So apparently Canadian Catholic bishops have issued a warning to their parrishioners for them to avoid the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, claiming that they're made with stem cells obtained from abortions.
This is North American culture wars - US and Canadian bishops are dividing on this.

The Vatican's adopted a different and more nuanced position but it's not hard line enough for some North American bishops  <_<

Certainly ties in with the discussion we were having in the other thread about North American Christian fundamentalism.

QuoteNovavax's vaccine was 100% effective at preventing severe Covid-19 and had a 96.4% efficacy rate against the original strain of the virus, even higher than the BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna shots, according to analysis of its trial

Also apparently there were trials in the UK and it is similarly effective against the new UK variant/B117 :w00t:

But only 55% effective in preventing the South African variant (although still effective at preventing serious outcomes).

This is the vaccine that's been licensed to produce in Canada... whenever the government new manufacturing facility if built and certified. <_<

That's great news. How good are the other vaccines at preventing shitty outcomes for variants?

I think they're all very successful at preventing hospitalisation and death across all strains. The main issue is their effectiveness at stopping mild infections.

It seems weird to consider a hard line stance on use of vaccines developed from certain stem cell lines to be christian fundamentalism. You really need to strain to get to that point of view from biblical literalism.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

There's a fine line between salvation and drinking poison in the jungle.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

The Bishops are also spinning it that it's encouraging vaccination & were misinterpreted.

In Quebec, you don't get to pick your vaccine. So, good luck to the crazy catholics who care.

Nah.  My Ukrainian-Canadian didn't grow up with much religion, so when we went to Church it was with my mom to a United Church.

My wife and I kind of... stopped going to Church when it conflicted with hockey so much  :Embarrass: but we were going to an Alliance Church.
