Atomic Blonde (2017)

Did you know, that while Hitchcock invented the term "McGuffin", the concept had existed before in American movies long before; before the movies even went to Hollywood?  In the "Perils of Pauline" (1914 - and shot in the then movie capital of the world, New Jersey) the things being chased after were referred to as "Weenies."  Atomic Blonde is a weenie movie.

;)

The weenie in this film is a watch containing a microfilm list of every spy in Berlin.  The movie is set in 1989 just as the wall was coming down.  While there's nothing you haven't seen before, many times, the film is worth seeing for Charlize Theron's impression of James Bond, if James Bond were a woman and about a ten times cooler.  The hand to hand combat scenes are well done, everyone really looks like they're taking a beating in them.  The soundtrack is pretty cool as well, but hardly believable for 1989 when the charts were dominated by Milli and Vanilli, not new wave.

I must be getting old, as the gratuitous lesbian sex scenes didn't seem to add anything to the movie and the gratuitous French lesbian love interest seemed pointless.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

Well you know how eastern Europe is always a few years behind.

Call Me By Your Name. I thought it was very good, even if the second half dragged a bit. Excellent acting. Believable human interactions. And there's even some candy for heteropervs.

Black Mirror. First episode of series 4. Very very good.
So Black Mirror does space is how it was billed. It looked interesting from the screencaps. A riff on Star Trek. Starts very silly and light hearted but soon it is shown it isn't actually set in space. Instead they're pretty much redoing the idea from that John Hamm christmas special.
Nonetheless it is done very well. Give it a few minutes more and release it at the cinema and it could be one of the top sci fi movies of recent years.
First episode was excellent.   I will watch the rest in the coming days  :)

The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Colin Farrell plays a cardiologist that needs to "attone" for a malpractice that caused the death of a man, by killing one of his own family - otherwise they will all fall sick and die. It looks like the set up for a horror movie, but it's actually a weird and upsetting psychological drama in the vein of the director's previous movies. Despite the premise being very good, I think this one ultimately is far more flat than Lobster or Canine. It doesn't help that the characters are hard to relate to, so you end up not giving a shit about which one dies. Nekkid Nicole Kidman still looks decent at 50.

I've not seen it either.  I think I was a bit old to be in the target demographic (I was 23 and already out of college when it was released).  OTOH, I'm not sure that I would have been interested in seeing it when I was 16 or 12, either.
