Oh it's meant to be a great film, though I've never seen it.

Edit:  I don't understand why it's a gay thing though

"The documentary has been adapted into a full-length musical"
So's the story of Colonel Gadafi and Maggie Thatcher, not to mention Jesus Christ.  Doesn't mean they're of especial interest to queens.
From what I read the documentary is considered the "classic of camp". I was actually hoping you, garbon or Habsburg (i.e. the arthouse fags) here would chime in and provide some insight into it.

My understanding was that it was a poignant film about the pretensions of old money when the money runs out

You should read Susan Sontag's 'Notes On Camp' if you're interested in it, it's very good.

I resent being put in the same bracket as Garbo and Habs <_<  We're all rather different.  Though all enjoyable and essential to the board's ecosystem in our own little ways.

Grey Gardens is a fantastic documentary, touching and quite funny at the same time.  I don't think it's a film of exclusively gay interest -- it's directed by the Maysles brothers, who also made Salesman (a great documentary about door-to-door Bible salesmen in the late 60s) and other documentaries -- but I do have a few gay (male) friends who went wild for it and even started trying to dress like Little Edie for a short period.   :D

I wouldn't say it's really camp per se, but just that the Beales are such unconventional and theatrical characters.

Sorry, but my sister had to explain to me what Gray Gardens was this week whilst I was in New York. I'd never heard of it.

Also, Sheilbh, what are you talking about? I'd certainly think Thatcher and Jesus would be of interest to queens.  My first musical was Joseph and his amazing rainbow coat. :)

I heard it mentioned several times lately and it feels like my homo education is lacking for not knowing it.

What is it?

I knew you weren't gay I just knew it.  :p

It seems my lack of knowledge of Grey Gardens is on par with Sheilbh's and garbon's. :P

Well all of you need to step it up then. :p

Actually unless you are a real film buff/scholar likely until a few years ago it's unlikely you would have heard of it. very much a cultish thing until it's recent (a few years ago now) Criterion release, and subsequent art-house runs (only allowed after Jackie O's death.)  and the B-Way show... It now has become a bigger cult thing.

If you like it... check out other Maysles Bros stuff like Salesman or Gimme Shelter. Equally awesome docs.
:p

Those Feast of Fools forums are really rounding out your education.  I can understand why you don't post there though.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

HBO has made a film with Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange premiering this month.

I'm surprised by that.  I would think that the other gays would mock you pretty ruthlessly, given your provincialism and their own lack of maturity, and you'd be ashamed.

Then again, you're not ashamed about the whole 'lawyer' thing, so I guess I shouldn't be as surprised as I am.

I'd assumed that's why Marty heard a lot about it recently.

This is correct.
