So what's that I read about wanting to remove federal funding from sanctuar cities that don't cooperate with federal immigration officers?

I don't understand what funding they need. It costs money to not arrest illegal immigrants?

I think he's saying remove federal funding from the cities entirely

 federal funding goes pretty much everywhere. san francisco, for example, receives $1 billion (edit - sources seem to vary between 500 million and 1 billion) in federal funding

Previously when I've read about this idea it has been connected to federal funding for local police forces.

What, you think they go straight from the orchard to the nearest Federal Pound You In The Ass Prison when they get locked up?  No, they sit for months and sometimes years waiting out the deportation process at local county and city detention centers.

The reason I ask is because the size of our population is going to be a factor when determining how best to do something like this. And if these are to be given out for free... (otherwise, they can't be the only possible way to be allowed to vote)... that's quite a cost.
Why does size of population matter?  Everything is bigger in a bigger country, including the budget and the bureaucratic apparatus.

Arguments about size seems to have been a way to reclaim American exceptionalism albeit in a less messianic/promised land rhetoric: America has to be different (and therefore, cannot take its inspiration) from other countries, because it's bigger than anywhere else.

Seems to overdue it a bit. After all, there are certainly logistical hurdles that require more coordination when dealing with a nation of 3.7 million sq mi and 319 million people vs say 194k sq mi and 46 million (Spain).

I don't think I've ever heard or read anyone say America *has* to be different.  Rather I've heard plenty of people question why we have to be the same.

Huh? We are not bigger than anywhere else by any possible measure.

Anyway I don't think it is exceptionalism that causes us to not have national ID cards. It is just the idiosyncrasies of our system.
