I don't think I've ever heard or read anyone say America *has* to be different.  Rather I've heard plenty of people question why we have to be the same.

American Exceptionalism. It exists.

I just skimmed the first part, which is talking about the belief that America is different because of unique origin, institutions, etc.  That doesn't refute my point.  After all, other countries could imitate all that and be like us.

Seems to overdue it a bit. After all, there are certainly logistical hurdles that require more coordination when dealing with a nation of 3.7 million sq mi and 319 million people vs say 194k sq mi and 46 million (Spain).

Sure. But then, the argument has to be about logistics, feasibility, population density, political choices, political centralization, etc. Yet the geographical size of America is frequently invoked as a way to shut down any argument that proposes foreign models, ideas, etc - despite any attempt at examining whether or not size would, indeed, have an impact upon the actual issue.

People would come to the US to be an American.  People don't go to Spain to become Spanish, or Peru to become Peruvian, or Japan to become Japanese.  But to be an American, that's different.

It is kind of stupid anyway since we do things mostly at a state level for a reason.

so, oex, if you concede the argument has merit, then why did you choose this moment to rant about how we all think too highly of the US?

I don't know. The same reason you decide to post moronic defenses of Trump?
