Selling it means rationalizing the mineral and grazing rights leases.  That will not happen.

Why not?  Do those people extracting rents have enough of a stranglehold on Intermountain politics to veto it?

In Wyoming at least, yep.  That's two senators and a crazy representative assured of making sure the sweet deals don't stop - I would assume several other western states follow along.  Nobody wants to own all that land, that means taxes, but having outdated leasing laws means all sorts of possible loopholes to skip through.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

I can understand that.  Corruption is generally at the heart of arguments about "federal land is the peoples' birthright."

Keep it federal. Fuck the commercial value in destroying it.

Eh.  Some of us are not so socialist as others.  Private property isn't "destroyed" property, no matter what your Little Red Book says.

Yeah, 11B, who the fuck do you think you are?  Americanistic freedomtude and libertyism specifically grants us the God-given rights to allow corporations to deforest, overdevelop and pollute it all.

Yeah, 11B!   We all know that the dazzling bureaucrats are far better custodians of the land than mere owners of it!  Hell, our houses would be so much better if the government repossessed all of them and made them as good as the rest of the public housing.  Hell, crooks would probably be able to make sweetheart deals (like keeping the royalty rate at its 1920 levels) if the incorruptible US federal bureaucracy and Congress weren't the custodians of the land.

Yes, because the only alternatives are living in caves and paving everything, amiright?  Fuck.
