I had a conversation with a co-worker today regarding Good Friday as a holiday. He thought that it was a given that companies give that day off work. It got me thinking about it. Growing up in Iowa and then moving to Illinois, Good Friday has never been a state holiday, so I never thought about it being a Federal one. My co-worker has only ever had jobs in Indiana - where it is a state holiday - and in Illinois at very small companies owned by very religious individuals.

So who gets this Friday off work? And how does it work for Eastern Orthodox people with their different Easter calendar?

He wasn't there again today

State Holiday.

BUT you can work and get comp time which you can then use to take your other Easter day off.

How long has it been a state holiday there?

I get extra vacations days and Sunday pay for working on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and 2nd Easter Day (Monday).

Electoral campaigns do not suffer Holidays, so I am working this Good Friday but from home, which mitigates it.

Uh...no idea. The current slate of Holidays has been in existence since 1993 so that is the law the gets referred to. Cesar Chavez Day next week is also a State Holiday. Wahoo!

Good Friday is a statutory holiday, so I get it off.

Easter Monday is also a holiday for provincial employees.

That's right - 4 day weekend coming up for me.
Posts here are my own private opinions.  I do not speak for my employer.

"Maundy Thursday"?? "2nd Easter Day"??

What are those?? And what are the religious significance to those?

Nope, because I'm self employed. It is an official holiday all over Spain otherwise. Depending on the region also thursday or monday. In my region it's today and on monday there's a local one, so people here can have a 5 day holiday these days.

Off Friday and Monday as bank holidays.

*shakes fist*

In theory, Friday is a holiday here.

But you know what lawyers in private practice say about weekends: "only two (in this case, three) more billable days until Monday!".  :D

We have it off this year; we haven't in the past.  (We used to have MLK Jr. day off; but didn't this year.)

The Thursday is the day Jebus washed his disciples' feet, I don't know what Maudy means but we call it "Skærtorsdag" and it means Clean Thursday. And Easter Monday is him meeting his disciples.
