Interesting poll:

I've seen lots of people in London talking about this - especially about the growth in people cycling and the desire to make that permanent. We're pretty good at parks, but I hope we take this opportunity to actually re-think how we actually live in our cities and make them more live-able.

Edit: Also - really interesting genetic analysis of covid in the UK:

They identified 1,300 independent lineages. What's really striking is that large numbers occurred before community transmission was identified in those countries (I think about Feb 23 for Italy and Feb 29 for Spain) and they peaked about a month before the peak in the UK, and basically at the point the government advised social distancing (a week before formal lockdown).

Here in Spain one of the main changes from the lockdown is the massive reduction of urban car traffic (to be expected with so many people working remotely these days), and the need for more space to properly distancing has made some bar terraces to encroach on part of the pavements. Calls for making more streets in city centers pedestrian only have followed, and I could see it becoming more common in the near future.

So maybe that hot weather kills it theory is a bust.

Really sucks, if so.  Was hoping it would give us a little bit of a break.

I'd like change but ugh, I don't want to put up with more cyclists. Not unless there are going to be enforced regulations like there are for cars.

Yeah. The laws on them need enforcing especially because I think a group of very aggressive rule-breaking cyclists actually put off other people from cycling. Basically men of a certain age who work in the city need to be taught that it's a mode of transport, not a way of working out their anger issues.

Separately initial numbers of contact tracing are good, but I am concerned that the person in charge (former CEO of TalkTalk - who had to resign after a fuck up around a data breach) is saying utterly incomprehensible things like this: "I have repeatedly said this is the cherry on the cake. not the cake itself. And what you're seeing today is the baking of the cake is going reasonably well."  :hmm:

I am thinking their hope is that everyone just basically forgets about contract tracing as life returns to normal, and people won't bother to inquire as long as hospitals remain operational.

Nah, if the unwritten rule is that cyclists reign supreme everything will sort itself out

Just yesterday 5 cyclists sorted things out for themselves in front of my car on the road, leisurely strolling ahead on their bikes chatting, blocking the entire width of the lane, forcing traffic behind them to crawl after them.

How long did that happen?

Well as soon as I could leave a safe distance between them muppets and my car I overtook them, so it didn't take long. But the arrogance of it was still blood-boiling.

You guys have a long way to go.

Wait until cyclist virtue-signaling clogs public transportation as well.

It also depends a lot on how a city is structured.

It takes me 25 minutes to get to the plant on my car, 90 minutes on the bus. It would take a couple hours going against the wind to do so on a bike (if I don't suffer a stroke on the way).

In fairness that may be because they've wildly reduced the number of people allowed on-site and you have to pre-book specific times.
