Caligula was actually competent during his first years of rule. I doubt that Trump has ever been competent when managing anything besides his own exposure.

King John?

Best known as an untrustworthy bastard; nobles forced him to accept a proto-constitution at sword-point.

Not a bad comparison, though I suspect John had far more in the way of brains and gumption than Trump.

It is really hard to think of a good comparison, because it is pretty unusual for a ruler to combine Trump's ego, lying, contempt for allies, favor for enemies, and massive incompetence in one package.

Fernando the VIIth of Spain (the one overthrown by Napoleon and restored afterwards) might be a good comparison, he's widely considered to be by far the worst Spanish ruler of all time, even after Carlos the 2nd, and that's saying something.

QuoteHis reputation among historians is very low. Historian Stanley Payne says:

He proved in many ways the basest king in Spanish history. Cowardly, selfish, grasping, suspicious, and vengeful, [he] seemed almost incapable of any perception of the commonwealth. He thought only in terms of his power and security and was unmoved by the enormous sacrifices of Spanish people to retain their independence and preserve his throne

Good one. Inherits his position. Totally self-absorbed. People see in him what they hope and prefer, rather than what he is.

Yeah, that's a pretty good choice actually!

Valmy

In Mike Duncan's series on the Venezuelan Revolution he had a quip how Simon Bolivar was the only one in Venezuela not pining for Ferdinand "The Desired One" because, unlike everybody else, he had actually met Ferdinand.
Quote"This is a Russian warship. I propose you lay down arms and surrender to avoid bloodshed & unnecessary victims. Otherwise, you'll be bombed."

Zmiinyi defenders: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

The Brain

You have to remember that Trump probably isn't fully sentient.

Which historical figure would you say Trump most closely resembles in behaviour?

I suggest Henry VIII of England.

Kaiser Wilhelm II.  Insecure, melodramatic, ignorant, and impulsive.  Both Trump and the Kaiser had a remarkable ability to say exactly the wrong thing.

It's not difficult to imagine Trump saying something very similar to what the Kaiser said to his soldiers who were off to put down the Boxer rebellion in China

"Should you encounter the enemy, he will be defeated! No quarter will be given! Prisoners will not be taken! Whoever falls into your hands is forfeited. Just as a thousand years ago the Huns under their King Attila made a name for themselves, one that even today makes them seem mighty in history and legend, may the name German be affirmed by you in such a way in China that no Chinese will ever again dare to look cross-eyed at a German"

Wilhelm wasn't stupid, and neither is Trump, but he was far too unstable to be a leader.
Are you sure about that?

Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
