I don't think Cleese said anything remotely objectionable in that article.
Sure. On it its own.
But in the context of him whinging about cancel culture and people being silenced for having the wrong view....

Yes, it is very obvious what sort of format this show will take.

Yeah. I'm surprised by the Languish reaction to this.

Cancel culture should be wiped out.

Cancel culture should be wiped out.

Not surprising from a poster who likened a black actress playing Anne Boelyn to an orangutan playing Jane Seymour.

You just don't understand.  What is objectionable cannot be identified specifically, but Cleese is a boomer* and therefor a monster and everything he says is therefor cringe-worthy.

* He's actually not a boomer, but a member of the Silent Generation, but facts are irrelevant when it comes to trying to smear someone.

Watched "The Chair" last night. It was pretty good, and was basically all about this entire cancel culture thing on campus.

I think it kind of missed though - it presented a bunch of students cancelling a well liked professor for making a "Heil Hitler" joke during a lecture, and worked overtime to try to portray the mob destroying him as something virtuous, instead of just a mob being a mob.

I guess that is what sucks about trying to react to something like this - the people you have to mollify are acting irrationally and with contempt for reason, and yet the only tool you have to deal with them is in fact reason.

His attempt to respond to the mob outrage by pointing out that he is clearly not a Nazi did not go well.

There is a scene where he had scheduled a open house talk on the campus green with the students. And he is there, by himself, surrounded by like 30 of them yelling at him, and one thing they said in response to his saying something like "I am here to talk to this with you as equals" was to point out that he was a published author who right for the Atlantic or something like that, so how could they be equals? I was struck by the fact that in reality, they were not equals at all in that moment - the mob had radically greater power then he did. He could not get them kicked off campus, and they could (and did) most certainly get him fired and destroy his livelihood.

Anyway, it is worth a watch, on Netflix.

It's refreshing to see how ready people are to discuss the topic without immediate assumptions about the validity of the arguments before they even see the show.

Cancel culture isn't a thing.
Its the paranoia about it that needs to be wiped out.

It is a thing and has been for thousands of years. Humans have always done it. Just now we have social media and a better way to do it on a mass level. It used to be you had to have a small community to properly ostracize and socially bully people. Sometimes for good reasons, sometimes not it just depends on the whims of the mob.

I don't know what humans you have been observing your whole life to think that cancel culture is not a thing. Plenty of religions today still have institutionalized shunning FFS.

I guess we can pretend like we don't know anyone involved and pretend like it's a blank slate.

Is there a quote or link to the most damning stuff Cleese has said on cancel culture?
Women want me. Men want to be with me.

Josquius

Valmy and Cancel culture always existing - that's not what is meant when people moan about cancel culture.
What is usually meant there is the idea there's some all powerful leftist force silencing all discenting viewpoints.
It goes far further than saying Islam is dumb and losing your Muslim fanbase.

Interestingly on another board I saw some others jumping to reply in a similar vein that it was funny how triggered some were being and getting angry about a show before it has even aired....
When none of the replies, there or here, have done that.
