If this vaccine thing works out we really owe it to scientists to listen to what they say.

Quote
In South Dakota, the Republican Governor Kristi Noem said of the recent Thanksgiving holiday: "We won't stop or discourage you from thanking God and spending time together this Thanksgiving."

Quote
Top US infectious diseases expert Dr Anthony Fauci says the US is experiencing its worst coronavirus spread since the pandemic began, highlighting outbreaks in the Dakotas.
"We have it in our power to begin the world over again"

I would argue that a look at how the world has changed since, say 1750, would be enough to make anyone listen to scientists.  :(

While I'm sure that in the specific case of Kristi Noem it won't be hard to dig up ignorant and stupid statements, the comment "we won't stop or discourage you from thanking God and spending time together this Thanksgiving" is not inconsistent with "listening to the scientists".
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

There's a fine line between salvation and drinking poison in the jungle.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

Yes but scientific facts can be REALLY inconveniencing at times!

Yeah, I'd have thought so, but here we are.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Ireland had a stricter lockdown and shut down non-essential retail (like Wales). But the shops opened again this morning. This was a queue outside the Irish version of Primark in Dublin at 4.30 am

I like shopping as much as the next man but I mean, wut?

same in Gent. Also for the Primark

It begins. Pfizer/BionTech approved in the UK - roll out starts next week. I think the priority list is care home residents, healthcare and care home workers, the elderly and the clinically extremely vulnerable.

Edit: It's really weird waking up to good news. Been a while.

Are you looking forward growing an extra set of arms?

If it gets me a holiday somewhere sunny and a pint in a pub - thrilled  :P

For all the things we did wrong in covid, creating basically the first vaccine we have had to protect against a coronavirus in 9 months time is a major achievement.

I agree.  This is one of those "big science" projects.  Like the Manhattan project or the space race.

And a model we should be looking at for climate - just blank cheques for research and making the energy transition we need to. Only the state has the money to do it and to take on that risk.

It's extraordinary. From knowing nothing to the genome sequencing to vaccine in such a space of time is incredible.

Edit: Fuck - just realised it's only a matter of time before I have to wear a suit again :weep: :bleeding:

Edit: Apparently this is the order people will be getting vaccinated. My dad's in round 3 so hopefully he'll get it soon :w00t:
