In Germany we had audio dramas of He-Man (a popular medium in the 70s and 80s), usually around 45-ish minutes, IIRC?

I had a bunch of them (up till #13 or so; I kinda grew out of them afterwards). They were decent adventure stuff, some better than others. On par with the cartoon, I'd say?

We had those in Spain too. I mean, I don't know if there were the same as the German ones, but there were cassette adventures of He-Man. They came with the action figures.

I might still have some at my parents' house.

We had a studio in Hamburg that did nothing but those audio plays, all written and produced in house, quite a few of them with well known TV actors or dubbing voices. There were various kids' series, mystery series, horror, sci-fi, etc. though my favorites were Perry Rhodan (an adaptation of the first 15 or so issues of the long running pulp series (they're on Ep. 3121 in their weekly book series) and Asterix which I loved listening to while reading the comics. The biggest series is ??? (the Three Question Marks), originally adaptations of the Three Investigator/Jupiter Jones stories: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Investigators#Germany

My friends had them but I never played with dolls.

He-Man sucked. I found it boring when I was a kid (but still got the action figures).

I mean every character had like only 4 different animations. It was a terrible cartoon.

Yeah even in the 80s I thought He-Man was terrible, both the toys and the cartoon (though especially the cartoon).  I know 80s Saturday morning cartoons weren't well animated to begin with, but He-Man seemed even worse than most.

My first ever miniatures game was one I created with my brother which we played using our GI Joes. Every character/vehicle had its move distance and roll tables for each weapon.  :nerd:

(We didn't even know about Warhammer at the time)

The music. Gay anthem.

Oh is it? It is just a 1980s song to me. But hey it is from your....um...collective of countries.

I personally adore "Holding out for a hero" and consider it the epitome of 80s pop cheese, but never really made the association. It's super flamboyant and campy, so it checks those boxes, but never really heard it in the context of gay anthems. :hmm:

i think shrek when i hear that song now

You were already artistically jaded as a kid?

Valmy

I was about to say, damn you guys had much higher standards than I did as a kid in the 1980s

I loved every minute of that cartoon.

It's the greatest "I pretend to listen to it ironically but I secretly dig the hell out of it" song ever.

I had a very weird obsession with He-Man's shitty animation indeed

I thought 80s cartoons were fine; it was the 70s cartoons that were really tough to watch.
