I could see what they were vaguely trying for, but it just wasn't working.

Showing the brutal realities of hard life on the streets of Saskatoon?

No.  Trying to tackle issues about race and sex using the Canadian frontier as their canvas.  It was often heavy handed and not helped by a lot of cringe worthy "acting".

Still very much enjoying 'Wolf Hall' and Damien Lewis's portrayal of Henry VIII is revealing itself perhaps brilliantly, I mean I think it'll be a brilliant performance once the full traits and motivations of his Henry are evident.

I'm thinking of getting this on DVD when it comes out.

This was my suspicion exactly - judging purely by the praise some critics have heaped on the show (and the scorn they have heaped on Canadians for not watching it in droves).

You very rarely see good subtle treatment of those topics.

If they tried to tie it into the timeline and setting it would be a lot better, even if not done in an overly subtle manner.  Alas.

Canadian TV:  :yucky:

 Half of the American shows are filmed in Vancouver.

Did I say anything about filming location, le Assburger?

You said Canadian TV. Unless you meant our actual tv devices. American TV = Canadian TV.

Please don't talk to me for awhile.

 Yeah.  Utica, NY.  Basically dead center of the state.

Going on a break again?
Getting ready to make IEDs against American Occupation Forces.

"But I didn't vote for him"; they cried.

Wolf Hall is very good, enjoying it a lot.

The first episodes of Game of Thrones season 4 however are boring me to tears. I think I'm going to give up on it, I probably should have a while ago.
And I'm still stuck at episode 3 of True Detective, I can't get into it. It looks good and the acting is fine, but crime stuff just doesn't interest me.

Keep watching it, as always, it gets better as the season goes.

I had the same problem, but it grew on me :)
I don't do meditation.  I drink alcohol to relax, like normal people.

Do, it's wonderful. Mark Rylance is extraordinary as Thomas Cromwell.

Banderas is the prettier one, the younger one, the poorer one.  He is the nurturing, mothering one.

How often is a sugar daddy a bottom?
As Marti says 50/50 probably. I'd never really thought of it, but in that film I wouldn't peg Banderas as the bottom - to the extent that's a permanent fixed category in a relationship which it rarely is.

Don't read your heteronormative and gendered sexual roles into gay relationships :P

QuoteI don't understand why a Canadian show would have to be Canada-free to sell internationally.
Yeah. See Top of the Lake, all Scandinavian and British drama, Spiral, Inspector Montalbano etc. Canadian shows may not be able to sell into the US, I think relatively few foreign shows manage it (though they mostly share a language so it's more plausible) but there's a big international market for other small countries selling shows to each other.

Hell Midsomer Murders is apparently huge in some parts of Eastern Europe

QuoteCritics can't determine a market if they are out of touch with consumers.  Maybe the problem is that Canadians as a whole have shitty taste.
But there is a market for those sort of shows - if they're good rather than just worthy - especially with Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Agreed. I expected Rylance to be brilliant (and he is) but Lewis is a bit of a revelation.
Let's bomb Russia!
