I think it's pretty reasonable he's switched parties in his life just because his collection of views as a whole would make him an ill fit for either party, so why not join whichever one positioned him for election? (Which is what he did.) He's a weird mixture of an authoritarian, neoconservative, progressive capitalist.

It probably helps that, being a mayor and a billionaire, he can tell James Dobson, Grover Nordqvist and the national party to go fuck itself.
