The Minsky Moment

Philadelphia does have a lot of soul . . .
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

Honestly nothing particularly current that's directly on that stuff most relevant recent-ish books that have changed how I think things through and does shape it are probably still Adam Tooze's Crashed and Helen Thompson's Disorder. Plus - specifically on democracy and specifically in a Euro-context, Ruling the Void by Peter Mair.

Aside from that when it comes to non-fiction like everyone here I suspect I read a lot of history  Also I'm afraid I'm your nemesis, because I'm the type of sicko who reads and enjoys continental theory, much of it Marxist - so Foucalt, Lyotard, Lukacs, Jameson...I have even dabbled in Derrida

If the Democrats do anything to pass a budget they are stupid. They should let the Republicans self destroy over their inability to pass a budget.

I think it depends on the spin that sticks. I fear it will be that the Dems refused to play ball as though it is required of them to acquiesce to Republican plans.

I'd argue that the Democrats' greatest weakness is inability to spin their proposals so that the voter can see how their proposals help the voter and the country.

I agree with you that was their greatest weakness.  But with the constitutional order collapsing around them that is not now the primary concern.

I think showing right wing incompetence is a better way to win voters (or make the other side lose voters) than trying to show the merits of complex policy proposals.

You have to do both, but you have to package the complex policy proposals in something voters understand. Like Hope and Change or whatever.

Though, you know, you have to do them and ensure they have very quick positive results. And make sure everybody knows those positive results.

I really don't think the problem is spin.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

How's that working out for the Democrats?

Indeed. Also feels like better to show why you should be in charge than only why the other side shouldn't.

It's cute that you still think American elections are one and lost based on who is competent
