Bleh. Yeah. This is what I get for posting when waking up randomly at night.

So apparently Trump is proposing 50-year mortgage terms as a way to address housing unaffordability?

That is a terrible deal. Better to rent than take a 50 year mortgage. Especially in an era where there is little job security.

So generational debt to fund the generational wealth of the lenders.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

A 50 year mortgage will both increase housing prices and interest rates as far as I can see.

Not the greatest way to end it, but a failed ending was likely inevitable. Hard to win a game of chicken with an opponent that wants to crash.

Ultimately it was a game of political damage...which side will be blamed the most.  I think the Democrats "won" that balance...aside from MAGA true believers, it will be nearly impossible for the GOP to say they're not responsible for medical premiums going up (even if the Dems didn't win their concession), and Trump's handling of trying to strangle SNAP benefits mean the GOP is going to own that as well.

The worst way for the Democrats to play this will be to wallow in "we lost/we conceded" messaging (Angus King needs to retire).

Force the Republicans to tank the filibuster or make them cave. Either way was a win. They decided to lose instead.

So typical. We did well in an election, the Republicans were tanking in the polls, we were fighting for something most people supported and then we just shoot ourselves in the head and let them off the hook.

Again.

Ah well. Hope will drive a man crazy.

Schumer and all eight senators who voted with the GOP on this should be primaried.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

And if they don't do either of those, what should the plan be?

Nothing. Either the Republicans negotiate to end the shutdown or they own the mess.

Then the shutdown continues and the Republicans continue to lose. The fact that the Republicans were blatantly lying about the Democrats' position because they could not justify the Republican position, and everyone could see the lie, meant that this was a losing issue for Republicans.

The short-term harm to the country was necessary to avoid the long-term harm we will now see.

Well put.

Toni has a point, breaking the state isn't exactly a problem for the Republicans' true agenda, but it's not like a docile opposition is a harm either. It feels like it would have been better to hold their ground and showcase just how far the Republicans go. It's a bit of a fast forward of the damage they will do, yes, but the longer normalcy's pretense is maintained (by Democratic help) the harder it will be to recover when everything inevitably collapses.

Next step is bringing back indentured servitude.
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

I believe none of the 8 who are running are up for election in 2026.  Not a coincidence.
