What's the difference between a pedophile and a pederast?

And what is Owen Jone's point?

A pedophile doesn't necessarily indulge in sex with minors (he might find other outlets for his impulses, i.e. child porn). A pederast by definition is somebody who has sex with minors.

Oddly enough, while your definition is totally logical, the language isn't.  :D

In English the term "pederast" refers exclusively to the older person in male homosexual relationships between an older male and a younger - but the age of the younger can vary; may be teen-ager, for example.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pederasty

"Pedophile" refers to a person who is sexually attracted to children, could be of either sex (or both). The term implies that the children be pre-pubescent.

So, while it may be the case that a "pederast" isn't committing a criminal act (if the younger partner is over the age of consent - which is possible), a "pedophile" who has sex with their preferred partner is always, without exception, committing a criminal act (at least, in civilized nations).

Ok, in Spanish "pederastia" always involves relations with minors.

Isn't the pederast's partner referred to as a katmai catamite?

I think his point is that it feeds into negative perceptions of homosexuals to combine a response to sexual assault of a 14 year old and a coming out statement as a gay man in the same breath. Him being a gay man has little to do with the sexual assault as being a gay man != lusting after a 14 year old.

So he would have preferred that Spacey stay in the closet after the accusation?

Maybe.

I do think that optics wise it would have been better if he discussed that aspect later so it didn't come off as HVC noted as a distract.

I readily admit the English version doesn't make a damn bit of sense, etymologically.  I mean, the root of both "pedophile" and "pederast" is the Latin for "child" ...

Netflix won't renew House of Cards for a sixth season.  Of course it's possible they weren't going to renew anyways, but I doubt it...

Yeah the timing. On the other hand, based on setup for season 6, there shouldn't be much to tell after that one.

Yeah, to be honest, it sort of ran its course already.

I don't disagree, but I'm not sure what else Spacey could have realistically said.  What was he going to do, lie about it and say, "Hey, I'm not even gay, if I was going to sexually assault a 14-year old, it would have been a 14-year old girl"?

Okay, I haven't watch the last couple of seasons.  But it's a story arc that kind of cries out for a final denouement where Underwood has some kind of final conclusion.  It could be like the British version, where the PM is assassinated by a shooter in the employ of his own wife, or some kind of more subtle ending - but it should have an ending where we find out what happens to the characters.

Don't say anything.  End his statement after the first paragraph.
