I don't think so.  The French Revolution seems a lot less dramatically interesting to me.  There's a lot less contemporary or near-contemporary fiction on it, too.  I was really in to Dostoevsky's Demons as a kid, and the character Pyotr Stepanovich Verkhovensky is one of my favorites in all of literature and I'd argue we've never seen anything like him on prestige television.
A band of young idealistic men changing the world and fucking around (Danton). The stakes get higher as they rise through the chaos until only Robespierre is left pure, but alone. Curtain.

But I think that's more interesting because you fundamentally sympathise with them. Could they have stopped? Could you? When?

I sympathize to a certain degree with the RSDLP, and to a lesser degree on the batshit crazy native brand of Russian socialism that was hybridized with RSDLP's Marxism and became Bolshevism.  They were completely certain of their cause, and the idea of equal conditions and scientific management certainly had an appeal in Imperial Russia.

I find Danton a lot more interesting than Robespierre.  He's a bit boring, really, especially compared to how, well, evil Lenin got eventually.  He wanted the French to be hard-working, middle class proto-Unitarians.  I just don't find that as interesting as Lenin's Vanguard Party, who are allowed-even encouraged-to do any amoral action as long as it benefits the party.

"Dysthymia?  Did they get some student from the University of Chicago with a hard-on for ancient Bactrian cities to name this?  I feel cheated."

That friction of the Chernyshevsky Russian radical type is completely fascinating to me.  He's essentially an Orthodox Monk who must be willing to do any evil in the name of the Revolution.  I just find that more interesting than anything the French revolution produced.

The problem with the Russian Revolution is that, besides the big honchos, nobody but the scholars know the rest of the people and factions involved. With the French Revolution you have name recognition much more easily.

Watched a couple more episodes of Hannibal.

Two thoughts. Hannibal has very nice suits. But some truly awful shirts.

Gillian Anderson is magnificent.

The French Revolution is far better drama, pathos, and story than the Russian Revolution.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.
