And I watched the final scene right before writing my post and stand by my own assessment. And "alpha male" is an absolutely empty and baseless term.

I think we've reached peak woke here.

How is that "woke"?

Maybe I only have a weak grasp on what woke means but I thought it had something to do with the oppression of minorities or something. What does that have to do with Beria?

And the original research it comes from (on behaviour of wolf packs) was discredited by its own authors after further research and the misunderstandings it was causing but the terms continue to be used as if they meant anything.

The terms mean what they are understood to mean.  The term "alpha males" refers to personalities that try to dominate interactions with others.  Who gives a shit whether originally it came from a misunderstanding, the actual humans who behave like that exist, and this phrase is a succinct way to describe such personalities. 

It requires a tremendous willingness to not understand the intent of communication to find the use of this phrase either cringey or not meaning anything.  Seriously, this nonsense has gone far enough, you can't even tell what time it is without wondering whether a certain way to tell time is now considered "cringey".  I truly regret attempting to discuss anything now, this place can be really disgusting sometimes, and now is one of those times.

I don't think the terms itself is cringey, but it is cringey as applied to Beria, a notorious and brutal rapist of young girls among many other crimes.

I loved how Ianucci used accents in the movie.

Ianucci is a genius - strongly recommend his adaptation of David Copperfield with Dev Patel. It's very good.

One thing I wish they did differently was Beria's downfall.  The way it actually happened would've been more impactful than how they portrayed it in the movie.  In real life the rest of the gang coldly dispatched him, and Beria went to his execution a broken pleading mess of a man.  That would've been a good demonstration of how anyone's fortunes can suddenly and comprehensively change in that kind of a regime.  In the movie Beria still looks like an alpha male even as he's executed.

You know this entire exchange caused me to watch Death of Stalin on Netflix tonight.  Which was a well spent night - I love this movie.

I really don't think Beria came across as an "alpha".  Yes he was threatening people to the end - but it was clear he had no power to do anything about it.  Came across as more pathetic than anything.
