give up, so I shan't.

I'm allergic to dust, pollen, and mold.

In short, I'm allergic to Autumn in Illinois.

  Ass.

Although, what does bother me is the potential for developing allergies to cats.  Being around so many on a daily basis, and we've had so many surrenders of cats where families developed allergies to cat dander over time.

Now that would completely break my heart.

There are meds for that. :)

My son, the asthmatic, is highly allergic to cats, and we have three. They've never triggered an attack in him, and he sleeps with them wrapped around his head.

Yeah meds these days are good enough for that. Hell my family had a dog all through my teens.

Oddly, when I spent Labor Day taking care of my mother's boxer, I didn't end up needing to take anything at all.

I have to use a wet cloth to dust. Otherwise, it's just an asthma attack waiting to happen.

We have a damp basement, too. (107 year old house) When I go down to clean that, after about 25-30 minutes I'm in a full-blown asthma attack with swollen throat and eyes.

Most pollens, plus cats and gerbils. I have a cat anyway. Not going to take him to the shelter just for that.

Oh, and raw tomatoes trigger the gag reflex for me. I don't think that's an allergy though.

I have a weird allergy to the skins of several fruits.  Apples, pears, plums... all set my lips on fire.  But only the skin.  If I peel them I'm good as gold.

So I wind up eating a lot of oranges and bananas.

Pollen and cats.  I was a mess every spring in DC.  Thankfully the cats allergy didn't kick in until well into adulthood, so the family cats growing up were no issue.

Not me, but my youngest daughter is highly allergic to a whole range of foods, including egg, every kind of nuts, every exotic fruit including banana and kiwi, chestnuts, fig, tuna fish.

These are the potentially lethal ones, meaning that when she eats some of those foods she develops a systemic reaction that needs a shot of epinephrine to save her life.

Then there's a long list of foods we never tried to give her because we're frightened by potential reactions, like shellfish and mushrooms.

When Carter was around 12 or 13, he was known for being highly overdramatic to get his way. It was never that he didn't like something, it was that it was going to kill him.

Me: "Go outside and play."
C: "I can't. My leg hurts. I think I have a tumor in the muscle. Feel it."
Me: "That's the muscle. Now go play."

One night I was making fish sticks for dinner. They were a regular staple in our diet for years. That night, Carter says, "I can't eat those. I'm allergic."

I rolled my eyes at him and said, "I'm not making a separate meal for you because you've suddenly decided that you don't like fish sticks. Sit down. Eat. And be quiet."

Carter replied, "Fine. If I die, it'll be your fault."

I said, "I can live with that. Go eat."

A few minutes later he comes into the kitchen, half-gagging/half-coughing. He hands me his plate (which has been completely cleaned) and says, "My throat's closing. *cough* I can feel my tongue swelling. *gag*"

I look at him and say, "Open your mouth." He does, and I don't see anything. His mouth is perfectly fine, no swelling, nothing. I said, "If you stop breathing let me know and I'll call an ambulance. In the meantime, go do your homework."

He stormed out of the kitchen declaring that I obviously hated him and didn't care if he died. I rolled my eyes again and finished the dishes.

A few months later, Carter had an asthma attack that was pretty bad. The doctor suggested that we have allergy tests done to find any triggers. When we got the results back, I opened the letter, and then promptly fell into a chair, chalk white.

High and prominent on the list was "Cod Fish". Not just allergic, according to the test, but HIGHLY ALLERGIC, meaning it has the potential to put him in anaphelactic shock. And guess what kind of fish sticks I've always bought?

I have seasonal allergies, pollen and such, spring and late summer for ragweed type stuff. I also have a somewhat odd allergy to many fruits. Pears, peaches, apples, nectarines, some melons. I can eat oranges and bananas, and I can eat the same fruits from a can without an allergice affect. I figure it was the skin of the fruit but I've tried peeling apples and I still get an allergic reaction. Too bad because I used to love all kinds of fruit, had them everyday.

So I eat bananas, blueberries, strawberries, canned fruit of all kinds. Pineapple fresh or canned is ok also. A few other things I can eat but the most common fruits I stay away from. I get itchy eyes, scratchy throat. I used to continue eating the fruits even with the hassle but after a while it wasn't worth the discomfort.

It may sound extreme, but getting shots improved my quality of life by an order of magnitude at that age. The problem is they don't let you do it at home anymore.
