Getting the feeling Raz is coming out of the closet as a Chavez fanboy.  Who'd a'thunk it?

I don't think about much one way or the other.  Why should I?

He's a leftist like yourself.  You should love him.

Ahmadinejad is rightest like yourself, and I don't see you sending him fruit baskets.  So is I Putin I think.

Thing is, Latin America is full of leftists.  I don't really keep track of them.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Chavez is also a Catholic.  I WIN.

True. The US is still fixated on Cuba.

Not really.  We don't pay nearly the attention to them that they pay to us.

Type "Cuba" into Google News search and see how many articles on Cuba were in American media in say, the last six hours.

The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

St. Oscar Romero - SANTO SUBITO!

I never entirely got the hate for Chavez.  I don't think he's anywhere near as bad as many have made out.  He's always been more Putin than Ahmedinejad or Khamenei.

I was unaware that hate for Chavez existed.  I see him as a level 23 anti-American buffoon, useful for comedic relief and to help discredit all anti-Americans and all left-populists by association, and as a level 3 security threat because of his support for Colombian "revolutionaries."

Josephus: how do you trim a Google search to US media only in the last six hours?  First page of a plain vanilla search gives me one media story by the BBC.

Is being more like Putin supposed to be a positive thing?

I remember it peaking around about 2005 when he was being called a great dictator or tyrant.

I don't think his buffoonery discredits anyone but himself.

True, but irrelevant.  A lot of countries fixate on the US.  The US is the most powerful country in the world.  You noticed the guys above you.  You don't care nearly as much as about people below you.  Does anyone here know who the head of state is for Costa Rica off the top of their heads?  What about Chad?

That is a terrible comparison. Venezuela is a member of OPEC located not far from the US, is a medium sized country that was until recently one of the wealthiest parts of South America. I can tell you at a high level what is going on in the major Latin American countries (Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil) but I don't keep up as much with small countries like Costa Rica, Paraguay, or Gautemala.

Also, Chavez has effectively destroyed his country's economy and made life very difficult for multinationals there. He has also tried to create an anti American coalition and shown a willingness to fund countries that take that line. Yeah he is a buffoon and has failed, but sometimes people follow buffoons, and he has had some successes.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

There's a fine line between salvation and drinking poison in the jungle.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

Hmm, I wonder how many of the Massachusetts Congressmembers will be going to the funeral for Chavez to mourn the great socialist liberator! I bet one who might go is Jim McGovern.   ;)

Why don't you tell me.  While you are at it, why did Republicans fixate on Chavez?
Are they really that fixated on him?  They'll mention him scornfully once in a while, but it's not like he doesn't deserve it.
When Dorsey is calling you on your partisan bullshit, it's time to take a minute and think about what you're saying.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

Rest in peaces, Chavez.
