I'm serious. The first act, with the foreshadowing and building up of the aliens is pretty well done. One of my teachers used it as an example of building up tension. He thought the rest of the movie was shit.

Personally, it's a guilty pleasure of mine.

I'm honestly surprised it's not universally loved and celebrated :o

My best memory of watching ID4 was the two dudes that started fighting on the stairs of the theater shortly after the speech scene.

It does possess all the necessary elements, I can see why it's considered textbook;  the same reasons why Thelma & Louise is one of the most perfect scripts of all time, up there with Chinatown and Casablanca
Say what you want about the movie, but it's a structurally sound screenplay.

Another blockbuster that gets trotted out often in film school and in writing manuals is The Matrix. It's probably the most perfect hero's journey script since Star Wars.

I actually liked Wild Wild West. More so than the Independence Day by far.
Independence Day is possibly the greatest film of the nineties.

Agreed.

Independence Day gets a lot of shit for being a kitschy 90s summer blockbuster but it's a damn good movie and always brings a smile to my face whenever I watch it. It's just a fun movie that does what it wants to do really well.
Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV.

Greatest film of the 90s?

You guys are crack heads.  Independence Day is Mars Attack! played straight.

Sort of.  That whole 'computer virus for alien computers' was hard to take seriously.

I agree, don't get the love.  It befuddles me as much as the attention that Blair Witch gets.

Completely.  Every character is a cartoon cutout.  The dialogue is middle school pap.  The 1st lady story is sentimental shmaltz.

It was very well done for what it wanted to be.

I'll agree that "best movie of the 90s" is absolute garbage (how about Pulp Fiction, Silence of the Lambs, The Matrix, Goodfellas, Fargo, Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, Fifth Element - and those are just films I personally like more), but it's still a well done movie.

There's nothing wrong with an unironic movie - hell we get too few of them.

Blair Witch got attention at the time, and in hindsight it did start the whole trend of "shakeycam" and "lost footage" in movies, but does it get any attention whatsoever now except as perhaps being historically important?

Will Smith stars in Independence Day, helping to usher in an era of action movies in which special effects are more important than gratuitous violence/overt homosexuality. Action stars become child-friendly pussies.

From the timeline of '80s action Ruthless guide, I thought this would make you reconsider your position. :)

Unfortunately what it wanted to be was a good looking movie that insulted the intellect.
