Quote from: Josephus on February 21, 2024, 06:07:43 PMOne of the first things they made us do in high school gym was shower in open showers. Showers after gym class was compulsory. I think the idea was to get us used to male nudity? I remember one guy, we shall call him Gary, used to have a raging hardon

Is that you Gary?

We didn't take showers back in highschool. Probably because they hadn't worked in a decade or so.

Poilievre is doing his bit:

Says David Eby (Premier of BC) "has probably the worst housing record of any politician on Earth".

He also stakes out a strong position on trans issues, saying: "obviously female sports, female change rooms, female bathrooms should be for females, not for biological males".

Looking to Sheilbh to hear how this is playing in UK politics strategy rooms, and to our Canadian posters to hear if they think either of those things move the needle for them or the groups they have insight to.

Personally I think the first line of attack is asinine and obviously a continuation of the "keep repeating someone is shit enough times and people will believe it" playbook. I guess he's using his anti-Trudeau playbook against the politician with the most credible housing strategy to make his own empty "Conservatives will solve the housing crisis via tax cuts for the rich and withholding cash from cities or whatever it is his plan is."

The second point is kind of sickening and shows who will be paying the price for the "fuck Trudeau" sentiment. I guess the Conservative party has decided that picking on trans people GOP-culture-war-style is a winning move for them.

It's a mimic on Trump's attack on just about every politicians.

He's importing the US playbook because it served Trump so well.  It is not unheard of.  Our political parties to have observers to the campaigns down south.

Also, there are polls being made about our reaction to seeing Éric Duhaime making the switch to the Federal Conservative Party.  And he's been making increasingly pro-federalist statements.  While attacking the CAQ for not gaining anything for Quebec by not being sovereignist enough.

Duhaime begain his carreer as a political adviser for the Bloc Québécois and the Parti Québécois.

I've seen a couple of articles referencing Pierre's plans for porn sites recently (requiring users to add ID verification to access adult sites).

That raises a lot of concerns and many (every) Canadian should be concerned about that.  It might be a boon to the magazine industry though.

I was in a city run swimming facility recently and an adult male was standing fully naked drying himself off with the warm air hand blowers in the toilets section of the change room.

There's apparently an intense lobby going on by the biometrics industry.

More state nannyism.

Was there ever any doubt that Duhaime was anything else but an opportunist of the worse kind?

That's also been introduced into law here - and in the EU. In both cases as part of a wider "online safety" push which is a bit of a curate's egg.

I think that practically it's been very, very difficult to implement for the simple reason that people don't trust porn sites to hold copies of their IDs.

It gets less attention here - the wing of conservatives here that are Poilievre-boosters are young, libertarian-ish, centre-right and very, very focused on housing. Basically old school property owning democracy/you don't get conservatives if people don't have anything to conserve - and with reform and focus on what matters to young people (housing), you can win them from the right. I've not really seen him come up much from the more culture war side of the Tory party. Either he's not identified with them or he's not been picked up as their foreign exemplar.

Having said that - I think the Tory politician who will try to emulate him in the inevitable leadership contest after the election is Kemi Badenoch who is very much on the culture war side of things - in part because she's got the equalities brief. She's also, currently, favourite to be next leader. She's a little hemmed in because trans rights are covered by equalities legislation and no-one in the Tory party wants to open up the Equality Act. But she is pushing at the very edges of what she can get away with through "guidance" and other non-legislative tools. She's also spoken about housing (used to be a minister in that department) and her big thing was on the Tories need to stop promising things and not doing them, but actually need to promise what's achievable and deliver. So I think her pitch will actually be to try and merge the strand of Toryism that's very excited with Poilievre, with the culture war-y stuff (and she is reportedly Murdoch's favourite of the possible candidates).

I think she'll be a pretty dreadful leader of the opposition - but they're the Tories so my fear is Labour somehow accidentally conspire to fuck things up so badly she somehow wins the election after next anyway, but I have that fear for any potential Tory leader...(which must be how Canadian Tories must feel about the Liberals)

Funny, never would have taken him for the sex is icky closeted conservative type.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".

Yeah, I think it's a bad idea but it's not something I care deeply about. But it's still not something I'm cool with.

Why would it be a boon to the magazine industry?
