The overarching plot was pretty lame IMO.  I found the standalone "creature of the week" episodes way more satisfying.

The overarching plot was pretty damn great until it dawned on me they had no idea where they were going with it; sort of Lost avant-la-lettre.

The episode about the Roswell autopsies was a favorite of mine.

Heh, I actually avoided Lost because someone told me it reminded them of The X-Files "without all of the standalone episodes".

Yeah, they never had any idea how they were going to pull all this together.  They were just going for "well this would look neat" or "this would be spooky".  Then it it became painfully obvious that they had not written an outline of what they wanted to depict.
