So remaking French shows is more common? That seems... odd.

Than remaking other countries one. I wouldn't say it's common at all. Can't really come up with any example other than Call my agent right now.

I'd have thought that you'd rather remake stuff that isn't in French to begin with, despite the cultural differences between France and Quebec. But OTOH I suppose it makes the adaptation easier.

I nearly worked in the Spanish remake of Married With Children. Which isn't very good.

We've had a couple of Colombian shows being remade into Spanish ones, so yeah, we'd do that here too.

Many other latin american shows, mostly telenovelas, are shown as they are, with no dubbing or subtitles or anything.

This may just be UK-US experience but I feel like comedy tends to get re-made pretty often just because of the cultural difference/way jokes land.

Is Castlevania S4 worthwhile? I like the environments, but the bland characters and endless exposition can get a bit too much.

What other French shows of fiction can you think of? Apart from Appelez mon agent?. I can only think of borrowed formats (L'amour est dans le pré, un souper presque parfait, Tout le monde en parle, la Fureur...) Perhaps Caméra Café? But I think it's also the format, more than the script.

Otherwise, in terms of fiction, I can only think of En thérapie (show from Israel), The Office (a brief, unsuccesful adapt from UK/US), perhaps a police procedural from Sweden?

I think we are plugged in enough to the UK to get their comedy without the remakes. I mean we can appreciate both.

Weirdest one was the Betty la Fea remake, since both the Colombian original and a Mexican remake had already ran in Spain. Yet it was a smash. And eventually we also got the yank version (Ugly Betty).

EDIT: No, I had forgotten about the ill-fated Spanish "Cheers" remake... made 20 years after the original.

That actually sounds very similar to our usual setup over here for "prestige" shows. We've never had actual showrunners, just head writers. I'm pretty used to have the director sit in the writers' room and request rewrites. However, neither us or him enjoy producer status (except for really powerful individuals), that's always reserved for the moneymen. They rule and we obey.

Personally, I believe that for a TV show it's best to have the writer side take the creative lead, these things are much more complex than a movie, and the director should already have a lot on their plate. But I like to have the director involved in the process, having him absorb the nature of the show, give his input, and ensure he's comfortable with the material. You never, never, never should ask a director to shoot a scene he/she doesn't buy. It will always be shit.
