The Roman Empire wasn't gone in 476 in Italy. It was back in 535 and would hang around until 1071 :byzanteen:

allright, allright, "Western Roman Empire", then :P

Didn't the Western Roman Senate got abolished before 535?  or close to that?

It's last reported public act was in 603. Nobody really knows why it stopped meeting after that date I don't think.

Slightly hyperbolic.  :P  I don't understand the fascination with a doomed Empire that for the last few centuries mostly coasted on their previous status as major power. Kind of like 19th century Austria-Hungary.  :P

:o Why are you now dragging Austria-Hungary?! :o

I broadly agree but I love, love, love the cultural output and impact of late Austria-Hungary/the collaps of Austria-Hungary - Musil, Roth, psycho-analysis, Wiener Moderne etc. Plus I love Central and Eastern Europe for holidays and there is still a sort of Austro-Hungarian cultural space I particularly like.

I have been reading Peter Heath's The Restoration of Rome, sort of a sequel to his Fall of the Roman Empire.

In it, he labels Byzantium as a de facto successor state of the Roman Empire following the Islamic conquests, which he says broke the back of whatever was left of the Empire at the time.

Maybe doomed, late stage empires have great cultural output? :P

If you want a good assessment of the mood at the end of the A-H empire  check Joseph Roth's Radetzkymarsch. The book has been filmed twice, I recommend the black and white version.

Vor a look at Wilhelmine Gernany, check Heinrich Mann's Der Untertan. ;)

More like if all the states west of the Mississippi broke off and claimed that they were America.

The Byzantine Empire included the richest and most densely-populated parts of the old Roman Empire.

No its like if all the states west of the Mississippi broke off and claimed that they were America, then Mexico came and conquered everything south of Wyoming, but the remaining part still claimed to be America.

And then China conquered the rest and proclaimed themselves to be the new Buddhist America. And Australia declared themselves the Third America without ever owning any of the original.
