What does a TRUMP presidency look like?

I'd argue that Henry VIII was politically much more savvy, not to mention much more cultured, even if the stories of his temperamental egotism have now dominated the portrayal of his reign. Politics were also quite different then - so norms of behavior of the 16th century make it harder to have a meaningful comparison.

I am having a hard time finding someone as mediocre. The bunch of egotistical, temperamental people I can think of, were generally more accomplished (even if vile). Trump's genius has been to embody the 80s - in brand power, and media presence. Berlusconi at least had the capacity to navigate, and thrive within the treacherous Italian political system.

The Minsky Moment

Henry VIII wrote theological treatises.  Granted he likely had help but still we aren't talking "Art of the Deal" here.
The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.

Which historical figure would you say Trump most closely resembles in behaviour?

I suggest Henry VIII of England.

Kaiser Wilhelm II.  Insecure, melodramatic, ignorant, and impulsive.  Both Trump and the Kaiser had a remarkable ability to say exactly the wrong thing.

It's not difficult to imagine Trump saying something very similar to what the Kaiser said to his soldiers who were off to put down the Boxer rebellion in China

"Should you encounter the enemy, he will be defeated! No quarter will be given! Prisoners will not be taken! Whoever falls into your hands is forfeited. Just as a thousand years ago the Huns under their King Attila made a name for themselves, one that even today makes them seem mighty in history and legend, may the name German be affirmed by you in such a way in China that no Chinese will ever again dare to look cross-eyed at a German"

Wilhelm wasn't stupid, and neither is Trump, but he was far too unstable to be a leader.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Trump is a caricature of a caricature of himself.  It is too late to dig deep enough to find a there there, all we have is the layers of deceit and illness.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

That's a good way of putting it.

America has a sick president.

Yeah, it's not too hard to find lots of historical figures who might have had near-Trump levels of ego, and some of them were pretty bombastic, but they were all smarter, more cultured, and more competent.

Not a bad comparison, but Mussolini was a lot more competent than Trump.  He was one of the people I had in mind in my prior post.
