Why do Russians today bring out all the courses at once? Is it just to mindfuck people?

Just watched the first episode of It's A Sin, which was excellent.

I think Russell T Davies is the best TV writer in the UK - especially on the LGBT dramas he's allowed to do every five years. He also has a special place in the hearts of a lot of gays my age who remember watching Queer as Folk in our bedrooms with the volume at about 5%.

Queer as Folk was on TV 21 years ago and it was a deliberately joyous take on being gay and the gay community. There was no reference of AIDS, barely any homophobia - there were plenty of shows and movies that had, worthily, explored the darker side. Davies wanted to show the fun. But Davies has now done a show in the 80s - he did a great piece in the Guardian about this:
https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/jan/03/russell-t-davies-i-looked-away-for-years-finally-i-have-put-aids-at-the-centre-of-a-drama

And as with everything I've ever seen that Davies has written - Queer as Folk, Cucumber, A Very English Scandal, The Second Coming, even Dr Who - it is so good at creating fully-formed human characters in about 5 minutes of screentime. Based on the other shows he's done, because the characters are so real there'll be a lot of humour and fun, which will make the pain all the deeper.

I think I'm better prepared for the tragedy that comes in It's A Sin given the forewarning provided by its setting and its marketing. At this point, I think the only thing I recall about Cucumber is the very sudden tragedy that I was unprepared for.

Also, have decide definitely in the olds category as only character I don't find annoying/enjoy is the timid Welshman, oh and maybe the wizened goth woman who was told she was being very rude mentioning a gay flu.
"I've never been quite sure what the point of a eunuch is, if truth be told. It seems to me they're only men with the useful bits cut off."
I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

Yeah - I think Cucumber's not his best but I still remember that episode and the aftermath. But yeah this show will clearly be upsetting - but I did love the way they turned all the continuity announcements on Channel 4 back to the 80s logo and ads like this:

In terms of moving me to the olds, remembering that Channel 4 logo was a moment

 Same - I like Jill too.

Midnight Sky - crikey this is not a good film. Everything can be expected in advance.
Rigjt from the first 10 minutes it ruins it for itself when it starts talking about a previously unknown moon of jupiter that can support life.... Just..... Wut? You could have at least tried to make it somewhat believable with it being something unknown about Ganymede or to further to Titan or another solar system. But no. An entire perfectly earthlike moon we didn't know anything about.
Space walk with a happy moment? Better believe its going to go wrong after. And clearly the black girl is the red shirt.
Basically The Road in spaaaace. And the Arctic. But wrong.

Fear dot com. A murderer streams his work on the world wide net, and the police and department of health join forces to catch him. Meh. The movie doesn't try to make much sense. One of those movies where it's always dark, even in normal office environments. The chicks are hot.

Got to episode 3 of It's A Sin and stopping for the night because it's had me in bits :weep:

Also - All 4 is maybe low-key the best streaming service in the UK :hmm:

It may just be my taste (and it's certainly not the quality because that can be problematic) but looking through their box set section and it is insanely good :o

Re-watched The Karate Kid tonight.  We got into a discussion about old movies being made into television shows.  After deciding that a Karate Kid series was less weird than, say Gremlins, I looked on IMDB and found there is a Gremlins show coming out.

Have you seen the Cobra Kai series?
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

So, Wandavision...I don't have Disney plus, but I hear it's amazing.

Is it as good as they say?

If you dig classic sitcoms...

I'd definitely watch Mandalorian first.

It's not funny and it spends way too much time trying to be to take it seriously as a drama.

I don't think it is trying to be all that funny and episode by episode the serious drama side gets more screen time.

The humour is hyper post modern in laughing at the fact that this kind of cliche was once the height of comedy.
It's entetsining I find even as it is for now, but the story is coming out bit by bit. They'll do the 80s and 90s. Conceivably 00s and 10s though harder to pin down (the office style?) but then they'll have to do something else
