I have heard that Cuba pre-Castro had better doctor-per-capita numbers etc than neighboring countries, anyone know a good source about this stuff?

I know a number of Africans who have a pretty high opinion of Castro. From their pov Castro was instrumental in helping various African countries gain independence in the face of colonialism.

Wold Europe have held on otherwise?

IKK-land was pretty tenacious.

This is puzzling.  Castro sent troops to Zaire to fight other Africans, not colonial overlords.

Well, yes but the major Cuban intervention in Angola was after the independence, Pedro Rodriguez Peralta in Bissau-Guinea notwithstanding, so colour me skeptical.

I know little about Bizarro-Guinea, but sure, withdrawn.

I think - because this wasn't an in depth conversation - that it was not just about military intervention but also actions like sending doctors and nurses to Africa. But standing against Apartheid before that was fashionable in the West probably scores the man a few points from an African POV.

A couple of brief articles on the African perspective:

Well Africa hasn't always looked for leadership in the right places.

blah blah blah pinko commie nonsense that Languish doesn't agree with blah blah blah

There's a distinct difference between liberal internationalism and socialist/proletarian internationalism;  and, as one is acknowledged as legitimate and the other is not, the results of Cuban internationalism really means that it never really existed in the first place.

Who knew that Seeds had a hard-on for Castro?

Honecker sent troops to Angola.  Do Africans think he's a great guy as well?
