Susan Boyle is a sort of frumpy looking English woman who won the English amateur-star-search TV program... last year?
Scottish.  She'd headbutt you if she'd heard that :P

Just saw this thread. Glad to see my main man Sean took care of clearing this mess up for us.

She's a Scot :)

Who is Susan Boyle and why does she need an answer?
Sometimes I think you live in a hole in the ground.
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

Are your students all familiar with Susan Boyle?

They don't live inside the Anglo-American cultural sphere. It's not an applicable comparison.

I don't watch much TV.

EDIT: Anyways, this is just one of many instances of Yi exclaiming bafflement over a pop cultural or sports references that came into prominence after the 1990s.

Heck, even someone who does watch lots of tv might miss her if they didn't watch light news programs or pay attention to promos for a few weeks last spring.

When people see me they invariably expect an amazing performance. I consistently disappoint though. :(

That's the problem. I'd be happy to know nothing about her, but you can't tune out all the goddamn promos... :(

I don't do meditation.  I drink alcohol to relax, like normal people.

Well, I imagine it's easier when it's just promos for news shows because none of the channels you watch are showing Britain's Got Talent. ;)
