my major inspirations for gnomes are the munchkins from the 50's OZ cartoons. however, they are not turnip shaped, and look like smaller big nosed dwarfs. they have weird senses of humour.  they like making inventions that do not work so well (high int, low wisdom) ... stuff like paddlewheel warships. they have a thing for breeding giant versions of burrowing animals ... so porcupines, rabbits, badgers especially.

redcaps are an evil clan of gnomes who specialise in boulder traps. fiendish laughter always follows.

Tolkien originally called what would become elves in his mythos gnomes.  That being said, I've always leaned toward humans in fantasy settings, as long as they're from the decaying and weakened kingdom, a la Gondor and Solamnia.  Elves as they are in the Silmarillion are pretty sweet, but the later variety are simply too withdrawn and inactive for my tastes.  Dwarves, therefore, take the win over elves in the general fantasy setting.
"Everything that brought you here -- all the things that made you a prisoner of past sins -- they are gone. Forever and for good. So let the past go... and live."

"Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did."

It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

The Silmarillion elves were awesome. Bloodthirsty, fratricidal, crazy SOBs. Much better than the modern frilly, fancy-pants holier-than-thous of modern fantasy.

Gnomes as RPG characters do indeed suck, but I was always a fan of "The Secret Book of Gnomes" by Wil Huygen.

Since when is their identity "magic apt tricksters"?  I won't doubt that somewhere they're described as such, but they don't have the same image in popular fantasy that elves or dwarves have.

Garl Glittergold their god is the god of trickery, their natural tendency to be Illusionists.  I mean even Gnomes that are not Illusionists usually are sneaky little devils.  They are tricksters, practical jokers, they use wit and intelligence to win rather than magic or brawn.  Also they are known for being eccentric and perhaps a bit insane.  Well at least that is how they were in D&D since day 1.  Even in Dragonlance and Everquest they are known for their spectacular intelligence and eccentricity of course.

The reason they lack the image is they are not from Tolkien which is sort of a kiss of death I suppose.

:weep:

Naturally they were my favorite race.

I loved Tiax and Quayle and Jan from the Baldur's Gate series.  All embracing the usual Gnome archtypes.

Quayle: Oh noooo (on dying)

Tiax: Ha ha!  Smart guy dies and Tiax goes on to RULE ALL!!

:bleeding:  Everything in Unearthed Arcana was awful (except the extensive pole arm section.)  All the new classes and races were severely over powered.

Were they introduced in Unearthed Arcana?  I wasn't aware of that.

No wonder they were so powerful!

I've never heard him be called a gnome.

He is the Ur-example of a gnome.  When he appeared in King's Quest I it was as a gnome.
