Critics can't determine a market if they are out of touch with consumers.  Maybe the problem is that Canadians as a whole have shitty taste.
given that as a whole they love the same shows as their US cousins, I fail to see the relevance here

Critics are critics.  They like stuff that nobody likes just to pretend they are better than the average viewer.  Disliking a tv series/movie because it's popular is just as dumb as liking it because there are only a thousand people accross the world would have heard of it.

What was that Canadian show with the hot sucubbus girl and the whole underworld of mythical characters? I used to watch that one, plenty of hot chicks.

EDIT: Lost Girl it was called.
last season (5) is not as good as the other ones imho.  But we'll see, still 8 episodes left, should come back any time now.

Canadians on the whole like the same stuff Americans like.

Not sure you got the point I was making ...

I thought I did.

Canadians like the same stuff that Americans do, plus some shitty Canadian shows, apparently.

If that were the case we would watch more Canadian content. :P

The other factor which has considerable impact is most of the talent in Canada goes South to work on US based productions, writers, producers, actors etc.  Also most of the local technical talent is used by US production companies who produce their product here.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

It seems *some* Canadian shows get aired.  Does no one watch them?

I was making a comment critical of the production of Canadian shows. How you got from that "Canadians like shitty shows" I do not understand.

It was an alternate theory to explain why Canada produces shitty shows.

The CBC aires them, that's our BBC public owned mothercorp. The private channels air American shows.

Something like the top 19 shows on Canadian TV are American.

One of my favorite guilty pleasure shows (I mentioned it in that recent thread we had) was a Canadian show.

Still very much enjoying 'Wolf Hall' and Damien Lewis's portrayal of Henry VIII is revealing itself perhaps brilliantly, I mean I think it'll be a brilliant performance once the full traits and motivations of his Henry are evident.

They get aired mostly because broadcasters here have to meet Canadian content rules.  There is some good stuff every now and then (Corner Gas, Little Mosque on the Prairie, Murdoch Mysteries come to mind) but generally speaking the audience is low.  We mainly watch the same shows viewed in the US.

Is Henry VII in it?

I quite enjoy Murdoch Mysteries, though I'm a fair amount behind the current run.  I gave Strange Empire 3 episodes, and thought it was mediocre at best.  I could see what they were vaguely trying for, but it just wasn't working.  Trailer Park Boys is quite popular with a lot of my friends, which I believe is Canadian.  I also loved Due South when it was on.  Where I grew up and live we get one Canadian station, CKWS out of Kingston, so I probably have an unusual amount of Canadian tv experience for an American.
