Basically, this man was given a book of Lupin's adventures under circumstances that made them very meaningful for him.

I never understood why people rushed out to hoard toilet paper last year.

I thought it was a new version of the anime, Castle of Cagliostro.

One of Lupin's main antagonist is the Countess of Cagliostro.

Finally got a chance to watch The Dig. I quite enjoyed it, nice moody pictures and music, fine acting by Fiennes as usual.
Not sure I agree with there being a lack of focus on the finds, this is basically what would be seen during the dig.
The restoration to display-quality would have taken years, even without the war getting in the way.

Yes, I wasn't that bothered by a lack of concentration on the finds; overall a very good film.

Also, a fairly faithful recreation of what prewar archaeology must have been like.

I'm not watching it actively but when I go to the living room I occasionally catch my girlfriend watching Junior Bakeoff. I saw a few episodes of the last series of regular Bakeoff.
Its interesting how different the shows are.
In the junior one judge comments are always positive. In the vein of "Oh I love how you can see what it is". The difference in quality is immensely different. Which when its a cute 10 year old making a cake...fair enough. Well done kid.
But...on regular adult bake off I think the winner was 18 or 19?
And on junior bakeoff you also have 15 year olds who are held to the same shitty standards as the 10 year old.
Interesting what a difference a few years make.

I want to see Gordon Ramsey tell a 10-year old that they're a fucking donkey.  :(

He's actually very sweet with the kids, there are compilations on Youtube of him being a darling in the junior edition.

I liked the movie as well, but I definitely would have preferred more about the dig itself. That's just a personal preference though - I'm very interested in archeology, did an undergraduate in that, worked on digs myself, etc.

The movie was fine for what it was. But the Dig in the title was simply the setting for the movie, which was really about the personal relationships among the people on the dig.

Edit: it is perhaps worth pointing out that actual excavations are notorious hot-beds of both gossip-worthy behaviours, and gossip! 😄 The digs I was on were no exception.

They could have cut the pilot and dysfunctional couple storylines and made a better movie.
And I agree it would have been cool to see more of the methods and theories employed at the time.

You cut out the beard subplot and you need a shitload of moody piano music to get to feature length.

I don't know, it didn't add anything and just distracted from the main theme.
There was more to be had from the two protagonists, the wife and the boy perhaps.

I liked it.  The woman's perspective on a sham marriage to a closet gay.  Not an overly common theme in movies or literature I don't think.  Plus I got some fan service.

I didn't think there was anywhere for the two protagonists' relationship to go, unless you throw in a ridiculous Hollywood makeout scene.

Oh no, it definitely shouldn't have gone anywhere, but there could have been a bit more depth to it.

But you're probably right in that it was added to pad it up to feature length.

I didn't see it as padding but part of the mosaic of all the intertwined relationships of those taking part in the dig.   One reviewer said the thing they liked most was how the relationships were all about nuance and suggestions of what happened and what could not happen.  The homosexual relationship is hinted at throughout but never made explicit which was a nice touch for the period this took place.  The only thing I would have changed was the
sex scene with the pilot
as that went outside the theme of suggesting but not showing.  But other than that I found it very enjoyable.

I am also with Malthus, I would have liked to see more description about what they found but I am assuming the creators decided that was a different audience.
